First thing first, so they had all gone Math equation on us eh (X and Y)? I guess they had took some notes from Adventure Time (mathematical).
The X and Y play up the 3D aspect of the game. It's the first 3D Pokemon game, so the versions are called X, Y and Z. The dimensions of 3D.
So you had pretty much sums up what the possible third game will be called aswell.

The grass type reminds me of a wood chuck.

I feel like the final evolution for the fire type will be an Anthromorphic (Renamon-looking) Fire/Psychic for some reason. It has that sort of feel to it. (By the way, the fox line may have been done before but this is a kitsune (However you spell it), We are lacking in that department)

This is the first time I won't like a water type starter. A frog is one thing but it's like they hardly tried with him and just put all of their effort into the grass or fire starters.
Would make sense for it to be a woodchuck.

I'm just a little skeptical about the fire starter, because even though it is a fox, they have turned the Gens 3-5 fire starters into fire/fighting (which, need I remind, were a chicken, monkey, and a pig. At least the monkey being fire/fighting made sense). Although a fire/psychic would be interesting, considering they did something similar with Darmanitan in Gen 5.

Z seems to be the choice that makes most sense. People were thinking the third in Black/ White gen would be Gray, but I think the letter Z is more marketable than the color gray. Pokemon Z sounds cooler than Pokemon Gray. Which might be why last gen we got Black 2 and White 2, rather than gray. If Nintendo continues the number 2 trend and we see two more versions (sequels) rather than a third version, maybe they'd be called XZ and YZ.

Ha, I knew they would run out of colors eventually. Now that they have moved onto the alphabet, they got tons more characters to choose from. Besides that, I am throwing money at the screen and nothing is happening, this looks really freaking awesome. If there was ever a reason for me to get a 3DS then this game is the reason.

Wasn't expecting this. Seems like it wasn't long enough ago that they released Pkmn BW.

Still, nice to have a 3D pokemon, even if the X & Y legendaries look kinda stupid.

I'm being a bit cynical about this.
The 3D graphics look cool and the protagonists looks cool.
The starters look meh.
The Grass starter looks like something from Happy Tree friends
The Fire type fox has been done before and if they do make it fire/psychic or fire/fighting then I wont be impressed.
The Water type... actually looks pretty good. I just hope it doesn't become Water/Ground
The legends look pretty decent (Hopefully no Dragons or Psychics).

Hey, now I finally have some reason to get a 3DS. Still, I probably won't get these until after I at least beat the elite 4 in my White version, which won't happen until I complete my Pokedex in my Diamond version. Damn gaming priorities!

I totally agree with you tbh. I just find after generation 3, the starters just got progressively worse :s I like the 3D take on it now that was fun to watch, big open world it seems, looks like a lot of fun. Legends look kinda cool but I've just been cynical about every legendary after Arceus. He was supposed to be creator of all pokemon, "GOD". Now they have these new legendary pokemon coming out each gen after which I'm sitting there um...ok :/ idk

Well, time to get a 3DS it seems.
Sigh, this proves that I'm addicted to Pokemon. I've told myself that gen V is the last one, not because I didn't like it but it was obvious that gen VI will be on the 3DS and I didn't want to buy one just for one game. But as soon as I saw the video, I just thought 'I must have this!'
Oh well, any other good games on the 3DS that have been or will be released, to make the purchase more justifiable?

OT:
The graphics look really good, I'd like to see some more footage from battles.
No word on the story yet, I wonder what the bad guys will be after this time. The deer looking legendary could maybe be an indication for something like Princess Mononoke. So, maybe the bad guys will pollute the environment and you have to stop them?
The legendaries themselves look really good, especially the flying legendary. There is something mysterious about them, something that the legendaries in gen IV and V lacked.
The grass starter looks like a rodent with green fur, doesn't really seem "grassy" to me. The water one is alright, I'd like to know what his final evolution looks like and judging from the colors, he looks like a water/ice type. I'll probably pick the fire starter, just hope its evolution won't look like Ninetails. But, usually when a fire starter looks anthropomorphic, it's going to be fire/fighting and any type that isn't fighting for the fire starter, is fine by me. Seriously Nintendo, stop that.
I hope that the games will have difficulty settings like B2/W2 have but I'd prefer to choose that from the beginning. Not after I've finished the game.

