First person just feels right to me. It's wierd when you follow along 10 feet behind a guy and then when you press shoot, something comes out of his weapon. I actually tried to shoot my own avatar once. I had been playing nothing but FPS's for several months, and when I popped in Star Wars Battlefront 2 to blow off some steam, my avatar looked suspiciously like the baddies I was used to disemboweling.

I liked Rainbow Six Vegas style perspective, where it's 1st person, unless you're taking cover, or stacking up on a wall.
That's how it is in 007 QoS

I wouldn't say first person is more immersive, why can't I turn my head?
Good point.

I like FPSs more if you can actually see you limbs when you look down. Third person shooters are fun, but usually only if it's an over-the-shoulder perspective.

It doesn't really matter to me, though an actual 2nd person shooter would be quite a feat if done properly.

Personally I find it harder to conect with a charecter in a game if I can't see them and I am firmly in the camp that thinks games are as much about atmosphere and good story telling as they are dicking about, it is very similiar to watching a movie for me except i'm in control of the leading guy/girl

there are some great fps out there, but i still lean to third person, you gotta play the good tps where the bodies dont take up the screen, as while playing fps it feels like im constantly in a sniper scope runnign around with tunnel vision, which on games that allow it going back and looking at matches online i feel like a complete retard and so do other people as half the time you run RIGHT by someone because of your "lack of peripherals" (if thats how you spell that word)

not dissing on fps, just saying there are flaws to it and a good tps i prefer, such as socom 1 & 2, and if you are a real online shooter gamer, you have played those games and you know what im talking about.

So with Gears of war and Resident Evil V third person shooters have become more valid competition for first person shooters, which of the two do you prefer?
I LOVE Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil 5.

I HATE Halo.

Ironically, I like first person more than third person. Which proves that third/first person isn't as important to me as other game mechanics.

I think you should be able to switch between the two at will, and unlike Fallout 3(which I also love), both should be well done.

The incredible Hulk, the enitre Oddworld thing except for Strangers Wrath, and the recently released Batman: Arkham Asylum count, since they are games where you never shoot anyone else, and everyone else just shoots at you.

A 2nd person Shooter would logically be a game where everyone else is constantly shooting you.

I disagree.

1st person: it's me, the game is from my point of view, from my eyes.
3rd person: it's not me, it's not you, it's a third person viewing the guy I play as.
2nd person: that is you, the guy that I am talking to or acting towards, in this case, the guy that I'm shooting. So the game would have to be viewed from the eyes of the victim of the character I control...

oh btw with my post earlier,

tps your able to see your guy and if hes close to an edge or when he actually needs to jump and where is he jumping to, while in fps you can end up looking like a complete noob stuck on a stubbly rock running around a corner or such as you can't see yourself

fps is okay, but i still get just as "immersive" in tps if you play the good games. such as gears and what not.

It really depends on the game. For games like Gears of War where the characters speak independently of the player and have distinct personality traits, I'd go with third person. In games like Half Life where your character is essentially whatever you personally project on to them, first person works better.
