i think that they definately new about the attack, and they either let it happen or as some people have put forward convincing arguments, they actually helped it by assisting in destroying the building

Because it's like the assassination of Franz Ferdinand if Franz Ferdinand had been two large buildings and Gavrilo Princip was two hijacked planes. Because it singlehandedly shaped the entire fucking century to come. You should care.
Pretty much this reason.

OT:
I was in 3rd grade at that time, and a bunch of people were being let out of school early. Out of about 500 kids or so, I'd say I was one of fifty who was still there.

I was to young to understand the gravity of the situation- I did still feel sad- but I didn't really understand what was happening.

My dad saw the plane that hit the Pentagon from his office, and now that I think back on it, it was an incredibly scary moment.

Edit: Oh yeah, conspiracy theories are fun, but I guarantee you the US had nothing to do with it. They may have been told about the attacks, but probably just ignored it.

We probably should, but its just that this has happened before. It just wasnt as... successful the time before.

Anyway, I dont know. I'm sure the gov heldback information, since there are boxes and boxes of stuff that we cant see on pretty much any event the us is involved in. At this point, its pretty meaningless. War happened, lives are lost. Its a rallying point for Americans to get behind, just leave it with that.

Fine! You don't have to care about it! I hope you don't mind if the rest of us do though! because the deaths of so many innocent people kinda make us feel bad! Call us oversensitive!

DAMMIT I WISH I COULD TYPE SARCASTICLY!
If you want to care, go ahead, just don't ask me to join you.

Oh, and typing sarcastically works with a (!) at the end.
Basically, the point is, you don't go to a funeral procession and proceed to say you don't really care about the man's death. A lot of people are American on this site. A lot of them were affected by it.

Show some class.

Why should I care? America think just because it was in their country it's a big deal. Millions of people are dying in third-world countries every day, and when a thousand or so Americans die, it's a disaster beyond imagination. Get over it, America.

No, there's none. Absolutely nothing points that way. Ask any structural engineer.

Someone explain to me how a plane turns into debris and dust upon impact of a building, then we'll talk...

Enlighten me please...
It's an aluminium structure traveling around 800-900 km an hour burrowing itself in a steel and concrete building, only to have that building collapse on it. What do you think?

Frankly the idea that any government especially after a huge incident of any kind, would NOT hold back information from it's people is the same as thinking the Pope would come out and admit that Jesus was Satan's lover. It's not going to happen, and to think they wouldn't lie to us to protect us, them, their allies is foolish.

I have no clue who was "really" behind it all, but I know this, it was an attack on those buildings, it destroyed them both, thousands died, and we essentially went to war over it. That is all I know for certain. Anything else is just rumor and theory . . . I've no doubts we may never actually know what really happened, but who knows . . . maybe someday the information will come out. After all they do say truth is stranger than fiction.

The destruction of the World Trade Center (and the attack on the Pentagon) was an act of terrorism carried-out by a small group of religious fanatics.
If you want to mislead a populace into doing what you tell it to then there are cheaper and far less risky methods than staging an attack on your own soil.

There's probably something they're not telling us, like the group that did it just brainwashed some fools to do it so America would have an excuse to invade Iraq for oil money or some such.
The 9/11 attacks were the reason given for invading Afghanistan. The pretexts for the Iraq invasion primarily focussed on the Iragi regime's supposed stockpiles of WMDs (which did not in fact exist), with some rather hurried humanitarian attempts at justification tacked-on as well.

The only thing I found weird is that America was shocked when two buildings came crashing down.
Considering over 2000 people died in one of the only attacks on the mainland USA since the country gained independance, I didn't find the reaction particularly weird at all.
This pretty much says all I want to say, on topic. In my opinion, the US administration was taken off-guard. I presume there'd have been the usual cover-ups of failed intelligence services but nothing major.

However, to those of you saying you don't care: I am actually ashamed to be sharing the same message boards as people so fucking heartless. I'm a Brit, so you can't claim I'm biased towards empathy to Americans. I've made brief visits to the US, for holidays, as I have to other countries. To say you don't care about such a huge loss of life, whether it's caused by humans or natural disaster is incredible to me. To say it doesn't affect you and then to go ahead and confuse a news organisation with a fucking terrorist group shows me exactly what the problem is. You have absolutely zero awareness outside of your own little world. You are the Sarah Palins of the Earth. Utterly ignorant, unfeeling and a stain on humanity. Grow up and take a look at the world around you.

He asked how I felt about 9/11. I answered. I fail to see why people are so upset over one person saying different from everyone else.
Ask a Neo Nazi about Jews in front of a bunch of jewish people.

Maybe then you can comprehend why people get upset.

America certainly screwed up with how they handled it. However, I don't think they'd have a real reason to lie. So I'll give 'em the benefit of the doubt.

First and foremost: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity or incompetence."

Here's what I believe:
The US government knew ahead of time that something was going to happen, but did not know what or when, and so, could not adequately prepare for it.
The airlines and the government departments did not have sufficient communication relays in place to give clear, precise, accurate information to each other, which caused critical delays.
No one (even the terrorists) realized that the Trade Centers would collapse, because the buildings has been designed with airplane crashes in mind. However, they were designed in the 70s, against 747s, the largest airplanes at the time. A 757 and a 767, significantly bigger and with larger fuel tanks, were what were flown into them. (You can see the fact that even the terrorists didn't expect the buildings to come down, because there was a picture uncovered showing them with a sand sculpture of the towers burning, but still standing.)
The hijackers screwed up on the Pentagon part. They flew it into the 1 wing out of 5 that was being renovated. (A bit of Russian roulette on their part: Many opportunities to win, one opportunity to lose. You can still lose.)
The plane in Pennsylvania was shot down, though, despite what the government says. The government had planes in the air, and it had been hours since it was hijacked. This was a long while after all planes had been grounded to the nearest airports.
I believe that the uprising on board was heroic, commendable, and necessary, but it did not bring the plane down. If it had, the hijackers would have crashed the plane into the very nearby town to kill as many as possible, rather than having it crash into an empty field. The on-board uprising was simply enough of a distraction to the hijackers that they failed to notice the jets coming in and shooting them down with a missile.

Is this really still an issue? I put this in same category of garbage conspiracy theory that I put Kennedy assassination theories and Obama-is-a-secret-Kenyan-Muslim theories. There are no facts to back it up and the reasoning behind why the US government would lie about or even commit such a thing are tenuous at best.

On a positive note it's good to see that right wing conspiracy theorists aren't specifically American phenomenon.

On a negative note it's unfortunate to see that right wing conspiracy theorists aren't confined to American shores.

I think 9/11 is eh pretty cool guy who killed innocent Americans and firemen and doesn't afraid of anything.

No actually 9/11 was an atrocity and the group behind it should be hung from a tree

Since I lived in Washington DC during the attacks I've always thought it was an attack by enemies. Everytime I hear these conspiricies it upsets me. 9/11 isn't a day I like to think about.

I find it hard to genuinely care anymore, since it didn't effect me in the slightest, most minute way, and it was 9 years ago.

But when asked about it, my answer is always the same: it's a conspiracy. The US government made it happen so they could get their citizens all riled up waving American flags and declaring death to the East, so the US could get more people behind its unjustified invasion and subsequent resource-skullfucking of foreign countries.
