Staryu was bounding up ahead of Alan, eager to join the ongoing race, with Magneton following obediently. The prospect of a rest was just what Alan needed to catch up to Magnus.

The trainer looked back down the trail to the still clearly-visible outpost. They'd barely started yet and already they were stopping for a rest... He half-sighed and began to catch up.

"You know that you didn't have to run, Brandon." Magnus said to his friend. "Still... It's good to see that you all made it up okay. That means were already at the first checkpoint."

Magnus pointed to a small flag implanted in the ground as a marker.

"We can go slower from here... We're about a quarter of the way up." Magnus explained. He returned Red and Quillz to their Pokeballs, leaving Reynard out to walk beside him. "Alright. Let's get going. We'll make sure not to get too far ahead."

The group continued up the mountain after only stopping for a few moments, as they still had a distance to go.

After another hour-and-a-half, the group was almost three-quarters of the way up the volcano. They had stopped at a small outpost on the mountain, which was essentially a small air-conditioned shack where hikers could stop to refill their water supplies. Magnus took a long drink from his canteen and topped it off. The heat was becoming less stifling as they ascended, but it was still god-awful.

"Come on, guys." Rodney said to the group. "Once everyone is watered, let's get going again. You're going to be amazed at the view from the top."

"Yeah, let's get a mov-... Look." Magnus said, stopping mid-sentence. "Brandon, look."

Magnus pointed in the direction of a Torkoal rooting around in the loose rocks, the Pokemon Brandon was looking for on the mountain. This particular Torkoal was a rarity, though.

"Oh my god..." Brandon said quietly. "It's got a red shell, instead of black."

"It's skin is different, too. Yellow, not red." Magnus pointed out. "If I were you, I'd catch it. You did say you've been wanting one, yeah?"

Brandon stared at the rare Torkoal for a second be fore smiling. "Yup and I couldn't ask for a better candidate." Brandon said grabbing a pokeball from his belt. "Rash, c'mon out." He said letting out the toad pokemon much to it's dismay. Oh c'mon! You couldn't have called me out near a pool or something, but nooooo it had to be on a freakin volcano.

"Hey your lucky I'm letting you battle at all. Besides that Torkoal is rare and we need a fire pokemon on our team." Brandon said to his disgruntled pokemon. "Now Bubblebeam!" Brandon said pointing at the Torkoal. Rash let out a stream of bubble that hit the Torkoal dead on, but the Torkoal was still up. It let out a burst of purple smoke that went strait towards rash. The Smog had enveloped Rash causing him to start coughing. "Rash get out of the Smog and use Hypnosis." Rash qickly obeyed it's trainers orders and son it's eyes glowed lue and the Torkoal fell asleep.

"Yes now for one last thing." Brandon said throwing an empty pokeball at the sleeping pokemon. The ball shook back and forth for a few minutes and was finally still. "YES!" Brandon shouted as he picked up his new Pokemon. He used a Full Heal on Rash before returning him to the pokeball

sorry if that seemed a little rushed, but it's 2 am here and I'm tired.

"Good catch, Brandon." Magnus complimented his friend. "Now I just have to find a Fire Stone, and we'll be done with our business here. Keep an eye out for me guys. Okay?"

The group affirmed Magnus's request and continued towards the top of the mountain.

"Fire stone, fire stone, where are you?" Staryu hopped playfully beside his trainer, keeping a sharp - whatever it is a Staryu has instead of an eye - open for the precious stone. Not that it helped much. Finding a specific stone on a volcano is like searching for a certain grain of sand on a beach. Almost impossible.

But the Pokemon carried on optimistically. He'd been getting more and more cheery as they ascended the mountain, now he was dizzy with excitement.

Alan was just dizzy. Dizzy from having walked too far and too high in one go and now he wanted a break. But also a bit glad that he was almost at the top. Soon they would be going down the volcano, a much easier task than going up.

About forty-five minutes later, the group reached the summit of the mountain. It was about half-past two, in the afternoon, so the group decided to lunch at the top of the mountain.

