...to all the people who say that the maya calender just runs out of days because they didn't bother to make more.

well actually, they did predict the end of the world at that point. it was a part of their mythology that the current world will end when the skies are filled with fire (most people think that this is supposed to be an asteroid impact), and a new one will be created somehow.

that said, i don't believe in the prophecy either. i just know about it.

Many people think that on December 21, 2012 everything will change. What will change is debatable however and i figured id ask you all. People using Mayan prophecy believe it will be the end of the world, or possibly a rebirth of sorts, and they have a pretty good record on calling things or so iv heard. One of my friends called alien invasion and was serious but i have no idea what he thinks half the time. Others believe nothing will happen. So I'm not sure where i stand on this but maybe some of you can enlighten me.
Isn't it December 20, 2012? To me at least it makes more sense. 12 20 - 20 12. I really have no idea though, it's just that it seems to make more sense to me^^

Ooh. I shall be happily awaiting you with a shotgun, sir.
Hmmmm, I just find it hilarious that the guy got permabanned after just one day here :)

Anyway, back to the topic. I don't think anything special will happen, since the Mayans only had their calender end at 2012 because they counted backwards. I don't know why that is, I do Maths, not History. However, they didn't necessarily think anything bad would happen then. It was simply their style of calender. If it was meant to mark anything special it would most likely have been relating to them anyway, which proves they didn't know what they were talking about because they disappeared after the Spanish went to the 'New World'.

The last of the descendants of the Mayan religion will be no more. See their sacred and royal heritage continued being passed down throughout the years, long after the fall of their civilisation. Whether small colonies of worshipers escaped the accursed white demons by fleeing south, into the unexplored depths of the Amazon, or they managed to intermingle with modern society, attending their ritual sacrifices in secret.
And soon, the last of the Mayans will perish, they will pass into the realm of spirits and become more powerful than we could possibly imagine.

no, it's supposed to be either 21st or 23rd, depending on how you calculate it from the older calendar.

most people forget that it might be the 23rd though...

The only thing that shall change is that there'll be less threads like this one.

A most terrible and fearful day will befall us all.
The streets will run red with the blood of thousands of victims.
people from every corner of the globe will feel the harsh sting of defeat.
millions will cry, weep, some will even laugh.
At the end of it, we will be left with nothing.

I am, of course, refering to the London Olympics.

London 2012 will be the death of us all!

I just don't know. I hope its a rebirth of the earth.

Without the humans.

(Yes, I realize I would be dead, but for the better of the earth)
(I also realize that the next dominant race would probably do the same thing, but that would be billions of years. So the earth may recover/adapt)
This is an unusual opinion. Since when is a hunk of rock more important than the human race? There are billions of planets out there, but how many of them sustain intelligent life? It seems like this opinion hasn't been thought though at all.

As for this mayan thing, I don't think they actually predicted this as the end of the world, I think they just ran out of numbers to count to.
If you look at the darkest point in the night sky, with a high-tech telescope and zoom a while, you will see thousands of lights. No they are not stars, they are galaxies.

There are more planets than all the deserts have sand particles, there obviously are lot of planets that have intelligent life dwelling on them.
It would be odd to think that we are something unique.
Whether we are alone in the universe is a whole different argument, yet I am in agreeance with you. However, why would the 'puriy' of the Earth be more important than an intelligent species. As you said "more planets than sand particles" so why would the loss of the human race make the world better.

Oh no... Not another apocalypse! It'll be just like the end of technology in the Year 2000!

I'm fairly sure that nothing will happen on December 21st, 2012.
