generally I'm for fps, there have only been a handful of third person games I've ever really enjoyed. Though I think it's more due to some messed up game mechanics in third persons than the actual view.
On that front dark sector was cool ...

Always first-person. I could care less about look at the model I'm controlling, and third-person shooters are often hard to aim with because of the character taking up a generous amount of the screen. Atmosphere-wise, first-person wins again. From a first-person view, it's much more immersive because I feel like I'm actually there.

EDIT:
Does anyone even know what second-person is?

---
Definition: In second person point of view, the narrator tells the story to another character using "you," so that the story is being told through the addressee's point of view. Second person is the least commonly used POV in fiction, though there are a few examples. Many of the stories in Lorrie Moore's book "Self-Help" are written in the second person, as is Tom Robbins's "Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas," which begins: "The day the stock market falls out of bed and breaks its back is the worst day of your life. Or so you think. It isn't the worst day of your life, but you think it is." source
Think of a text adventure. (It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a Grue.)

Examples: Choose Your Own Adventure Books are told from the second person point of view, as are many computer games. source
Again, text adventure games. The Choose-Your-Own-Adventure example should be self-explanatory.

Every now and then I don't mind going to third person (R6V) but I definitely prefer first person.
i feel the same
personally its quite nice to be able to go "wow my character looks bad ass" but in terms of actually playing the shooter i find it easier to nail the headshot in First Person.

Third Person. You can see more, and though it may not be "realistic", it's more fun to see character models than just their hands.
It's a 2nd Person Shooter!

Honestly it depends on the game, the situation within the game, and the quality of implementation. 1st Person is definitely the best way to avoid crappy camera but I couldn't image heavily cover-based gameplay working in 1st Person.
killzone did it fairly well i think. the whole "pop up and shoot" mechanic was rather nifty i thought.

It really depends. I wouldn't dream of playing Mirror's Edge from a third person perspective, but imagine Max Payne from a first person view. Both would be horrible.

I like both. Hidden and Dangerous 2 is my favorite game of all time and set a good model for melding the two perspectives. You can switch at any time between characters and views.
3rd

1st

It also allows for planning attacks over a map and RTS for coordinated action.

What does your title have to do with anything? I was expecting a thread about some weird new shooter genre.
OT- FPS all the way for me.

What would a second person game look like? An interesting question...

I find that 1st person helps immersion, plus in first person games you can look down the sights of a weapon instead of just the little UI cross hair.

On the topic your tittle advertises I'd like to say that while it would be cool to see things from your enemies prospective it would make for horribly broken game play.

How is the title relevant?
The title wasn't relevant... it was simple bait.

I prefer first person shooters, I've played more of them.

However, I don't think Gears of War would work as well in first person.
Sometimes, the third person perspective works better.

I generally prefer to have a choice that can be changed on-the-fly.

But if not, I'll choose FPS. Much easier to aim.

For a competitive multiplayer game, FPS is the way to go. Over-the-shoulder 3rd-person shooters such as Uncharted and GOW are fine for single-player.

2nd person gameplay is in all shooters with local multi-player, it is called screen watching.

I enjoy 3rd person if they do it right(like in Gears of War).
I DO like the fact that usually 3rd person shooters are more realistic(as in, the character acts appropriately to it's surroundings)

Lol I was trying to figure out what exactly a 2nd person shooter would be like...

It all depends on the game. They both can be executed very well.
