My middle name is dedicated to a friend of my parents who hung himself over his girlfriend leaving him.

Does that count?
I suppose.

My example would be when my homeroom teacher shot himself. A girl had lied for attention and said he molested her, and the school fired him. When no evidence that he ever did anything was found the school refused to hired him and everyone still considered him a statuatory rapist.
I've heard of that, actually. Yeah, it was on the news. That must have been rather shocking for the school. One girl comitted suicide at our schoo, the funeral was massive.

Half-baked trolling or simple idiocy?

You decide!

How about justified insult?

OP is being very insulting and insensitive to people affected by suicide.

I don't know anyone personally. But a friend did die from cancer a few weeks ago. But I guess that's definately not the same.

Isn't "an" hero actually grammatically correct? In terms of grammar and H should be treated like a vowel, right (even if not in common usage)?

Anyway, on-topic:

My best mate's mum killed herself (hanging).

My best mate tried to kill herself multiple times
My current girlfriend tried to kill herself multiple times
I've tried to kill myself multiple times

Mind you, these were all 5+ years ago (3+ in the case of the girlfriend) and now we all go all-out to enjoy life and stick around. I have always gone out of my way to help people, even moreso these days, particularly those suffering from stress and depression (in fact, in my case, that was one of the factors - dealing with everyone else's shit took it's toll).

It's a very sad thing what heavy depression can do to teenagers, particularly when caused by external factors that no kid should be exposed to (bullying, life generally going down the pan to the extent of literally nearly being made homeless, girlfriend getting murdered). I disapprove of the lightness of tone used in the OP and the use of a meme.

Perhaps so but I'm not sure reflecting that anger is justified with asking OP to go kill himself.

Could very well have simply asked OP to be a tad more sensitive to the issue. Although I can understand why the "An hero" reference is brutal and I cringed when I saw it, such a response is still rather over-the-top. Knee-jerk reaction it may have been, it still is goig to stir something up.

I'd suggest removing the 4chan reference, and making it more PC, unless you want a lock. Suicide is a perfectly good word.

OT: Yeah, someone at my mums work, with depression issues. Left behind 2 kids, was pretty sad.
So let me this straight, refrencing 4chan is reason enough to lock a thread, but talking about suicide is all fine and dandy?

You mean people similar to me?
I don't give a shit whether you don't find it offensive, other people will. "An hero" is a flippant and childish way to refer to a sensitive, and sad, issue.

What's wrong with talking about suicide, as long as it's taken seriously? It's not 4chan in particular I was annoyed by, I visit myself, just the way it's used in this thread.

True, very true. Ah well, I asked nicely myself.

I know a few.

One of my Mums friends in Scotland blew the back of his head off with a rifle quite a few years ago.

My Brother-in-Laws brother hanged himself a few years back.

I used to know a guy that was almost totally paralysed from the neck down after jumping into a swimming pool at the wrong end quite a few years back. He was in an electric wheelchair and could only use his hand to control it. Constant care was needed, he had all manner of foreign (stunning) carers. He drank constantly though and managed to get out of a club one night, drive down to the canal and straight into it. Drowning himself was the only way out for him.

He was an awesome bloke though, really lit the room up. About 500 people turned up to his funeral.

That term "an hero" comes from a misspelling on a suicide victim's memorial webpage that was trolled by 4channers. You really shouldn't use it.

Yes, an uncle of mine when I was very young. Don't really remember it, and it'snot the kind of thing you just bring up in conversation.

I've known two people that have gone through with it, one that didn't. Unfortunately, I also know a handful of people who use it as something of a hot button to get attention. -> Why do you mock mortality? Ugh.

This has perplexed me as well. Granted, I'm not an expert of the English language's many rules, so your guess is as good as mine. :p

The full paragraph is here [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/an-hero], so you can read it for yourself.

I think the issue is that this is one of the situations that shortening the OP for TL;DR people doesn't work well. I should have put my story about my homeroom teacher(see above) in the OP rather than in a reply(although it probably would have derailed the thread by going into ethics about the credibility of school kids).

But you do have a point. Just because I'm over it and see horrible things that I got over as something to laugh about doesn't mean everyone else is.

I think 3 of my Uncle's friends hung themselves (one suspected accidental) when he was a teenager and my great-grandad did aswell which shook my Grandad a bit.

A guy I used to know from when I was taking Karate classes. I didn't know him that well, but he always seemed like he had a positive attitude. He was tall and athletic, a great martial artist, and had a lot going for him. All-in-all, a really nice guy. One day he drove out to the edge of the wilderness and shot himself. I have an inkling of what he might have been going through, but I'll never know for sure.

To all those out there affected by suicide, I sympathize. Both with the victims, and those left behind.
