And why the hell aren't they banned or on probation??? how is this site going to remain serious if we go around screwing each other's computers? That poor guy probably just lost a great deal of money because of you, hope your happy since he did not even respond (therefor he probably deleted system32, hope you burn in hell)

It's your only option. Comply or be assimilated.
You guys are assholes. He hasn't responded since you told him where to find it.
There is no proof that he actually was stupid enough to delete a file which had fucking System written in it. He probably just went offline.

If he did not, however, go offline then I'm sorry but I will have to laugh. You might call me "emotionless" but hell, the guy was to stupid to use Google to see what System32 really is or how he could get rid of that certain virus.

But if you look at the first comments you'll see someone told him to call Technical Support right after a user told him to delete System32. It was pretty obvious that the tone I and the other user used in our comments was sarcastic and if he was to fucking stupid to realize that then he deserved w/e he did, if he did it that is.

So, you're asking the mods to put me and the other user on probation for being sarcastic? There was no way of realizing that he would actually take that joke serious. How was I supposed to know the intelligence of the OP extends to that of a 10 year old?

I and the other user did not, in any way, screw with that users computer. He was the one who supposedly pulled the trigger, not me. If he wasn't smart enough to use Google and see if that file is important or not then that's his fault, not mine or anyone else's. If he can't take a joke, can't research before doing, can't call fucking customer support, can't read the goddamn Windows XP manual, can't Google "free antivirus" and download AVG then brother, I have no pity for him "losing" money and fucking up his computer.

Besides, getting a copy of Windows XP is piss easy and getting one for free is just a few clicks away. Anything else he payed for(Steam games, video editing programs or such) can easily be reinstalled since he has the CDs and when it comes to steam he can just download the games online.

So, in reality, he lost 0 bucks.

ok, im just going to say that im an idiot and i feel really dumb right now, but im hoping that some of you are smarter than

i was browsing the web and a popup came up, it forced my pc to download a file, and started to open up a bunch of stuff, so i went to the ctrl alt delete, but then it stopped me from being able to do anything, so i, not knowing what to do restarted the pc hoping that the problem would go away

of course it didn't

i opened windows defender, because im cheap and dont have another virus protection on my pc, and it opened a noticably different defender,in fact it says at the very top bar unregistered version like its mocking me

so i right clicked the link to open windows defender to see if i could find the source of the redirect, and it opened up notepad with a program written on it,
i also tried to find the actual folder the damn thing is in so i can delete it but so far no luck

can someone tell me how to save my pc
It did not force your computer to do anything. You clicked it, and opened it. It's your own fault Get a decent anti virus&spyware detector (avast and spybot) and clean it out.

It is in your case, but to someone who is upset and panicking, maybe not. People who are desperate for help often take the first advice given in those situations.

The other used just wrote "delete system32", nothing more or less. How can his tone be "sarcastic"? Sarcasm is something which is very hard to detect in a text form unless it's absolutely spelled out. We've all had situations where a friend has misinterpreted or not detected sarcasm in an SMS or on a forum - it happens all the time.

You shouldn't respond to a request to a plea for serious advice with a joke anyway. That's a pretty mean-spirited thing to do. If it WAS a joke, why did you then give him a second reply with detailed instructions on where to find the files? Obviously part of you WANTED him to delete his computer. Which isn't funny.

Also, the person you're giving advice to may be really young and naive. Is that their fault? Maybe but it doesn't make what you did justified. You were young and naive once too. He probably didn't delete his system32 folder but he just might have. What does it say about this site that people on here give out advice like this? You're lucky that I'm not a moderator, they'll probably have more mercy on you for this than I would.

DO NOT DELETE SYSTEM32!!!

Your computer will never work again. Send the computer to an expert. No sense in destroying your computer when you can pay a little cash and have everything fixed.

Delete System32.
Get a good Anti-Virus, like Avast. It could also be malware. Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Yeah...if you ever get a pop up claiming that your computer is infected and shows "My Computer" with a bunch of file errors and stuff, its best to exit out from all of it. It's a trick to try and get you to download malware and such onto your computer.

And, I knwo you said you have Windows Defender, but seriously, invest in Trend Micro Anti-Virus. It's $70 well spent. Trust me on that much.

Glad to see you're still with us mcgroobber.

If you haven't fixed the problem yet my advice is to download Avast (anti-virus) and Spybot - Search and Destroy (anti-spyware).

EDIT:these two are free and I use them so I can vouch for their quality, other people have suggested some others that I know are good too, these are just the ones I use myself.
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html (the first one on the download list, version 1.6.2)

Then once they're installed, start your computer in safe mode (usually by tapping the 'F8' key while your computer starts up), and run both scans. These scans could take a long time so do it when you won't be needing your computer for a while.

If these scans find the virus and quarantine/delete/move to chest it than you're all good. If not, we may need to try more drastic measures.

Good luck.

Aye, if this program is what i think it is than all it wants is to trick you into paying them money and letting them install another program that will act as spy-ware. The one you currently have is probably what is called Ad-ware, as in it advertises things to you, except in a very sneaky(evil) way.

That reminds me, there are programs designed to combat ad-ware too. Most Anti-viruses will get the worst ad-ware but you may need something that specialises to get them all. try Ad-Aware:

http://download.cnet.com/Ad-Aware-Free-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

If the other programs and your mate can't get rid of it. I saw some of the guys earlier suggesting AVG anti-virus, if your PC doesn't like avast than AVG is worth a go, I've used it in the past and it's not bad. It's also free too.

EDIT: If you're taking it over to a friend's it may be worth taking your harddrive out, connecting it to his rig as a back-up drive and scanning it that way. Depends if he's confident in his own virus protection. :)

Yea, sounds like you may have picked up a nasty buggah.

Was working on a friends computer that had caught a nasty bug that wouldnt let you view hidden files (as it his itself in one to hide) i went into the regedit and changed the value on one file to 1 instead of 2 and ran AVG and it was all good.

Can you view hidden files?

Did you try starting up in safe mode? After that first bios/system screen and before the windows screen push f8 and it'll give you an option to boot up in safe mode. Try installing AVG while in safe mode then and run the scanner.

Eh... any more detail would be nice.

My suggestion would be AVG or Norton, the latter if you're ok with spending money. Although, if you have games on your computer, AVG might not do too well, as it sometimes prevents games with anti-hack programs from playing. It usually associates this with the name "Themida32" and trust me, it is a massive *****.

i went and did the thing to view hidden files then searched the date for any modified files to see if i could find the file modified today, and didn't see anything unusual

how do i know if files are still withheld

Well if you are able to see hidden folders then this is something completely different, as the guy i got rid of would simply switch your view option back to 'do not show hidden folder and files'

Did you try to install and run AVG while in safe mode?

Hmm... otherwise i'd try googling 'Computer will not allow antivirus to install' and you should find some tech forums that can give you some tips and guides. I'd like to claim im an expert but i am not, i usually get by doing some homework on my particular symptoms and searching google for why they may be occuring.

Sadly, as a last resort if you cant find anything i'd go buy a removable hard drive and back up any and all photos/documents/videos/music whatever you want to save from that computer and then reformat it with windows.

That is usually the fix for everything... why i back up everything important.

Oh and before you get sad, have you tried running a system restore to a time earlier in the week or day, antime before the incident?