The volcano wasn't exactly the stereotypical image of a volcano with the large cavernous opening and bubbling magma inside. It looked like a normal mountain, save for all the obsidian formations that speckled the rocky faces. The top of the mountain was actually rather flattened, and it was slightly rocky. This was probably due to the eruption five years ago, and the now hardened magma had become rock, and accrued a small layer of soil over those five years, as quite a few small plants grew from the ground.

"It's not that hot up here." Dani remarked at the lower temperature than on the ground. "It's nice weather up here."

"Yeah, it is." Jeffrey said, rather calmly. "It's relaxing... I don't even feel like beating the shit out of Lucario right now."

I feel the same way about you. Lucario replied. It's very peaceful... Almost eerily quiet.

Magnus nodded softly, and took a deep breath. He reached down to pet Reynard, but the small Fox Pokemon wasn't there. He turned around and saw the Vulpix digging at a small bush.

"What is it Reynard, did you find something?" Magnus asked his Pokemon.

"Vulpix, Vul Vul Vulpix! Vulpix!"There's something beneath this... Some kind of energy. I think it might be what we're looking for.

"Here, let me help." Magnus pulled out a pokeball and called out Tank. "Tank, uproot this bush for me, please."

"Rhyhorn!"Absolutely. Tank snorted and uprooted the bush with his powerful horn, tearing up a small portion of the rocky volcanic soil beneath. Underneath where it had been, a small patch of shiny red crystal could be seen. Magnus returned Tank, and began to break away at the rock surrounding the stone, Reynard helping him.
After a few minutes of digging, Magnus pulled the Fire Stone out of the ground and held it in the sunlight. The deep red crystal had the signature appearance of a flame within it when held against the light. It was a Fire Stone of excellent clarity and quality.

"This... Is perfect." Magnus said aloud. "Are you ready, Reynard?"

"Vulpix.." Ready..

"So engrossed in finding a Fire Stone that you never even thought about the dangers of digging into rock suspended over a volcano?" Alan tutted, hoping Magnus would understand the luck he'd just had in not breaking the layer of rock underneath them. Especially having used Tank for it. By all means Tank should have cracked the rock just by standing there...

Or maybe Alan was just being overly cautious. He didn't like it this high up, the air was too thin and the fact that the only thing separating them from a fiery doom was a thin crust that Magnus seemed intent on getting rid of didn't help him much.

"Can we get going now?"

Staryu cut away from his tour around the volcano's plateau and gave a disappointed sigh... somehow. "We came all this way and there's no lava?"

"Relax Alan..." Magnus commented. "We're not hovering tenuously over our death. We're not in any danger of falling into a fiery chasm of lava."

Magnus patted Alan on the shoulder, and knelt back down. He placed the Fire Stone in front of Reynard and waited. Reynard placed a paw on the stone, and began to glow with a white light. He began to grow, more than doubling in size. His legs became proportionally longer, and his body proportionally slimmer. His tails split, lengthened, and became more bushy. When the light faded, his once brownish-orange fur had turned a very light, almost white, blond. He stood as a powerfully beautiful Nine-Tailed Fox Pokemon.

"Ni-ine! Tails!" This is amazing! The newly evolved Ninetails howled into the air. His fur rippled with newfound power, and he felt the need to test out his new body. "Ninetails, Nine Ninetails." I feel so alive.

"Alright, Reynard." Magnus said to his Pokemon. "Let's get started going back down. If we're quick, and lucky, we might be able to make it down before the sun sets completely. Or would any of you like to sit up here a while longer?"

"While the view is nice," Brandon said turning back to the group. "I've done what I came here to do, so I'm ready to go whenever." Brandon looked at the pokeball containing his newly caught pokemon trying to figure out what to name it. First I need to know if your male or female. Brandon let his new pokemon out of it;s pokeball. It let out a puff of smoke as it surveyed it's surroundings. It walked over and laid down next to Brandon and looked at him.

