Even though someone didn't put it on the poll, Skyrim. Unless Bethesda somehow fucks it up, I think that it's going to be of Red Dead quality, or even better.

Still, it's up against some stiff competition, and I could see the reward going to LA Noire or Mass Effect 3 as well.

I'd like The Last Guardian to be a contender, but I don't think that it will be.

The best game I've played thus far this year is Portal 2, hands-down. I'm greatly looking forward to Arkham City and Skyrim, though, so we'll see if they can unseat it.

In my opinion, the GOTY nominees this year will, from most publications, be pulled from the group of:
Portal 2
Batman: Arkham City
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
L.A. Noire
with honorable mentions given out to inFamous 2 and Battlefield 3.
(Note: The ONLY reason that Mass Effect 3 isn't on that list is that I am of the firm belief that it's only a matter of time before it is delayed until 2012. Bioware is already releasing two major games in 2011, Dragon Age 2 and The Old Republic, so I honestly don't think they can put those out, support them, and still get the massive, epic conclusion to the trilogy they've been working on and building up out in the same year. The Last Guardian and Mass Effect 3 both look like potential GOTY contenders, but the former has already been delayed, and I'm sure that any day we'll be seeing that the latter will be delayed as well.)

Right now, I'd say DA2 but I haven't played many games this year.

However, I'm guessing it's going to be Skyrim for me.
It just looks so amazing ^_^

Well, GoTY nominations tend to be bought not earned so it's hard to say.

2011 was supposed to be a huge year for Blockbuster games, and EA in paticular has been flooding the market. It hasn't turned out that way though, and truthfully a lot of these blockbusters seem to be fizzling down to pretty run of the mill successes, if that (sales aside). "Dragon Age 2" was badly received, and despite the fanboyism I honestly do not think that "Portal 2" has had rating difficulties simply due to Day1 DLC, largely because even when it's inspire anger it hasn't lead to that kind of reaction.
Portal didn't have day 1 dlc; it had a day 1 hat shop. The only reason the score is below a 9 on metacritic is because /v/ bombed the score on day one.

Just setting the record straight.

OT: I imagine Portal 2 will be GOTY. It's probably going to be mine, anyway.
Actually that's incorrect. /v/ has been around a long time, and doesn't have that kind of power. This is a point a lot of people are missing. The only thing that is going to have a visible influance on ratings is a lot of dissatisfied customers. I understand a lot of people are in denial about this, but it's not really a point that can be argued. Yes, the rating went back up, but that could simply be a more successful attempt at damage control than what Bioware did. Any way it goes, your still dealing with a situation where the rating is less than perfect, and definatly not GoTY caliber.

It's fine by me if you like the game, and really I'm not hating on it (which a lot of people seem to think) I'm simply commenting on how so many people seem to be in denial about it, and being realistic in my "calls" on what is likely to get game of the year. I honestly do not think it's likely to be "Portal 2" even if a lot of people really like the game. But then again I don't think any of the games released so far this year have been blockbusters on the nessicary level, so it's not like I'm selectively picking on "Portal 2".
Including cosmetic hats is not grounds for dismissal as a GOTY contender. The only reason P2 has such low ratings on metacritic is because people freaked out over hats. That do nothing. That aren't necessary to enjoy the game. I'm not sure how I'm in denial about anything because I don't see a cosmetic hat shop as the end of the world. Pardon me for taking, "lol portal 2 too short = 0 / 10" "OHEMGEE DAY 1 "DLC" 0 / 10" reviews with a grain of salt. Which is what almost every negative review on metacritc was, last I checked.

Also, Portal 2 doesn't have much competition this year, IMO. I mean, Oblivion was fun, but the quality is a lot lower than Portal 1 and or 2. I doubt Skyrim will be much of a leap forward in quality, if Fallout is any indication. Mass Effect 3? People hate large numbers.
Actually the issue as I've read it is that there are alternate costumes availible for Chell that can be purchused for an additional fee. This is very similar to Capcom selling alternative costumes for characters in games like Street Fighter. I get that you think it's no big deal, but a lot of people do think that this kind of thing is ruining gaming for a number of reasons. To the way of thinking of many people it's the trivial nature of the DLC that annoys people as much as anything.

I mean it's fine to say you disagree with people, but to say that they have no right to rate a game based on something like this that pissed them off is wrong, the whole point is to try and send a message to the company(s) doing it. That said, I don't think that this alone was the sole reason for complaints.

See, the thing is that if your a fanboy, and really like "Portal 2" then obviously your going to disagree with anyone who has any complaint, no matter what aspect of things it's over. That right there is part of the problem, and what makes this kind of thing so nasty, especially when your looking at a divide substantial enough to lower the ratings of a very popular game in a noticible way.

