To be perfectly fair, this part of the bill is for "aggravated homosexuality", in cases of rape of a minor by a person of the same sex, or where one partner carries the virus that can cause AIDs.
That is to say, they aren't killing gays, they are killing gay rapists and those with HIV, which is noticeably less genocidal.

The petitioning needs to be more about Uganda's long standing institutional discrimination against homosexuality, or about how this bill will imprison those who rent property to homosexuals. Frankly, by focusing on the part that executes rapists, you are focusing on the least egregious part of the bill. Uganda already imprisons those who are "convicted of sodomy", which is far worse than enforcing the death penalty for rapists and those who knowingly transmit HIV.

Not trying to make light of this issue, but uh couldn't you just not let people know your gay and get out of the country asap.

It's like killing someone for a political idea like communism. Can't you just hide it?

...I'm all for sticking it to a country for doing stupid shit, but an online petition? Ooh yeah, that'll scare 'em good. Maybe do something a little more pro-active than signing a petition and feeling like you're making a difference?
And in the next twelve hours, what do you suggest? No it's not much, but it might have some effect.

Signed, would the UN let them do that?
The UN allows other countries to take similar stances towards gays, such as IRAN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Iran skip down to the Legal status section)

Though I have my doubts about the effectiveness of online petitions, I signed it. Let's hope it has some sway with the Government of Uganda.

Sorry, but I think that signing an internet petition is even more useless than doing nothing at all. People who otherwise might have gone on to support action that would challenge this new legislation may just sign this petition and think they've done enough. It would be glorious if more people who did sign the petition would actually go out and do something of real effect, but that tends to not be the case. Now if you want money for a campaign to stop the legislation, I'll lbe happy to donate.

NB I like the idea of being able to direct your concerns straight local leaders though. Good thinking, Avaaz.

Check your facts - they removed the death penalty from the proposed bill. Now it's just life imprisonment if you're convicted of the horrendous crime of not being straight. Fucking Africa and all the evangelical Christians running around messing the place up.

How will this petition change their minds?
Thing is there are actually 2 huge problems in that bill 1- condemining someone for his sexual orientation and 2- death penalty.Having media rising the eye on this issue can only hope for a resolution, and yes I agree it's a low hope. What they can do since someone already brought UN in the thread is not have the death penalty executionable since the UN already signed an universal condon(sp?)to stop it in all countries(even if big members like USA,Iran,China voted against it still got approved-not an anit-american here by no means just stating the facts).

So yes a minimum can be done by our countries diplomats to stop this insanity.

I'm not sure how much good it will do, but I signed it.

Speaking as someone who has homosexual friends and relatives, I find the proposed legislation appalling.

It's not the first time this bill was proposed and was already canceled because of people made their voice heard:
"We've helped stop this bill before, and we can do it again. After a massive global outcry last year, Ugandan President Museveni blocked the bill's progress. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law."

Signed.

I highly doubt Uganda will even listen, but as that famous quote goes "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing".
