Ok, I heard on the news today about a school that was letting kids wear "Fall Harvest" costumes instead of Halloween costumes. If the kids wore Halloween costumes, their parents were called and had to change clothes. Here is what the radio station posted on its facebook.

Welcome to DarcyCountry! A school in Detroit says kids can participate Halloween, but it can't be called Halloween. Excerpt from memo sent to parents: "...in the interest of giving all the option to celebrate without offending, children are allowed to wear fall harvest costumes. Any costume deemed to be Halloween themed will be removed." Does the school have the right idea?

Now I don't see why kids had to be barred from wearing Halloween costumes. I guess its like not being able to say Merry Christmas anymore because it discriminates against people who don't celebrate it. I am starting to believe that the only way to not discriminate is to get RID of EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY, SPECIAL OCCASION, and MONTHLY CELEBRATIONS. That way no one gets special treatment and no one gets singled out. If people really want to get anal about not being able to say Merry Christmas or not celebrating Halloween, then I say take it ALL AWAY. What do you guys think?

Oh good. People wheeling out the PC bogeyman again.

Especially ridiculous when applied to the same schools that used to try and ban boys from having long hair. Yeah...Public education is soooo PC. that's why you can still beat up a gay guy for being gay or a black guy for being black in so many schools around the country.

Err...Sorry, let common sense get in the way for a minute.

ZOMG, THE SKY IS FALLING!

Merry f*#$&ing Christmas.

I still say christmas, I haven't changed anything and I have never had anyone get mad at me.

If we really want to be politically correct, we can't say Happy holidays either, because for some people it isn't a very happy time.

Political correctness is something that I personally think should work fine in moderation... I don't like people using the word "retard", for example, because I think it's pretty derogatory for people who are mentally challenged.

That having been said, if you're going to start suing people for using a modern colloquial term, then maybe you should reconsider what you're really getting angry at.

Regarding holidays, I think we can take a basic assumption and say that most people celebrate Christmas. So we say "Merry Christmas!" If they don't follow Christmas and instead Hanukkah, then we say, "Enjoy your holidays! More power to you!"

Getting angry at this sort of situation is juvenile at best and it depresses me to think that the world we live in, diverse at it is, is getting terrified for losing money because some idiot was "offended".

*Getting* out of hand? It's been out of hand for years. It's getting to the "beyond ridiculous" point these days. People can hardly say or do anything at all anymore without someone jumping up and screaming about how offensive it is, and for some idiotic reason, they're always the people that get sided with. It won't be long before holidays are in effect completely destroyed: Christmas with no Santa or nativity scenes for fear of offending muslims and hindus, halloween without monsters and ghosts and witches for fear of offending wiccans and christians and paranormal scientists, thanksgiving without turkey or, well, any food for offending the native americans, easter without chocolate bunnies for fear of offending rabbit breeders and chocolatiers, much less christians....

Hmm. Seems like religion is a common theme here. I'm offended by that, can we ban all that now?

See. Like I said. Beyond ridiculous.

You should see what they did to "Ba-ba Black Sheep".
Apparently they took out the black part.

Yes, they removed all traces of black from the song, because thats apparently less racist.

All political correctness is is a form of racism thats apparently OK to push. And it pisses me off.

I have a friend who celebrates Hanukkah, and we tell each other, "Happy Christmas!" and "Merry Hanukkah!" She laughs, I laugh, we're all good. When it comes to my public persona, I ask myself, "WWNDS?" (What would Neutral Dog Say?)

Q: "What's your opinion on the Israeli-Palestinian War/Conflict?"
NDA: "...everyone loves chicken. They should hold peace talks at a nice Tandoori Restaurant."

PC has been out of hand for years now. It's gotten to the point where you can't even make a passing comment without someone taking it out of context and blowing it out of proportion.

Fall Harvest?!? As the proud descendant of hunter-gatherers who were brutally oppressed by vicious majority agriculturalists, I am shocked and dismayed at this blatant display of bias by agrarian supremacists on the school board.

Every time the holidays rolls around, and one of my teachers says merry Christmas, I always say:

"Don't you mean happy holidays so no one gets offended?"

Of course I say it in a really sarcastic tone, I'm not that big of an idiot.

Almost every time they apologize and say they were out of line.

-_-

Well, that's easy to answer. Scream hard and long enough, and eventually people will get sick enough of it to just give you what you want. One of the biggest lessons we learn from our infancy; there's only so much screaming a human being can tolerate, and we can generate enough to go beyond that point.

TBH, with that particular song, I can kinda see it making sense, despite the song meaning to actually talk about a sheep. Just think of it in the context of a stereotype of a black person and their hair. Yeah. In that light, the song can be very racist. So in that case, I don't see too much of a problem removing "black" there.

The answer is that these people are sllorts.

They're the exact opposite of trolls. A troll is someone who deliberately offends people in order to start arguments. A sllort is someone who deliberately gets offended at things in order to start arguments.

While trolling is more common on the Internet, where people are likely to get angry and fly off the handle, sllorting is more common in the real world, where people are more likely to be diplomatic and try to appease.

Political-correctness based conflicts that don't involve overt or blatant discrimination are almost always the result of sllorting. Unfortunately, media coverage of such circumstances does nothing but feed the sllorts, which, much like with trolls, is a very bad thing to do.

But how many kids would realize that? Hell I never made the connection until they pointed it out.

And whats the stereotype with black people and heir? Never really understood that one.
