A second person shooter would be something where you dont have direct control over your characters but still make them do all the shooter essentials. I found a good example of this is 'Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten hammers' Where you don't actually kill the enemy, but your character does, you just tell him what to do even though it is all set up like a normal shooter. Play it to get what i mean, it was a cheap game (only $4AU!).

I don't care really, if it works i am ok with it. So i will stick to the fence sitting option.

Depends on the game. Shooters aren't really my thing usually, but a few of them work much better in 3rd person, while others work better in 1st. Jumping is better with 3rd, aiming better with 1st.

i like games devoted to either 3rd or 1st person but i'm not a big fan of switching between the two. i like both 3rd and 1st person games but i think they should be approached differently in how they are made.

I'd love to see a second person shooter. You control the main character, but your perspective is from each enemy you're about to kill.

And i can't believe how few people chose "i don't like shooters." The best shooter I've ever played is Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction. Why? because it's not up it's own ass trying to be intense and visceral and violent. Epic Games, as a company, is one of the worst things to happen to the games industry.
While you're perfectly entitled to your own opinion of Epic Games, don't forget that they made the Unreal Engine, which has been one of the best things to happen for the games industry. The list of games that use it is ridiculously long, and in that list are some of the best games of the decade. Also, is Epic the only game company that ever made a violent game? If that's what we're going on, there's another hundred game developers you should hate. :p

In the later games, they had particle physics to the visor which make it unbelievably sexy. Like, if you look up during a rainstorm, you can see the little water droplets on your screen.
Actually they had it since the first Prime.

I don't mind, to be honest, since I can enjoy both third- and first-person shooters equally.

If push came to shove, I suppose I'd go third, but only just.

that's your opinion, but i personally like games that are intense and immersive, plus i'm kind of sadistic when it comes to gore lol

So with Gears of war and Resident Evil V third person shooters have become more valid competition for first person shooters, which of the two do you prefer?
I'm happy to play either of them and i like them both equally.

you call the Unreal engine one of the best things to happen for the industry, i call it a cop-out. Now instead of giving their games a distinct look and feel, devs can just plug it all into the same engine 50 other development houses are using. I hate the look of games that run on the Unreal engine. I think Yahtzee himself said it makes everything look like it's made out of modeling clay. The Unreal engine is almost as overused as World War II.

And I don't hate Epic Games for making violent games. i hate them because all they make is violent games. Not just violent, but mindlessly so to boot. Could someone tell me the plot of the Unreal series? I played a bunch of the early ones and I've got to tell you, I had no idea why I was shooting the other giant-shouldered men with huge not-compensating-for-anything-i-swear weapons. And Gear of War? those games play like a made-for-Spike-TV-movie. If you're into violence for violence's sake, then god bless you. But I need something more to be entertained.

i think it dosent matter to much because most of the games that are in third person wouldnt really work on the first person view because for example gears the covers systerm i dont thing would work if u was looking through first person because the third lets u look from abit further a distence so its easyer to look for more cover and move inbetween it.

so i think it depends on the game but if the game is sutible to go either way i do normally prefer 1st person because it gives u a better view to aim i think. =]

Depends on the game and platform. Consoles are for third person, pcs for first person. Games like dead space and Resident evil would be horrible in first person, but then so would half life and portal be horrible as third person.

"Second person shooter" doesn't make any sense. "Second person" is a literary term that doesn't translate to gaming. In fact "third person shooter" isn't even correct, the game is still "told" from a first person perspective, it's just that the camera isn't inside their head.

Here is a list of games that utilize some type of the Unreal Engine:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games

Now that's a bloody lot of games there, and if you can say with a straight face that every one of those games looks exactly the same, and that none of those games have any innovation or are copouts I'd have to call you a liar. Considering that games cost a ton of money to make, laying fault on a developer for using such an engine as Unreal instead of programming their own just seems silly. I'm no expert, but I can see that if something is good, and can be modified to meet your needs, why not use it? If you didn't click the link, here's just a few radically different games that use Unreal Engine technology: Bioshock, Mirror's Edge, Splinter Cell, Batman Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect, Mortal Combat vs. DC Universe, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Endwar, and Red Steel 2. So that's an award winning Art Deco styled FPS, a stylized platformer, a tactical stealth game, an upcoming Batman beat em up/superhero action game, an award winning Sci Fi RPG, a fighting game, a squad based WW2 FPS, a voice operated RTS, and a highly stylized Wii game. Somehow, I'm pretty sure those games look nothing alike, and play nearly nothing alike. Oh, and at least a few have highly original stories and are a little bit deeper than just violence for violence's sake. But if you hate every one of those games on the full list well God-bless you. :p
(Oh and isn't Yahtzee the one who also says that graphics don't determine a game's quality?)

Okay, so all Epic makes are violent games. Is there no other development house that makes only violent games? I mean we're talking about videogames here like 99% of videogames are violent and more so than not have forgettable stories that have no real effect on gameplay. Who cares why you're shooting giant armor wearing men? Does it matter? Or is it just fun? You can have those games too, not every one has to be an epic story of redemption and loss and retribution and love and finding the princess. What's more? There are plenty of development houses that just make violent games. How about Volition? They created a GTA ripoff with Saint's Row, which is nothing but violence and murdering prostitutes. There are plenty of other game developers that do the exact same thing. There are very few that step outside the box to do something innovative and different. Oh and a lot of times those that do utilize a form of the Unreal Engine.

I don't know, I'm decidedly neutral about Epic, I just think it's silly to hate one game company because they make violent games. When nearly every other company is doing the exact same thing. Yet the company you hate has also developed a top of the line engine that facilitates the making of a long list of incredibly diverse games.

In regards to the title, what would be a second person shooter? Playing as somebody, but seeing it from another characters eyes? That would be awesome.

Depends really. FPS is very immersive, but TPS is fun with mad gameplay. I'm beta-testing a UT3 mod on the PS3 called Gearscam, where you can switch between 1st and 3rd person on the fly, very fun.

EDIT: Playing Star Wars: Battlefront on the PS2, I also set the controls so that I could switch form 1st to 3rd on the fly (incidentally, the same button as on Gearscam)

Tell me you just spent all this time researching and typing that up just to prove me wrong. Sure, I'll give you the argument, you've earned that. But somehow I still feel like you've lost here. I'm going outside for a while before I go off to work. Enjoy the satisfaction of out-arguing some anonymous person over the internet.
