It is time we put an end to this!

For me, it's pure rubbish. I think it Mayans were like:

"Dude, you're still carving that calendar?"
"Yeah, man, I'm down to 2012, almost done"
"Oh, quit it already, either ways, our space-ship is ready, leave it"
"Fine."
I strongly disagree here, there must've been a reason imo. Whether it's because the world ends, or because that timeframe will begin to repeat itself at that point, who really knows? What IS known, however, is that the Mayan's put together a calendar so accurate, that not many have been able to replicate it to that degree without more aggressive technology.

The thing predicts lunar and solar eclipses accurately, after all.
who knows? lots of people know! anyone who understands the system on which the calender is based knows why the calendar runs out.

The world could end in 2012, just like it could end any other time.
Personally I think it'll end in 2013 just to mess with us =P

Fake, always was fake always will be fake.

I just look forward to watching the riots in the streets while I sit on my beanbag laughing!
And that's how the world in fact will end at 2012. Oh, the sweet delicious irony!

Y2K did happen, just nowhere near as extreme as they said it would. It created trivial program errors on really old machines, nothing more, nothing that wasn't fixed quickly.

My theory is that the mayan civilization, which was destroyed sometime ago, were destroyed in the middle of making the calendar. People are just blowing that out of proportion.

The people who think that 2012 is the end of the world are nuts. It was the end of the calender cycle for the Mayans; the calender would have started over.

The Solar flare that is supposed to kill us in 2012 is actually coming in 2013... LOL.
anyway it probably won't kill us, just knock out the power and cause some traffic and weather issues.
Technically, it won't kill us. It will however mess with technology so unless we adequately prepare for it we might just have 3 days of complete and utter chaos. Still, we don't "know" what will happen because we cannot predict solar flares. What we can predict is when the solar activity will peak aka when the highest chance of a solar flare occurring is. Still, this is no excuse for having another Katrina.

Is 2012 real?

Of course it's real. It's not like we're going to jump from 2011 to 2013!

...

Ooooh, you mean the end of the world theory!

No, it's fake
You damn thought-stealing ninja. I was just about to say almost the exact same thing. But now I'm unable to do so, because of you! Curses!

OT: The year is real. That whole crackpot theory that is associated with the year is BS, though.

Predictions of the end of the world have been failing to come true for centuries. From the biblical prophecy that the end would come during the lifetime of that generation to Great Disappointment [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Disappointment], a reinterpretation of the biblical prophecy since it had failed already, someone figured they could squeeze a few extra dollars out of it.

There have likely been hundreds if not thousands of such prophecies and so far the only thing they all have in common is failure.

2012 is likely to have a similar pedigree especially considering that there is no prophecy to accompany the ending of the Mayan calendar. It just kind of stops. Morons then took this to mean something because morons can, will, and do find meaning in meaningless things.

It's just another Y2K, the world will not end. It cannot, since that year I will be turning 18! I shall not let it ruin my fun!

Also, for giggles:

they stopped making calenders because they looked at how many they had and said to themselves
"What the hell are we doing"
its in my personal book of history
