...I simply put it under a bush. It's the least likeliest place to offend anyone and it will just degrade back into the mud. Simple. Anyone messing around under a bush without looking probably deserves what they get.

Leaving it on a pavement or a stretch of public grass commonly used by people, though? Yes. That is negligent. And irritates me, I always being a bag with my dog if there is nowhere sound for me to deposit it.

If a dog is shitting out RUNNY stuff (scuse me while I scrub my brain of that image) then nothing short of having a portable POOP-VACUM will clean it up. Shit happens, deal with it.

Having lived in Eastern Europe for a couple of years where absolutely no one cleans up after their dogs, seeing the sidewalks loaded with shit after the snow melts....curb your god damn dog.

I remember when our neighbors used to walk their dogs around and we'd find these huge lumps of shit on our lawn, when we confronted them they pretended to be outraged that we would accuse them of doing such a thing. Then we had to spray our lawn with poison ivy killer because I'm really allergic to it and it kept coming back. 3 days after we sprayed it one of the neighbors comes up to our house with a vet bill, saying two of her dogs had terrible rashes from being on our lawn....yea keep the fuck off our lawn.

I recently moved to a new apartment complex. The Dallas area is like, 98% concrete everywhere, and my place is no exception. There's this tiny 10x30' little wedge of grass by the dumpster where everyone in the complex takes their dog to poop, and it pretty much a fly-infested cesspit because hardly anyone can be bothered to clean up after their pet, even with the garbage can right there stocked with free biodegradable bags. At least at my old place, they had someone go around and clean up after the lazy assholes once a day so it didn't accumulate so badly and there was a lot more grass overall.

I don't want to add to the problem, which means I have to wade through that shit by one narrow path I've found that is usually safe, yet at the same time I don't want either myself or my dog tracking that back into my apartment. Living in an apartment, you don't have access to hoses, decent water pressure or other modern conveniences, so cleaning poo off your shoes is nasty as hell.

So yeah, I do think it is pretty disgusting, discourteous, and lazy. Some people's dogs even shit in the hallways in the building itself, and they have no shame in leaving it there. It seems like one of those things, where if you're going to have a dog in an apartment, you can take the responsibility to deal with so it's a more pleasant place for everyone else. I could see if you live in the country or on a lot of land, but in tiny/shared spaces, that shit's nasty.

I think I've identified one of the worst subsets of first-world humanity, those who do not see fit to pick up their animals' piles of nasty, sticky vectors of disease that their innocent flower just left on the sidewalk.

Personally, I think it's just about the most filthy thing I can think of, and near as I can tell, 80% of people just don't care. Imagine my surprise when I came home from the store this morning to a sticky green puddle oozing down the sidewalk right in front of my front door. Nasty, nasty, and as it was totally green and totally loose, I had to scrape it up myself and sterilize the sidewalk, because that dog was clearly sick and I don't want my cat to get anywhere near it.

So, what do you think? A terrible subset of humanity, or am I making a big deal out of nothing? Where do stand about people who own pets, but won't go the full distance to be considerate and responsible while doing it? Does seeing a nice, fresh pile of baked goods shat carelessly onto civilization piss you off as much as it does me?
Get over it, it is all part of a cycle, and your being pissed about it reeks of entitlement.

Just for everyone saying that 'it wont make you blind', um, yeah, it actually could: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxocariasis

There was a fairly big news story a couple of years ago where a little girl lost the sight in one of her eyes because she fell over and got dog poo on her hands and then rubbed her face (I think she was about 2).

Clean up after your pet, or train it to go where there aren't going to be little kids running around, it's disgusting for everyone. It's all part of your responsibility as a dog owner.

Also I was walking on the high street yesterday and a dog had shat right where the pavement was blocked off really narrow. People had stepped in it so much it had been tracked everywhere. It was like doing a friggin ballet just to avoid stepping in it.

There's loads of disgusting things on the ground. The shit of various wild animals (bats/possums/squirrels/birds etc.), cat shit, fertilizer and run-off from fertilizer. The obvious solution is not to let your children roll around in shit and hope your pets have the common sense not to either. Even when people pick up their dog's poo there's guaranteed to be some residue.

To further address the danger it poses to children, I don't think it's entirely justified to blame other people if you didn't teach your children that they shouldn't touch their face after touching the ground or other dirty things. If you don't care enough to supervise your younger children and make sure that they don't roll in dirt or stick their dirty hands in their eyes and mouth, tough tits really.

At the end of the day I just don't care enough about anyone else to put myself through the ordeal of feeling of warm faeces through a plastic bag. Sorry.

