There's no detail as to what exactly happened.
I mean, why did he leave? What happened? Etc.

We know the result is that two dogs were, tragically, sent to their deaths through agonizing heat, but what happened in the middle of it all?

A demotion and a fine, I think, would be fitting. Maybe add community service, probably not jail time. That's just what the court gives the person, what society does it up to them.

I love dogs and I honestly think that some animals are more civilized (in their own way) than humans. But we all have accidents, small and/or tragic.

*Read this with a 1950's American reporter's voice in your head*

"This just in... John Q. Public outraged at police officer's abuse of dogs. Public complaining that it is an extreme case of animal cruelty. Public then puts on fur-lined leather jacket and goes for a nice veal dinner."

In cases of animal abuse it never ceases to amaze me that outraged people never look in the mirror. (I did, which is why I'm a vegetarian)

Anyway, as for the officer: Suspension, community service (kinda what he was doing for a living, but now without pay), and pay back the cost of breeding/raising/training the dogs (the cost might be too excessive, so that may have to be altered). These punishments should be adjusted based on specifics that we don't have. eg. What were the rules surrounding leaving dogs unattended, rules about dogs in a private car, his past performance, etc.

At the end of the day, he made a mistake and no one was hurt. I'm a realist; dogs aren't people. Hell, if we were hungry enough, we would eat them.

so its ok to kill a creature that no one cares/will mourn. got you.

so that video of the 2 teens killing that homeless man is definately ok. because his death did not affect anyone and no one mourned him.

so you are saying people should kill homeless people to clean the streets and for sport, because no one cares about a homeless person with no family.

im glad we have that settled, now im going to go grab a knife and get to work.
Over-reacting much ?

You're comparing carelessness to premeditated murder ? really ?
oh you're absolutely right, here ill put him in my car on a hot day and wait till he's dead.

there we go. i woudlnt want it to be murder...

I don't know if you're misunderstanding this on purpose or what...

There's a difference between someone who's careless and does harm to someone/something, and someone who does harm to someone/something on *purpose*

Wow, people need to calm down and breathe a little, prison (keep in mind prison for a cop is 10x worse than prison for anyone else, except maybe child molesters)AND being fired AND a fine ?

Get real.

I'd say a fine + demotion and/or suspension without pay is enough, it's not like he was teasing the dogs and watching them die, everyone makes mistakes, even policemen.

If Joe anybody would leave his dog in his car and the dog died, there wouldn't even be a *mention* of prison time, why is it different for a cop ?
Here's the thing. If I killed a police dog that was attacking me I'd go to prison for killing a police officer. Why the hell is a cop who just killed two police officers not due to recieve the same punishment that I would recieve? That's just my two cents as to why this is different than a normal dog being locked up in a car.

If you are stupid enough to leave two living beings in a car on a hot day, when you know what will happen, I'm scared what you will do with a gun. He deserves to be fired.
UK police officers dont carry guns.
only the CO19's that drive around in the red cars

and that police officer should've known better, he should be permanently banned from the canine or any armed unit, maybe a long probationary period ... a fine that large and loss of job is too harsh