"Torkoal, Tor Tor Torkoal. It is good we finally get a chance to talk. Since I was hatched I was told to stay away from humans. But you and your friends seem alright. I will be glade to have you as my trainer.

"Thank you for trusting us. Now tell me are you a boy or girl?" He asked out right. The shiny Toroal seemed a little thrown off by the question but answered "Tor." Female "Well then how about 'Fate' as a name. Since it is almost unheard of to find any pokemon with an alternate coloration like yours it must ether be fate or extreme luck to run into you." She pondered for a moment and nodded her head. Yes that is a fine name.

The sun had begun to set once the group had fully descended the mountain. The entire group was tired, so they decided to set up camp at the base, rather than go into town for the Pokemon Center. After helping set up camp, Magnus assembled his bow and arrows, and set out to hunt.

"I'll be back before dark." Magnus said to them. "Don't wait up to make dinner if I'm not back by then."

Out in the bush, in the rough-and-tumble of nature, Magnus felt a peace he had not felt for a while. There was nothing around except for him and his prey... This was the hunt.
Magnus heard a rustling noise, and quickly nocked an arrow and held the bow drawn. He stood extremely still, waiting for whatever it was to come out. He saw a pair of ears perch up out of the bush, and then a Buneary. With a slow movement, Magnus released the arrow, silently killing the Pokemon. Moving quietly, Magnus picked up his prey, and pulled the arrow from it, when he heard another rustle. It was a second Buneary coming out of a different bush. Without thinking, Magnus shot and killed it with the same arrow as the first. He pulled the arrow from the body of his prey, and loaded the brace of Rabbit Pokemon into an empty plastic garbage bag and began heading back to camp.

Magnus arrived back at camp, where Rodney and Alan were sitting by the near-roaring fire. Dani was helping Jeffrey and Jared set up the tents. Keeping a fair distance away from the group, Magnus pulled out the first Buneary from the garbage bag, and set to work skinning it.

His blade pierced the hide of the Pokemon, and Magnus slid it down along its torso. Magnus peeled the hide from the Buneary, keeping it as one single piece of skin and fur. He removed the second Buneary from the bag, and did the same to it as the first. With the hides safely removed, Magnus began to disembowel the Pokemon.

"Hmm... You seem focused." Magnus heard from over his shoulder. He turned his head and saw Alan watching him.

"Hey... How long have you been watching?" Magnus asked.

"I got here as you were pulling the skin from the second one. Don't let me bother you."

"Gotcha." Magnus murmured and returned to stripping the Pokemon. He cut into the organ sack of the Pokemon, and began pulling out various organs and intestine, placing them into the empty garbage bag.

"Wow, you must have a strong stomach... Don't let Dani see you doing this, she might scream." Alan joked.

"I've been hunting since I was eight-years-old. I guess I'm used to these things... Some people don't realize where their food comes from, but don't really care. Ignorance is bliss, they say..." Magnus had finished emptying out the first Buneary, and proceeded to work on the second.

That evening, the group ate very well, then quickly all fell asleep. As the next morning arrived, they quickly set out for the port on the north side of Cinnabar Island, where they would take a ferry to Pallabar, Rodney's home.

****

"So, you're family will be waiting for us when we arrive, Rodney?" Jared asked, standing aboard the deck of the ferry as it glided through the water.

"Yeah... You'll be able to see my Mom right when we get there..." Rodney explained. "She's Pallabar's Nurse Joy. My Aunt should be there too, she's one of Pallabar's police officers... My dad's sister, Jenny."

"Wha..." Magnus was awestruck for a moment. "You mean, that you're related to both all the Jennies and all the Joys? Sweet Arceus... How many cousins do you have?"

"Way too many." Rodney joked.

****

As the ferry docked on the small island south of Pallet Town, Rodney, Magnus, and the rest of the group stepped carefully onto the pier. At the end, Rodney's mother was standing next to his father, a man with dark-green hair and goatee that were slightly graying. Rodney's mother ran out to meet her son, and gave him a huge bear-hug.

"Oh Rodney..." The Nurse Joy said her eyes slightly tearing. "I've missed my little boy so much."

