Generally I will make three characters for everything. Two of them will be male, and one will be female.

I don't feel the need to be the same gender as my characters.

Oh, and gaining money from other characters by masquerading as a girl? Not something I would do, even if I was able to do so on the games I play.

I have been playing female characters for over a decade now, and I don't see anything wrong with it, so long as said players aren't hiding their true genders. I'm more comfortable with my sexuality than most male gamers (who wont even touch a female PC with a ten foot pole).

I almost always play as girls. It has nothing to do with how they look, or what they can get by being female. I just like coming up with names for female characters more, and for whatever reason I enjoy RPing as a girl more than RPing a guy.

Maybe I'm a closet transexual. I prefer to think that that it is YOU who is the closet transexual. Not that it matters, I won't judge you for your life choices.

I don't think I would choose to play as a male character, but I really don't have a problem playing as a male in COD or Devil May Cry or Mario even. Doesn't make that much of a difference to me. I guess for some games though, Fallout, Mass Effect, Oblivion, it would kind of make it harder for me to get into the game if I was playing as a male character.

On that note, I know several guys that have female characters in WoW and, it boggles my mind, seeing as how they don't need the money.

Well I am female, so I assume you think it is OK for me to make female characters, my 'problem', with your post is it kind of assumes all gamers are men (just your terminology) and the fact that all men who ask this question conveniently forget all the hours female gamers spend as a male character since they have no choice BUT to play as a male character! (Gears Of War for example and pretty much all 3rd and first person shooters, most JRPG's and most other genres) It doesn't bother me, why does it bother men?
I don't even get why it is a topic so often, tbh!

I'm curious: How many people made a female character in Mass effect so they could watch the lesbian "Sexbox" *cough* scene?
Balance it out against all the people who thought that the male voice actor was fucking bollocks and you may have some real numbers. Then, of course, I have to ask you;

Is it really so bad to ask for both?

Also, in World of Warcraft especially, the male characters look fucking stupid as spellcasters, with muscles that would put some pro-wrestlers to shame and all...
Undeads, HUGE. LACK. OF. MUSCLE. But every other race does look odd.
True. I'll also give the Trolls the benefit of the doubt (and an attempt to forget that the Troll females exist). Still, in every other race, even the Elves, the male models are far too bulky. The Draenei don't even look like they're members of the same species...

Ahah Well I played Siren in Borderlands (shooter/rpg) but only because of her special ability...

OT: I don't think it matters what sex people play as, it can get confusing but its just 'playing' as a stated before...

I play whatever type of character I feel like or prefer, played a female in mass effect simply because Jennifer Hales voice acting is utterly superb, played a female human paladin in wow for 4 years simply due to human males having utterly horrid running animations >_> was like a barrel on legs.

I did make a female character in ME, but I ended up deliberately avoiding that scene, because with the background I chose and how I'd been playing the game, it would've been out of character to be into the wussy scientist. I seem to have ended up making a habit of picking race/gender/alignment/etc. either randomly or whatever combination is least like what I've played recently, and then try to actually stay in character in game, just to see what it's like. You get more variety that way (at least in stuff like BioWare games) than always playing "myself...in space!" or "myself...with a robe and wizard hat!" or whatever.

You see, that's just brilliant. And hilarious. And true. Frankly, if you haven't realized by this point that someone having an attractive female avatar in a game does not mean the person is in fact an attractive female, you deserve to be conned. It's the internet, people.

Usually I'll only play a female character if I expect doing so to expand the amount of gameplay content I get out of a game. In my second Mass Effect playthrough I played a woman because a fair amount of the dialogue significantly changed based on gender. (Also, if you're going to have alien sex, you might as well go all the way and make it lesbian alien sex.)

Nope. When I do make a girl character it's pretty much alwayes to draw money from really pathetic people around the server.

Usually I play a female character the second time I play an RPG because of the different dialogue choices. In a game like Fallout 3 it doesn't make much of a difference but in, for example Dragon Age, the numerous times when the dialogue will be different depending on gender.

The only reason I played as female in Mass Effect was because I didn't want to see men in that armor they wear, it looks really gay.

I play WoW, I'm a female and have a mixture of both characters. Too me I don't look as deep as roleplaying as them - infact my roleplaying realm toon is actually a male.
I just prefer the look of females, mainly blood elves. It's as simple as that for me.

I tend to always have a male character as my main, so people don't feel the need to gift me with handouts because they think I have tits, but instead they gift me with handouts because I am so obviously amazing.
But as for any alts I end up making, I just go with whatever looks better for a certain class/race combination.
And then if it's an offline game like DA:O, I'll usually just make some form of sexy, be it male or female.

I tend to play as a guy, purely because that's the default option in most cases. If I can be bothered, I make my character the same gender as me (female), so my WoW toon is female.

I occasionally do it to see what difference (if any) the sex of the Player Character makes the game. Always on the 2nd or later playthrough though.

And my only complete playthrough of Mass Effect was done with a female Sheperd (Jennifer Hale is a much better voice actor than whoever does the male Sheperd)

Exactly what I was going to say. It's not that Male Shepard is bad, per se, he's just melodramatic. Hale actually sounds real.
