The Witcher.

I don't know what everyone else played, but I played a small, througoughly average action adventure game.
...that was released in 2007.
Really? The small print on my box says "copyright 2008."

Oooh, maybe that's just because I have the "Enhanced Edition."

Well then, in that case, Dead Space. Yes, it is a good shooter. But it's not the remarkable shooter everyone seems to be making it out to be.

and yet, I am remarking on it. Funny how that works.
Sorry to go off-topic. But are you serious? The Witcher is one of the, if not the best RPG i have played in a decade. The story is so deep you would probably drown without armbands and what you get for your money is brilliant.

Back to the topic, i voted MSG 4 but was nearly GTA 4.

I went with GTA4, tired of sandbox games. Besides has any of the GTA games done anything to distinguish themselves from each other?

I picked Brawl, mostly because I haven't played most of the others in the poll but also because it's the only game I played this year that disappointed me. Greatly.

BRAWL

Took the brilliant melee, dumbed down the move sets, dumbed down the levels, slowed the game down and altered the mechanics in a million subtle yet damaging ways. Certainly there is a lot more content, but the game doesn't play very well anymore.

Nice work Nintendo, you managed to break the greatest fighting game ever.
A-fucking-men.

...okay, that sounded wrong. I agree though, Melee is the pinnacle of the series, I still can't stop playing it. On the other hand, I got tired of Brawl's bullshit after only a few days.

Dead Space: such a hotch-potch of other people's better-implemented ideas I'm surprised it didn't implode from the pressure of a billion lawsuits.

GTA4... rockstar went from one of the best games of all time, san andreas, then cut a large amount of the fun out of it and broke sand box game play by inserting shit loads of pointless side mission....

I had to go with Brawl. It was too much like its predecessors, which is coming a bit too much of a habit for Nintendo. :/

I think GTAIV was maybe overhyped, but I wasn't disappointed in the slightest by it. I didn't miss anything it dropped from GTASA apart from maybe the land scale, but I was completely sucked in by the story line (and if you whinge about people constantly calling you, you obviously haven't noticed the ability to turn calls/texts off).

Wheres Gears of War 2?
Next to Resistance 2. Stop trolling.
How is this trolling? It's a legitimate question. The campaign, don't get me wrong, was pretty good, but the multiplayer is BROKEN. Part (most) of what made Gears good was its multiplayer, but Gears 2 just doesn't have that going for it. For something that was so hyped, it turned out to be frankly disappointing.

Good Question. But if this poll had to do with games that had too much marketing, I would've called it the overhyped game poll. Hype comes from marketing; ratings come from critics.

I'll use No More Heroes as an example. It was an poorly made crappy game that wasn't hyped up by the marketing but holds a lot of appeal to geeks & otaku. Thus it was given a much higher rating than it deserved by a vast majority of critics, who are geeks and otaku.

I don't mind that the critics enjoyed the game on a personal level but many of them weren't able to separate their personal enjoyment from the objective facts we want to know regarding the game software like weather it was rich or shallow. Oftentimes this leads to very badly made games getting high ratings and tedious minigames getting thumbs up.

You don't get the same thing in movies because the majority of movie critics aren't the kind of guys who like Police Academy movies.
For the most part, the large game review sites seem to be biased towards whoever is paying their bills that day. There are few outlets that give an honest review, most having inflated scores to keep the advertising dollars rolling in. Ratings and hype go hand in hand in this industry.

The obscurish games I can see the point of, if I'm recommended something that I've never heard of and hate it, I have a measure of resentment towards the arsesnipe who recommended it. But No More Heroes aside, the poll is made up of big name games that had big name marketing behind them, so were destined to get big name review scores, no matter how batshit boring they really are.

Okay, I'm actually going to have to agree with you on this, but you do have to understand that Indigo just mentioned it because it's exclusive to the 360. That's all I'm saying, I do admit that it was a bit disappointing, though it's far from being the most overrated game of the year.
