God, this again. I thought we were finally done with all the threads where everyone agrees that 2012 is a load of bullshit and chips and acts like they're being edgy by saying it. I was really hoping we wouldn't have to see another one.

So yes, it's hogwash. But, has any of us actually ever met someone who believes it? I haven't. This debate keeps getting brought up by people who already think the debate is a moot point. There's like three crazy guys in a basement with tinfoil hats somewhere that believe the 2012 stuff, and they're the only people who believe it. Other than that, it's just hollywood and other people who write fiction doing what people who write fiction have been doing for a long time, 'borrowing' concepts from ancient mythologies no one believes any more since they're now the free idea bucket, and having a little bit of fun with it.

How many more threads will I be forced to see about this?
What -I- don't understand is why people who are so adamantly against certain re-occurring threads go out of their way to post in them, hiking up the post count and increasing it's ranking. It's like the reverse of trolling.

OT: No, the world's end doesn't have a date on a(ny) calender yet.

IMO, we have the power to schedule and control our lives to a very limited degree, so the "End of the World" debates are just a bigger, bad-ass-er version of every other (speaking from a completely non-secular PoV)inconsequential date on the calender that we've attached some kind of sentimental or personal significance to. Aside from the issue of "security" in knowing exactly when the world is going to die (or more specifically, when YOU are going to die) there's also the question of curiosity. I'd be curious to see the world end, I just probably wouldn't want to survive it.

sure it's real; 2010, 2011, 2012. It's right there. Conspiracy theory methinks. And also the end of the world crap isn't real as well.

Well, obviously, we won't know till the actual year, 2012 happens, now will we?

But I think this apocalypse theory is a bunch of bullshit.

Why does "2012" now supersede itself as an apocalyptic end rather than a year? The year is real, even if that itself is relative. Anyways, the period of time we call a year that has been labelled as the 2012th year of the Common Era is quite likely going to happen.

Wow, I just noticed, I did add a poll. It didn't show for some reason, sorry.
Keeps happening to me. Topics say "Poll" at the beginning but have none. The OP of these threads itself has nothing to do with a poll-type question in it, so I end up becoming thoroughly befuddled.

I remember seeing a chart on why 2012 is BS, if anyone has it I'll trade you a cookie...

But I think that the theory holds no water...

The Mayans couldn't even predict that they'd get wiped out by the Spanish, I highly doubt they could predict the end of the world. Besides, they've probably have noted something like "everyone dies here", rather than just ending the calendar.

You, sir, win the "smart guy" award. If they thought the world would end, why didn't they just write that the world would end?

I doubt anything of consequence is going to happen, but personally, I kinda hope the world does end. Maybe I'm just being cynical, but it sometimes feels like the amount of stupidity, cruelty and just plain old evil in human society has reached a fever pitch. Seriously, the Gulf is completely destroyed by BP, radio and TV hosts accuse the president of being a Socialist Nazi Commie Devil and openly encourage armed rebellion, the University has gone from institute of learning to a training program for underpaid wage slaves, and worst of all, the average citizen doesn't seem to care about any of this because he's too busy watching TV and eating McDonald's to notice. Don't even get me started on the bizarre sense of entitlement and unwarranted self-importance most people under the age of 25 seem to suffering from these days.

End of the world? Bring it on. Time to start fresh.

We have more quality TV, movies, books, food, and music than ever. The world has never been better.
