So I was wondering - considering all the conspiracy theories concerning the 9/11 attacks, ranging from the plausible to the downright ridiculous, and a 2006 poll I read about a while ago that states that a third of American citizens believes that the American government isn't entirely open about 9/11 and their actions therein - what do you Escapists think about 9/11?

Because it's like the assassination of Franz Ferdinand if Franz Ferdinand had been two large buildings and Gavrilo Princip was two hijacked planes. Because it singlehandedly shaped the entire fucking century to come. You should care.

There's probably something they're not telling us, like the group that did it just brainwashed some fools to do it so America would have an excuse to invade Iraq for oil money or some such.
But that's just how consumerists culture and politics in general goes, trying to grab everything of value because you want to be G-O-D.

My rating of the events, and the related events, is that stuff is upside down: The official story is about the least probable according to my judgement. That does not automatically make every possible conspiracy theory true (falseness of A, does not imply rightness of every counterproposal). I simply don't know what precisely happened - all i know is that the official version to me seems unprobable.

If i had to play with probabilites, rather than certainities, then i would bet on the USA at least having indirectly allowed or provoked it to happen (this for example can happen by NOT doing something, rather than doing something). Actually, whole 911 and all the following mess to me feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I find it hard to believe that any current government is willing to be honest with it's people, especially in serious cases like that. Saying they were responsible might be too far, but I highly doubt the full story is out.
Hell, it took decades for them to declassify the earliest video games, something big like this isn't likely to be revealed for some time. If at all.
After-effects are a b**ch though. They seem more paranoid about it than they should be.

It may have shaped the century. It doesn't mean I should care about it? No-one I know died in the attacks. I was 7 or 8 years old when the attacks happened, so if things changed I haven't noticed. Aside from the paranoia over Al-Queda and Al-Jazeera as the new monsters in the closet, I haven't been bothered in the slightest.

So no. I don't care.
Al-Jazeera is in fact a news agency the site of which I often visit, I think you're confusing it with something else.
Get this: the whole debate about Islam and muslims getting hated just because they are muslims? It's because of 9/11. And this happens globally. Everyone is afraid of terrorists because of one terrorist attack that made it the hot new thing: 9/11. No one you know may have died in the attacks, but it did shape the world you now live in.

There's no doubt in my mind that the attacks were orchestrated by the government. I don't know why that point of view is seen as some kind of conspiracy theory. It's not like that kind of thing is uncommon in this country.

The only thing I found weird is that America was shocked when two buildings came crashing down.

Worse has happened.
Much worse things.

I generally don't care much.

A bunch of insane Muslims flew planes into the WTC and the Pentagon. That's it!

Don't give that "the government's behind it" crap.

Even though its Cracked it makes very good arguments against the conspiracy theorists.

A horrible attack by a handful number of extremists from a major religion that resulted in not only the loss of over 2,000 lives, but sparked hysteria that made America do drastic things that violate the rights of its own citizens as well as the rights of muslims, who are being blamed for something that only a couple followers of their religion did.

I miss the option "I don't know and I've long since ceased to care."

Ofcourse information is being witheld. Every single event in history has had information that at some point was witheld. To suddenly act all surprised about that in this event is hypocritical to say the least.

I guess I believe that the version told by the U.S. Government is a correct one. Have not given much thought into the matter, considering it does not effect me.
