I've tried subduing a hyper angry 9 year old before, they WILL hurt themselves pretty badly if you try holding them down, the pepper spray was easily the best thing they could have done, especially considering the fact he had a weapon.

Holy crap the kid is 8 and theses cops are grone men. All they had to do was walk up to the kid take the stick out of his hand and pick him up and walk out of there. You act like this kid is some kind of superhuman.

Wow, there's really no satisfying some people. People complained about kids getting shot, so they developed a number of non-lethal weapons designed to take people like this down without actually hurting them... And people still ***** about it. Fine then, we'll just shoot the next one in the head, maybe that would be a preferable solution. Oh wait, but that would be lethal, so we'll use a taser instead. Oh, but that's excessive, so we'll just beat him to death. Oh, but that would be lethal, so we'll just use pepper spray. Oh, but that's excessive, so... Dammed if you do, dammed if you don't.
I think just about everyone in this discussion has forgotten the state of public liability these days. Trust me, I work in a school, and I know how developed 8 year olds are. I know I could hold one down if it had to, and so could ANY of the staff here. But, in America, and many other developed countries, you lay a hand on him and something happens as a result, and suddenly it's "short-tempered teacher beats student! Parents press charges!" and the teacher becomes a target for the mob. It overshadows whatever the kid was doing, and the school's credibility goes out the window as the media overplays everything that the teacher did, even if it resulted in slight bruising. You also have to consider how easily kids bruise and hurt themselves, and what kind of position this puts the school in.
This is obviously a result of cases in the past where teachers have lost their cool and used excessive force in dealing with children, and where the call for corporal punishment has been made at times, to deal with unruly kids doing whatever the hell they want (shoplifting, abusing people anywhere in the street, vandalism) but it's a very fine line. Basically, here both the cops AND the school were scared to lay hands on him for fear of *guaranteed* public outrage, and did what they thought at the time would cause minimal harm, and despite the grief they caused the kid, he's recovered from it, as most people do.
This does NOT mean that:
- Police always use pepper spray or taser at the appropriate time (my friend was tasered last year while pinned down on the ground with his hands behind his back)
- Just talking him down and waiting for him to calm would be sufficient, because he needs to learn that there are *some* consequences for his actions. Coming from experience, I've been like that at times in my life, resulting in all kinds of shit from broken knuckles to big house repair costs

Justified the only other option they had was to tackle and disarm the child and people would be even more upset about that.

Really? Using chemical weapons that cause torment is less of an assault then simply grabbing someone? If that was my kid I would be pissed they did what they did instead of simply stopping them. Seriously? My first thought in reading this story is that the teachers are pussies for not being able to restrain a bitchy 8 year old. Maybe the teachers were particularly frail or something but come on, he's EIGHT! SIT ON HIM! As a summer camp counselor I had to deal with kids threatening people and each other with sticks and rocks on an almost daily basis. Same thing to the cops of course. Of course I don't know all of the details, but the bottom line seems like the kid has no discipline, probably the result of his father being absent.

while i still think taser are used waaaaaaaay to often this seems just fine to me, what boggles my mind is that the teachers could not stop a 8-year old before he got a long sharp object, isn't that their job in this kind of institution? since i wasn't there they not have had the opportunity or maybe they just didn't want the school to be sued for physically attacking a student down the line but still
For the people that say it was too much force for an 8 year old, look at the picture, that kid is big, and if he realy wants to kill, i mean, realy wants you dead, you are going to need to do what is necessary, pardon the play on words, but he wasn't playing with kid gloves.
