I only owned a Wii, until just recently someone raffled off their old 360 and some games at an arcade in town and my brother managed to win. I'm not a fan of the 360's network, mainly because it seems to be populated mainly by pricks who will gladly kick you for not being able to afford a microphone, or for killing a teammate who kept trying to kill you first(yes on purpose).
Personally i think that the Wii is pretty much tailor-made for internet compatibility and don't understand why there isn't an online network for the wii-gamers yet.
True, that happens a lot on XBL. I guess it's because most 360 starter kits come with a microphone, while with the PS3 that's another 30 bucks purchase (well technically you can use any USB or Blue Tooth headset with it). It's kind-of annoying in Bad Company 2 where more (mature) people with a mic would be nice, improving teamwork and all.
I must say that it depends on the game as well. MW2 on the PS3 was probably just as annoying as MW2 on XBL. Every time I booted up a game I promptly muted everyone. It doesn't help either that I'm in Europe, where most of the time an online game is populated by a dozen of nationalities that all scream their own language (and probably swearing in it) at the same time. Góds people, don't force me to go Pulp Fiction on your ass.
As for the Wii, yes I find that very weird as well. From what I've seen it has a couple of fantastic games for multi-player (the upcoming remake of GoldenEye alone is worth it) yet you have to fumble around with friend codes. A real shame.
Maybe Nintendo's next console will have a smoother online network, they've always been late with things like that. The GameCube lacked it too, even more so than the Wii.
