If an "uber high level guy" gives somebody money purely on the basis of what they have between their legs, then frankly he deserves getting scammed that way.
I'm gonna second this.
Though luckily never come across anyone sad enough to do this.

I always play as a female character though, not just because i AM female, but because in every other game i play the lead character is male. Its just a nice change.

I'm male. I only roll male toons when I'm going to be actually role-playing (I have no problem with males who RP as females, but I'm like saksak above. I just don't have the understanding of their "logic" to be able to do so convincingly). Otherwise, if it's just an Avatar and there's no difference in stats, I roll female. The skins are better (even the awful, anorexic she-assassins in Guild Wars), and smaller (so it's easier to see around them in 2nd-person).

Speaking of non-MMOs (since I don't play MMOs), I usually go about 50/50. In some games the female player character feels a bit of an afterthought, while sometimes it manages to enhance to plot greatly (KOTOR, anyone?).
Playing as female does actually often make the character more interesting, mostly because it gives you a certain distance, making her seem more like an actual character rather than simply your avatar.

I'm curious: How many people made a female character in Mass effect so they could watch the lesbian "Sexbox" *cough* scene?
Bah, I went for Kaidan... which in retrospect is a bit gay.

Let's get this out of the way: some MMOs have classes that you can only be as a girl avatar.

And aside from a female toon on WoW now and then (in which cases I rolled female purely for the hell of it) that's pretty much been the extent of my female characters.

Also, if I have a broke toon on a server and I don't have a DK on that server, I sometimes make Death knights(random race, random gender), run through the opening, sell everything I can, and mail the broke toon the money.

I have played some girl characters on RPG (currently playing a girl elf in Dragon Age, and my main character in fallout is also a girl). Not because of the reasons menctioned in the begining (since I play all my RPGs offline), but because that is part of the fun of role-playing... it is not like I am a paladin in real life, you know.

I pretty much always make female characters at some point. Typically, the sex ratio is roughly equal, and in games where you're only allowed one character, I have an even chance of going either way. Certain games, like WoW, see me with a preponderance of female characters. Mostly due to aesthetics; the female models are more pleasant to look at in a lot of cases (save orcs and dwarves, for some reason), and the armors I favor tend to look more natural on them.

Never noticed any preferential treatment, myself. One guy on City of Heroes asked me to cyber at one point, until I informed him that I'm straight.

I pretty much always use a female character. I don't see my character as me in RPG's/MMO's I see them as the lead role in my own little story. I think women look nicer than men, even in pixel form, and so if the choice is between a male or a female character, I'll choose female. However, if there is a choice for 'robot deathmachine' I'll take that one everytime (and it will represent me). Basically, all other things being equal, I will choose whatever is most visually appealing.

I cannot bring myself to play an MMO as anything other than my correct (male) gender. I will generally play female on a second or third play though in a single player game however. The problem is, I don't want an erronious perception to result from my choice of gender. The only exception to this was Warhammer, where the only way to play a Witch Elf was to play as a female.

I make a female character when I feel like it, (usually when the males look stupid, eg elementalists in Guild Wars) but I don't pretend to be a girl.

It has been my thing for a very long time to be a female character in games (don't judge) when given the option because most games I HAVE to be male and I like a change, plus if you are spending the game looking at someone you might as well like what you see right? also on MMOs when I play as a female I tell people my real gender to avoid these things other times I stay genderless and never refer to myself as a male or female...

I tend to play both genders to see if the story differs any. But sometimes it's mandatory, like in Fallout 3 I always end up useing a Female because of the Black Widow Perk that comes in handy with the 95% male NPC's and eneimes that I encounter.

The first dark side character I made in KOTOR 2 was a girl, it wasn't any different really, though if you choose a girl you get that useless pussy the Disciple instead of the Handmaiden which is obviously much more useful in combat.

yeh, in diablo 2 i did, but this was due to the sorceress being completely overpowered in pvp outside of hell mode (against those with poor elemental protection of course, see the plan was to kick ass and transfer winnings to a better char).

And you can only be a female sorceress, there is no male equivelent, dont even suggest the necromancer to me, bar skellyzerging he was worthless.

needless to say, i didnt use that character long after i had alot of people ask me if i was a girl and started hitting on me.

Scenario #1.

*Girl wearing a bikini walks up to uber high level guy*
Girl (guy): Hey can i hav som money pls im poor :)
Guy: Holy shit are you a real girl. Like in real life
Girl guy): yeh
*The uber high level hands over every last penny he has*
Girl (guy) thnkx :)
*Uber high level adds the Girl [guy] to his friends list)
Wait wait, who would be so stupid as to give money to someone just because they are a girl?
I mean honestly, that seems really really...well, stupid.
Anyone who get roped into that trap deserves it.

To paraphrase Francis from PvP, "If I'm gonna watch someone's butt for hours on end while I run around in an MMO it better be a chick's."

That being said, I've never said I was a girl IRL or tried to fleece folks for money because my toon has digital breasts, that would be lame.

I've made female characters before. Lets be honest, when you have to stare at your avatar's arse for x amount of hours of gameplay, sometimes you want something to look at =D.
I can't stress enough how true this is.

I have about %50 of my RPG characters female, for aesthetic reasons. I suppose the above reason is part of it, but also there's a matter of style. I remember thinking that Male Mesmers in GW looked silly, but female Mesmers seemed to work. Also, in a medium that is visually pleasing, females are more pleasing, even if you ignore the Bikinis and sex appeal. Besides, I like the RPG roles of magic based DPS and sneaky, speedy things, which, trope wise, led themselves towards females. This balances with the slight desire to want to play a character similar to me, and the desire to avoid funny looks from friends, to an end result of a pretty even split.
