People use the quote feature too often on forums

I never understand why people quote the OP. It's completely pointless. Unless you're quoting someone else, what your writing is responding to the OP anyway. Seems attention seeking.

I understand why somebody would use it when they are referring to an older post, but I see so many people quoting the post immediately before theirs, because obviously the average person doesn't know how to look up.

other things that annoy me are quotes within quotes, and people who don't remove pictures and videos from quotes, and people who quote a wall of text and refer to a specific sentence without pointing out which sentence they are referring to! seriously! snip your quotes!!!

I'm all for being clear about who you're replying to, but why not use an "@User" format rather than filling the page with things that have already been posted.

Just seeing whether I am alone in being anhappens noyed by this = \
The reason most quote is to get the attention of the person quoted, myself included. It's rarely about the people reading the thread and more about keeping a discussion going. I love that, since most don't return to a thread and it promotes discussion. I would be long gone without the quote feature. The snip part is actually technically breaking the rules, but only if it happens repeatedly and to an extreme, and it's hard to enforce. Some of the posts in this thread are punishable, but I'll be nice given the circumstance.

I agree that people should use snipping appropriately, sometimes quotes get huge due to the layout and design of the thread posts. It's a trade-off for having nice clean easy to read and understand forums. Quotes are important though when threads get too long to manage so one can understand what has been said previously and what convos are going on at the time.

I agree that yes anyone who is going to post will (or should) have read the first page, but i once spent a whole hour reading through several pages of a thread (i was bored i know) so i could gather what was said previously and i still had some idiot bark at me for not reading the whole thread before i posted. Apparently he had said something similar a few pages back, but i didn't notice it was part of the conversation because he didn't quote anyone who was in said conversation. Had he been quoting the conversation i would have known.

Doesn't really bother me at all.
In fact, I kinda like getting quoted.
It means people have actually read the stuff I posted, and that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and happy.

Ohai :)

I like being quoted. If I was never quoted I'd never read a reply to any of my posts, ever. This forum is way too active for me to keep finding threads i've posted in and see if anyone has specifically replied to me. But being quoted and recieving a little PM is perfect.

Despite I do it sometimes, it bothers me when people "snip" a post their quoting. Yes it saves space but it removes any context for those who didn't read the post that's being quoted.

I don't think it's done too often, if there was a "too often" for quoting then I'm sure it'd have some kind of cool-down like a really powerful attack in a game.
The snip works better if you use a spoiler tag like I've done here. That way people can still read the comment :p

OT:
Well The Escapist doesn't have a thumbs up/down feature so quoting is the only way we can express approval. Besides, it helps get a conversation going on the forums

Earlier this month, I was lurking after watching a Zero punctuation video and figured I might as well make an account.

The quote feature has a massive advantage over the '@' style, namely that it sends a PM directly to the quoted person alerting them that someone is talking specifically to them, whereas the '@' style doesn't. That alone is worth the hassle for me. Not that I see quotes as a hassle. If you do, then you're more than welcome to not use them yourself, but the fact remains (whether you like it or not) that it's useful, convenient, and most people are completely unbothered by it whatsoever.

How about like this then?

if your post had already been swept away by other posts I would include the specific sentences I was referring to, but since you are less than 3 posts up, it seems to me that it would be redundant to include your entire post (especially without removing the quote of myself).

doing it this way just seems a lot cleaner to me.

Fair enough, I can't argue with that. The issue I have is merely that you seem to be dismissive of quotes entirely, rather than simply snipping the text. I tend to snip only when there's a massive conversation going on, or when a post is particularly long. Short and sweet ones, like your post that I'm now quoting, I'll keep intact so that others who are interested in our forum discussion can read it without any hassle or needless clicking of names to see earlier posts...

Now, back in the day, we didn't even get PM notifications for when we were quoted!
And we still used the quote function.

Personally, I find the reason to stick with this method is because the whole point of the forums is to discuss. And when you have all the posts places before you chronologically, careful thought is encouraged. There is no excuse to not read your interlocutors' posts over.

I like it when people quote posts, it makes things so much easier. If people just said something like '@TheLaofKazi', I probably wouldn't see it because I wouldn't get the notification. I'll read and post in a thread for a little bit, and then leave. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I just dump my thoughts in thread after thread and ignore everyone else, I read what people say, and sometimes I even come back and read more, but it's still pretty easy to miss someone replying to what you said.

I saw we were turning this thread into quote madness and wanted to be part of it. Oh yeah, I'm a bad guy. Chicks dig that I hear.

OT though: No, I don't see the point. I mean I can see where you're going but I personally like to be able to see who a certain person has been talking to. It makes stalking eas-... uhm... <.<
Sure, big pictures should get spoilered in quotes because they are mostly just annoying but hey, I can live with that just fine.

It's spoiler and /spoiler in brackets
So then what's the problem with quotes if you can just hide the rambling behind spoilers.

Because nobody does put the rambling behind spoilers.

Well OK, quite a few do, but you'll still come across those who can't be fucked and screw up the chat for everybody.

Ironically, every time you've replied to someone, you've done what makes you mad and quoted them. You gotta admit, it's a lot better than just going "@geK0" before your post. I do agree that you should snip your posts so that they aren't quotes within quotes within quotes making a huge massive wall of quotes, and you should snip out anything that is irrelevant to what you are replying to (I removed Trivun's snipped quote for instance, when I quoted you), but quotes are kind of necessary, and it really helps a discussion if I leave a section of your post in that I'm referring to, even if it's the OP. I think you can turn notifications for quotes off if it really bothers you, and if you don't want the notifications off, then I guess you really have nothing to complain about.

I like being notified when I get quoted. I like to know that someone is trying to tell me something, or maybe point something out about what I said. I think the forums would have a lot less conversation and traffic if it didnt have the quote system. I understand that you sort of want people to use it moderately, but I'm not bothered by the whole 2nd and 3rd page being almost entirely quotes. Quotes promote conversation between users and make the site more personable in my opinion. Instead of just aimless posts on a forum, I feel like I'm actually conversing with someone if we quote eachother and keep a conversation up.

You misunderstood, I mean "no quotes ever" I meant "quotes only when necessary, and keep them short."

In most forums I use the @User format, but I use a blank quote (except when the post I'm quoting is already buried) on these forums because of the notification feature.

It's not being quoted that bothers me, I like getting the auto-memo; the thing that bothers me is the clutter created on a thread by excessive quoting. I mean, if I hadn't of snipped this quote, it would just feel redundant, because your post is directly above mine anyway.

The quotes in my second post were supposed to be ironic (lol ^_^)

Actually this is true, I am part of a very small forum, we used to be a huuuuuge forum, smaller than the escapist but very large. Stuff happened and eventually the users just left and now there's maybe a max of 10 users, there's probably about 5 of us that are still pretty active, and since it's a smaller environment, we use the @User format as well. That being said, I think the Escapist is just too big for that to be handy, at least when thread sometimes go for 7 pages and such.
