There are pros and cons to both.

FPS:
Pros;
-eaisier aiming, usually
-more emersive
-always looking where your going

Cons;
-no periphial vision
-charicter doesn't always respond well to the environment
-lack of realistic cover or moves i.e. rolling, blind fire

Third Person Shooter:
Pros;
-wider range of vision
-can look to the side without turning (in most), in case you still need to shoot but want to look for enemys
-reacts better to the environment
-more realistinc movements i.e. rolling, diving behind cover, blind firing

Cons;
-somewhat harder aiming (I personaly find it just as easy)
-less emersive to some
-camera may get off track on some of the "not as good" games
this is a good way to put it and show
i find first person a lot harder to aim (But thats me im bad at aiming)

I think, if I had to choose, I'd go with 3rd person.

1st person offers a full range of front vision, but not being able to see to my sides makes me really nervous. Not to mention I actually like seeing my character's model, and I like being able to interpret what it is that I'm doing.

First person. Blame Metroid Prime.
I actually just finished that game yesterday. I'm not sure what my opinion is about the first-person perspective.

On the one hand, I had trouble seeing what I was doing, especially when jumping for certain platforms and seeing whether I'm jumping around or actually side-dodging, in addition to not being able to see Samus' armor outside of cutscenes. On the other hand, the weapon effects were great viewed from that perspective (that game made me feel more immersed in fighting than in any FPS), I don't think I could see the visors working in third-person, and first-person grapple beam swinging was extremely fun.

How about games that have both first and third person views?
I vote for this one, it makes it so much more unfair for the computers.

I'm really not fussed either way. It all depends on whether or not the game itself is good. Neither perspective would save a bad game nor would either ruin a good game.

In the later games, they had particle physics to the visor which make it unbelievably sexy. Like, if you look up during a rainstorm, you can see the little water droplets on your screen.

I find FPS's more emersive.
this one here is the ticket. also I was raised on doom, quake, wolf3D, blood, blake stone (LOOK IT UP) and these games were immersion in a way the 3rd person shooters of the day couldn't touch. without the gameplay developments of FPS's your modern third-person shooters wouldn't be nearly as good as they are - they'd still control like res evil 1 or mario 64 or some other awful crap (crappy concerning controls)

It doesn't matter to me at all.
I just enjoy shooters, whether they're first or third.
Same here who needs sight when you can just shoot people? Am I right?

(I have already given my opinion on this above but I couldn't help quoting this.)

Why can't people have a choice, switch between first and third at will it's not hard we all know that both are entirely possible so it can't be hard to put them together.

More on topic first person and third person are just about the same but I like 3rd person better, because if you had some pimpin armor, the most BadAss armor around wouldn't you like to be able to see your armor (or clothing depending on if we are talking about space marines or cowboys)

I'd love to see a second person shooter. You control the main character, but your perspective is from each enemy you're about to kill.

And i can't believe how few people chose "i don't like shooters." The best shooter I've ever played is Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction. Why? because it's not up it's own ass trying to be intense and visceral and violent. Epic Games, as a company, is one of the worst things to happen to the games industry.

a second person shooter would be you controlling an npc and trying to kill your main character...right? i think thats what it would be...maybe

i like an over the should type third person shooter game, kinda like gears of war, however i do not think that a second person shooter would work because second person is 'you', what would it be, would the camera be person 1 whos' watching person 2, and ur shooting as if ur person 2?? wouldn't work, over the shoulder is my preference, but other than that an fps is good too