You can't say "well if you lived where I did", that's the thing, I don't.
Then you can't make "let me tell you how your country works and how you should live your life" posts either. The problem is not whether I have to step on the grass or not, it's people who think that I have to live like them despite the huge differences.

Because it's so uncommon to just trip and fall on the ground.

Someone who lives near me probably snapped and started stalking pet owners who did not pick up after he dirty deed just to pick them up and leave in the respective owner's doorway. Must have been someone with lots of free time, but what I am getting at is that I honestly believe you would deserve if your pet's yearly deposits just fell on your personal belongings.

Or just reported to the police and fined. That works too.

EDIT: yeah, it's a crime in some places.

The irony is overwhelming.
Quote the part where I was specifically tell you what to do and I will admit that I was wrong.

Otherwise... No irony anywhere.

When I was playing outside as a child, I was always warned not to touch my face before I washed my hands and there was always someone watching over me to make sure I didn't. I believe that's called good parenting.

Sure, and if someone did either of those things I would totally deserve it.

Although I must congratulate you for apparently having never littered in your life. I'm impressed.

You didn't, you just wrote many paragraphs at me complaining about standing in shit. Same thing in my book.
But it's not. I never said you should stop what you are doing, just that not every place is like the place you live.

And what do you call "falling with the face right on top of a turd, removing the need for a child to smear it with his/her hands"?

If you fall, it can get on your hands, face or even clothes. You're clinging on one of the various consequences of falling on shit to defend your point, but doesn't change the fact that if one of your kids had shit all over his clothes and you were a couple of miles away from home your day is fucked.

It's not like you're just going to ask around for garden utensils and just hose your children, right?

Yeah - I don't leave things on the ground. If I have trash I can't ditch, I'll just put it on my pockets or on a backpack. Thanks for reminding me that I am responsible, right now I feel like a hero and I kind of deserve recognition after what you said.

If your children fell on a plastic bag would your day be ruined? At least people can litter accidentally, and that won't screw someone's day.

I never touch my dog's shit, even though its clearly stated in my apartment lease agreement that it is required that I do so. I've stepped in dog shit several times while on the apartment grounds, so I feel like I've paid my dues.

Honestly, the fact that this is even an issue shows how decadent and bloated the first world has become. I grew up in the 80's and picking up after your dog wasn't even a thing then.

Now that I think about it, picking up dog shit just adds to the amount of plastic that we as humans, discard daily. One day in the future, we'll all live in houses made out of filthy plastic with plastic water bottles for windows. You will look back and say, man if I had just left that shit where it fell, maybe there'd be less plastic today.

Dog shit is very biodegradable, and on top of that it reintroduces nitrogen and other nutrients essential for plant growth back into the soil. Plastic doesn't. Leave the dog shit alone.

Dog shit is a major disease vector for many things from Salmonella and E. Coli to other nasty things like Giardia and really nasty parasites like roundworms continue their life cycle through dog feces and are transferable to humans. How many people get their dogs de-wormed? Judging by the reactions I saw from many dog owners when I told them the price of de-worming agents, followed by them shrugging and leaving the store I bet it's many more than you might think.

Dog shit is also, by and large, harmful to plants, especially in high quantities. Whether or not it passes a (meager) amount of nutrients to the soil, it kills whatever it touches first, and is, as I said, a vector for many common parasites and diseases.

Many disposal bags are made from biodegradable materials these days. At least they keep the shit sealed up until it starts to break down a little, in a place far, far away from where dozens/hundreds/thousands of people walk and play every day.

Honestly, the fact that this is even an issue shows how decadent and bloated the first world has become. I grew up in the 80's and picking up after your dog wasn't even a thing then.
There was also a time when smoking was healthy for you.

Heartworm preventatives are pretty standard fare for most pets these days. I know that the brand I give my dog is a broad spectrum parasiticide. If you have a dog, and you aren't administering this type of medicine to them, then you shouldn't own one in the first place.

So what if it isn't? There are too many people already. Let them smoke if they want to. Which brings up another point. If you somehow manage to get feces on your face while you are outside, then I say that you deserve to get worms.

The point about smoking was to drive home that just because something was acceptable at one point doesn't mean it is/was healthy or okay. Just because people didn't clean up after their pets 20-30 years ago doesn't mean it was a safe practice.

Also, you underestimate the effectiveness of some vectors of disease transmission. Hookworm (for one) is transmitted through the skin, usually bare feet. You don't need to rub feces on your face to contract worms. Just walking across damp ground that contains parasites awaiting a host is all it takes. The shit that dropped them could have washed away long before that point, too.
