Technically, it won't kill us. It will however mess with technology so unless we adequately prepare for it we might just have 3 days of complete and utter chaos. Still, we don't "know" what will happen because we cannot predict solar flares. What we can predict is when the solar activity will peak aka when the highest chance of a solar flare occurring is. Predictions of the end of the world have been failing to come true for centuries. From the biblical prophecy that the end would come during the lifetime of that generation to Great Disappointment [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Disappointment], a reinterpretation of the biblical prophecy since it had failed already, someone figured they could squeeze a few extra dollars out of it.
There have likely been hundreds if not thousands of such prophecies and so far the only thing they all have in common is failure.
2012 is likely to have a similar pedigree especially considering that there is no prophecy to accompany the ending of the Mayan calendar. It just kind of stops. Morons then took this to mean something because morons can, will, and do find meaning in meaningless things.
