I was thinking to myself of a few games and how they do a genre so well and I decide to see what you escapists would have to say.
My question is what game do you think perfectly defines its respective genre?

I think Crash Bandicoot (the first two at least) perfectly represents the 3d platformer genre as I have yet to find a game that does 3d platforming as well as Crash does.

So I will repeat, what game do you think defines its respective genre?

Just to go against AkJay, Starcraft for RTS.
Marathon = FPS
PGR 4 = Arcade style Racer
Ikaruga = Shmump
GTA 2 = Sandbox

First 5 genres that came to mind.
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast = Lightsaber fun

Free-roam RPG: the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time.
careful you might get some flack for calling it that (but I am behind you that it is part RPG)

EDIT: too late (I should check more posts before I post >.>)

Cave Story is the posterboy for 2-D Platformer, even considering its RPG elements. Control-wise, nothing compares to it; it feels less like jumping than gliding. Yes, even the original Marios are left in the dust :D

Starcraft is the best example for an RTS. Extremely balanced.
MMO is World of Warcraft, as everyone is basically copying it.

Ikaruga = Shump
What is shump? I have never heard of this genre.
My apologies. Shmump is a Shoot 'um up. I just abbreviate it. Doesn't help that I abbreviated wrong the first time though. Thanks for pointing it out.

Action (or whatever the title is for the 3D, heavily focused on melee combat genre)- Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition
Pretty much every big game of this genre that comes out (God of War, Ninja Gaiden) is seen as a DMC clone. Devil May Cry 3 perfected the extreme difficulty and stylish combos that the genre is known for.

Action RPG - Diablo 2:
Every action RPG that comes out is inevitably compared to Diablo 2 (see: Titan Quest, Torchlight).

Beat-em-up - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles In Time
Who doesn't have fond memories of laying beatdowns on foot soldiers with their buddies backing them up, and fighting over who gets the pizza?

RTS - Starcraft
Starcraft is a pure classic. The gameplay is fairly simple in some respects (2 types of resources, 3 races), but each race plays differently in several aspects. For example, when it comes to cloaking, the Terrans have manual cloaking units that lose energy when cloaked, the Zerg have burrowing ground units that can't move or attack (but can stay cloaked indefinitely) and the Protoss have the permanently cloaked Dark Templar, and the permanent cloaking nearby units ability of the Arbiter. Also, YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS.
