I think, if I had to choose, I'd go with 3rd person.
1st person offers a full range of front vision, but not being able to see to my sides makes me really nervous. Not to mention I actually
like seeing my character's model, and I like being able to interpret what it is that I'm doing.

I actually just finished that game yesterday. I'm not sure what my opinion is about the first-person perspective.
On the one hand, I had trouble seeing what I was doing, especially when jumping for certain platforms and seeing whether I'm jumping around or actually side-dodging, in addition to not being able to see Samus' armor outside of cutscenes. On the other hand, the weapon effects were great viewed from that perspective (that game made me feel more immersed in fighting than in any FPS), I don't think I could see the visors working in third-person, and first-person grapple beam swinging was extremely fun.
