Well, of course the YEAR is real, I mean it's part of a basic numerical system that we use to measure years. 12 comes after 11, so-Oh, people have already made that joke.

Well, let's ask Dr. Punchy Wright.

Thanks for that, Punchy.

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter. Think about it.
If 2012 IS indeed the end of the world, there is nothing we can do about it, so there is no sense worrying about it.
If 2012 isn't the end of the world, then there is nothing to worry about in the first place.

So either way, there is no reason to worry.

No, I don't think the world will end in 2012, and neither did the Mayans. It was just the restart point for the long count calendar.

2012 will be just like 2000. Another boring, uneventful year.

But that's not going to stop all the pretentious doomsday prophets from going "Oops, uh, no, turns out doomsday will be in the year 2666!" and declare everyone who calls them out on their bullshit sinners and plug their ears while loudly spouting Bible verses.

It just marks the end of the longest cycle of the Mayan calendar. If they were still around, they would just start a new cycle after the fact.

In my lifetime the worlds supposed to have "ended" three times. They were wrong then, they'll be wrong in 2012. Plus say it does end in 2012. What do the people who were saying it'll end there get? They'll be just as dead as the rest of us

Of course it's real, I mean doesn't the world end every time the Gregorian calendar turns over? I mean December 31 2009 was a real ***** to clean up when the world blew up, am I right?

anyone who researches this find out the mayans both said change rather then end of the world and would know they have one month less then us so the actual 2012 was about a hundred or so years ago

The movie was simply awful. Too bad that was real.

As for the theory, we'll have to see.

IMO: I don't think it's an 'end of the world' thing, but something different.

If I remember right 12/21/2012 was just the end of the Great Cycle. It's basically just the new Y2K. All the destruction and panic theories are just nonsense for the media to profit off of that weak minded individuals cling to.
this. it doesnt mean anything specific to dooms day or the end of the world, its just a bunch of overhyped media by modern day paranioa freaks

I actually read an article where they interviewed a researcher specializing in Mayan culture and history and he said he had no idea where the apocalypse idea had come from.
the point being, if you're stupid enough to think the worlds going to end, at least believe the expert.

It is time we put an end to this!

For me, it's pure rubbish. I think it Mayans were like:

"Dude, you're still carving that calendar?"
"Yeah, man, I'm down to 2012, almost done"
"Oh, quit it already, either ways, our space-ship is ready, leave it"
"Fine."
Apparently they counted down from 2012 or something.

Why would you care?

to paraphrase moviebob "the mayans didnt have shit to say about the end of the world"

the mayan calender is based on the movement of the earth around the galaxy. when the calender runs out the earth will have moved to the galactic equator. the calender does not "stop" technically, it resets.