Finally they're going to release the games simultaneously, took them long enough.

Jeez, another generation already? It feels like the current one has just came out not too long ago.

Regardless, while I don't really like the looks of the grass starter, the fire and water starter at least look interesting. Plus I kinda like the legendaries.

Plus it's nice to see the series transition into full 3D. As much as I liked the sprites in previous Pokemon games, it's always nice to see something different.

Overall, I look forward to this. Now I just need to get around to playing through White 2...

Yes!!

Thank you, Game Freak! You have restored my confidence in the Pokemon handheld series once again! We're finally moving to an all 3D Pokemon handheld RPG with great animations and great looking Pokemon. I hope the that rest of the roster is just as great (kinda bummed a little that some Gen 5 Pokemon are returning, but w/e). I look forward more updates and it looks like I'm going to have to save up for a 3DS now.

It looks good, and finally Game Freak are putting some inovation into the franchise.

I just want the fire fox starter and call it Mozilla.

I'm intrigued for sure. Gen 5 at least was interesting on a gameplay and aesthetics front. Trying to shake things up at least. I doubt the formula will budge, but baby steps I guess.

Considering I only have 2 3DS exclusives (both ports), I look forward to this. And that fox is fucking adorable.

(and glad I'm no the only one who figured out the XYZ vs 3D bit)

Well it is about damn time it went to 3D. It didn't need 3DS technology for that, it could've accomplished that in Gen 4.

The new legenderies and starters all look pretty sweet =) I'll probably pick the Fire one, it looks cute. Here's to hoping it isn't another dual fighting type - if it is, I'd take Grass instead. And the deer legendary reminds me of Princess Mononoke so I'll go for it!

Aaand I guess this solves my dilemma of "Do I get a 3DS or not?". I've wanted one since KH 3D came out but not quite enough for ONLY that. This isn't solid enough reason on it's own either but TOGETHER - yeah I'll have to get one.

So, the Nintendo Direct just unveiled the new Generation 6 Pokemon games. Look to be set in a new Europe-esque region (after Gen5's America). It's a 3DS game and... well... Look at it.

Simultaneous world wide release this October. Dropping the 2D battle system. Looks like a big deal for the series.

Thought? Opinions?

I'm cautiously optimistic, and to me it certainly looks more interesting than Gen 4 or 5 did at this stage.

[EDIT]

And here are the new legendaries, along with which game they're likely to be in based on colour and shape, but B/W did it the other way around so who knows?

And here's the full 10 minute Nintendo Direct video announcement, though there's not much to it except emphasizing the world wide simultaneous release.
My thoughts? Neat, I love Cel Shading, looks like there could be character customisation too which I'd also enjoy, and a lot more exploration, possibly some legend of zelda elements to the dungeons and a bit of platforming, which is certainly nice.

The starters look meh too me, I quite like the grass one and I hope it's not as poor as Snivy was. I also really hope they get creative with type combinations, I do not want another Fire-Fighting type gamefreak! Nor do I want Grass-Ground for my starter ): Grass-Rock could be nice though?

Maybe have secondary types for the starters work like they did in Gen 4 as a kind of check to the starter it was weak too... maybe not rock actually for grass grass is defensively poor as it is...

Looks interesting, though I'm always hoping they shake up the starting pokemon paradigm. Fire/Water/Grass is old as dirt, there are other trifectas to use out there.

I think Grass/Rock would work OK as a starter, it would be interesting and weak to Bug, Steel, Fighting and Ice. So probably not great metagame-wise but they are certainly some of the lesser used attacks in the main game.

If they do the gen4 thing Grass/Dark Fire/Psycic and water/Fighting would work well, but that kind of defeats the point of the starters being an elemental triangle, it's to teach new players about weaknesses (and why you should level other pokémon too, if your rival can 1shot your starter)

I really like the graphical style too, gave me Colosseum flashbacks.