As far as Bethesda's CRPGs go, it all depends on what you like. Differant kind of game from FPS games or puzzlers. While my reasoning is differant from yours, as I explained I suspect you might be right about "Skyrim" not faring well in the ratings. How it will stack up against "Portal 2" remains to be seen. Bethesda has been gradually dumbing down Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall, and each time people have been complaining. "Oblivion" was pretty basic, and they apparently managed to find ways to make "Skyrim" even more dumbed down by all reports. The game type doesn't seem to be your style, but honestly I think the guys this game is largely supposed to be aimed at might wind up being unhappy with the results. Only time will tell as far as that goes though... right now all we can really say about the game is that it looks even prettier than other games in the series.

Generally speaking we're only going to really have a shoe in for game of the year if something comes along that gets a "10" rating from multiple major reviewers and close to that from the user base. That game has yet to come along yet this year, and as such it's up in the air.

You can only buy hats, gestures, and skins for the bots. Which are completely optional. Some of which can be unlocked through achievements and playing the game. The skins/hats are only visible to you when gesturing.

I could understand someone knocking off a few points because of this, but giving the game a 0/10 because of such a pointless thing is obviously trolling. The only "message" you're sending VALVe is that you're an entitled twat who can't find a serious reason to dislike a game and that you can't be arsed to write a serious review. Also, a lot of these 0/10 reviews appeared mere hours after Portal 2 unlocked. I highly doubt they played through it in under an hour or two.

The only complaint that I have seen that is valid is the length. If you rush through single player, ignore dialogue, and then skip co-op I'm sure you could finish "the game" in 3 - 5 hours. However, if you play through and listen to all of the dialogue and look for Easter eggs, single player itself takes 6 - 8 hours. Then there's co-op, which took my friend and I around 6 hours. Out of my 24 friends who own Portal 2 not one of them has complained about it being too short.

I'll concede legitimate points, such as length if you're not into co-op. But people have to make them.

I'm hoping all the games on that list are going to be great, but if I had to pick one, I'd go Skyrim ( I choose other), since I'm really into open world Bethesda Games Lately, and think they could pull it off.

Hmmm.
I need to play more of the new games out this year. Been playing more and more retro games I've noticed.

I'll take a guess at Skyrim.
Because it's Elder scrolls, lets face it, every one of them is a landmark in gaming.
And I don't know what it is, but I have a good feeling about Skyrim, it feels like they understand the balance of gameplay elements better after Oblivion.
And potential console mods!? Sign me up.

Though, I haven't played Portal 2 yet, and that seems to be doing very well.
Valve didn't give away much in the advertising, so I'll need to try it and see.

And of course, there is Mass Effect 3...Bioware's chance to redeem themselves before their Star Wars MMORPG comes out. Could be something special if they live up to the build up.
Still...another short development cycle, just like DA2. Could we have another disaster?

BUT.
I hope it's an upset and something new comes out to surprise us all.
It's always good to see new IPs and Indie devs do well.

I wanna say Brink, basically just cause it looks like Call of Duty and Mirror's Edge had a child that was blessed by the crack fairy.

...ButprobablyDeadSpace2.

For me, I have little doubt that BF3 is gonna be my GOTY. I still have a hard time believing that there is going to be a BF3 after 6 years.

The only thing that would keep it from being my GOTY is an E3 reveal that Final Fantasy Versus 13 was actually an elaborate cover for Kingdom Hearts 3. I can dream.

Ok I know it's very early to be asking this but I was curious to what you guys/girls think... What game do you think will take the prize home for this year? Personally I'm thinking either Portal 2 or if it's released in time Minecraft. Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 could potentially change my mind though.

Also making the poll I realized how many sequels are in the list... Is this good or bad for the industry?

EDIT: Sorry I forgot about Skyrim :S
Brink. I think. Not sure, it is way too early to tell.

I'd be tipping Minecraft for back to back GOTY since it already won GOTY in 2010 except having the same game eligible two years in a row isn't really fair. However it is still the only game on that list without a number in its title, so I'll give it another nod in the poll. Otherwise, maybe RAGE or Brink.

If Minecraft wins I will shit bricks. The fact the Mojang won March Mayhem for making one game, which is still in beta, is completely ridiculous.

ARKHAM CITY.

Battlefield 3 I expect to carry the torch from Bad Company 2 as my favourite online game. Mass Effect 3 I expect to be among the greatest single player experiences ever. NBA 2K12 should improve even further on the best sports game known to man. And Portal 2 was everything I hoped it would be.

Seriously though, Arkham City. I want that game with my pants.

This is going to be a tough year for everyone. A lot of very good games coming out. Of the ones out right now I'd say Portal 2 trumps them all. Still waiting for Brink, Witcher 2, Dungeon Siege 3, the new Deus Ex and all the rest.