She kissed Rodney's cheeks and then grabbed one of his ears.

"You've had your father and I worried absolutely sick!" She yelled, tugging with a strength only mothers possess.

"Ow! Mom, stop it! Ow, that hurts! Let go! OW!" Rodney cried in pain. Jeffrey merely laughed at his companion's misfortune.

"Hahaha... Poor Rodney. It sucks to be you, right now." Jeffrey said meanly.

****

"Thank you for helping take care of my son." Rodney's father thanked the group as they relaxed in the family's living room. "From what I've heard, Magnus. I owe you the most thanks. You've helped Rodney through a lot, he really admires you."

"I... Thank you." Magnus accepted the man's gratitude. "I must thank you for letting us stay here."

"Of course. Take your time and recuperate... You've all been through so much in the last few months. You all deserve a rest... Once you leave, though... Rodney won't be joining you."

"He won't?" Dani asked plainly. "Why not?"

"Simply put... He's grounded."

****

Four days later, the group of Trainers was one person short, as all but Rodney headed towards Pallet Town. Another ferry ride later, the group of Trainers was in Pallet Town, and headed towards Professor Oak's lab.

When they arrived, and when the Professor saw them, he nearly had a heart attack.

"My goodness..." He exclaimed when he saw Magnus, Jared, and Jeffrey. "You're back. My, you three look so much older than when I first met you."

"Indeed we have, Professor." Magnus said flatly. "I see you haven't changed much."

"Yes, but I'm an old man. Change comes slowly for me..." He said, and then greeted those he had not met. "Hello... It's nice to meet you all. Please step inside. We have much to discuss."

****

"Well then... I guess this is where I say goodbye to you all." Magnus said to the group. "I don't know if I'll see any of you again, but it was wonderful traveling with you all."

"You're leaving?" Jared asked. "That's crazy. If you go off by yourself, you'll get killed."

"He's right, Magnus." Jeffrey agreed. "This may seem strange coming from me, but don't do something so stupid."

"I've thought this out very well." Magnus explained. "There are things that I have to do, places that I need to go. I can't ask any of you to come with me, nor would I if I could. I'm sorry... But I must do this alone."

"But... You can't leave us." Dani said sadly. "What will happen when you're gone?"

"You'll all get along fine without me. Don't worry..." Magnus reassured her.

"It seems that we can't convince you otherwise about this." Alan said critically. "How long have you been planning this?"

"Since we left Cinnabar, maybe even longer." Magnus admitted. "I wanted to stay with you to see you guys safely here."

The sound of a helicopter approaching the laboratory were heard. It grew faintly louder, until eventually the spinning of the reverberated throughout the building. Outside, Pokemon stared at the sky, watching as it landed in a clearing just outside. The trees shook from the force of the air around them being rapidly moved. Flying-Pokemon landed, unable to keep from being knocked down by the gusts. A single boy stepped out of the helicopter once it had touched ground, his blue hair slightly covering his yellow eyes.

A knock on the door was heard, and the Professor opened it.

"Howdy, folks..." The boy, Magnus' brother Maddox, said as the door was opened for him. "Magnus, the chopper is waiting outside for you."

"I'll be right out, Maddox. Just give me a minute."

"Hurry it up... We don't have all day." Maddox responded. "I'll be outside."

Magnus turned to his friends and said goodbye to them.

"Dani, be brave... Your Pokemon will keep you safe. I'll miss you." They hugged, Dani's eyes forming tears. "Jared. Try not to drink too much. Jeffrey... Um... Good luck. Alan, keep everyone safe. Brandon, keep your spirits up. Goodbye, I'll miss you all."

Magnus left the building, a single tear falling from his face. He boarded the helicopter, and watched as his friends watched him leave from the ground.

****

What does the future have in store for our heroes? Who sent the helicopter for Magnus? What will happen of Dani, Alan, Brandon, Jared, and Jeffrey? Will Team Rocket succeed? What happened to the Assassin? Find out the answers next time, in Pokemon!
