The one problem I could for see is a bunch of really over powered jerks who stay in the first town and just pick fights with the lower level people.

Might be good, but I'm not sure. I kinda like just collecting them and getting them to level 100.

It'd work alot better than most current MMOs. Unless they made Elder Scrolls Online. I'd play that.

No, but only because pokemon is shit now. A pokemon mmorpg at the time of blue and red (gold and silver at a push) would be a deffinate yes.

People might get bored with the idea since it's almost just a regular pokemon game with an online world.

What would really be cool is if when you battle with your pokemon you take control of them and it acts like a 3D 3rd person combat game. That would be sweet.
That does have a very nice ring to it, would be a lot more exciting than turned based combat.
Exactly. Thats the problem with pokemon games. They are always turn based and can get very boring. I want to sitting on the edge of my seat as pikachu jumps out of the way of an incoming onix's iron tail. The attack power and weakness systems we already have in the pokemon games could still be in play and apply here but 3D 3rd person combat would greatly enhance the experience.

i do not think that it should have every pokemon in it at all, for i think ruby and sapphire have shocking pokemon :S but i think including all of gen I and gen II would be okay.

could someone please link me to one of the existing pokemon online games?

I think the biggest problem is the question of how to set up combat and how the actual gameplay would work. In most every MMO you play as your one character and you get a certain set of skills. So would the player be a certain Pokemon who would have his strengths and weaknesses in the rock/paper/scissors way that pokemon is set up or would you be a trainer? If you are the trainer it becomes very interesting how to set up combat. In every pokemon game you have 1v1 matches that are closed off to outside forces. But would you set it up that way so every time you ran into a wild pokemon or a trainer who wanted to gank you it sent you into a separate closed off instance? Or would it be open to anyone so a third trainer could send his pokemon into the battle to help someone getting ganked?

Pokemon would just add another layer of complexity most MMOs don't have to worry about.

It sounds like what Pokemon should have been in the first place. A game about people training their Pokemon to do battle with each other just sounds so much more like it should involve a world of real people training and competing, instead of one person playing against NPC's of gradually increasing difficulty.
What gradual increase of difficulty. I probaly played it all wrong but 30hrs into diamond i only had 3 gym badges and on my way to the next city the opponents pokemon levels jumped from lvl 20's to lvl 30's. You could only catch lvl 16 pokemone in the area as well.

OT: I would play the MMO. Would be a fun change of pace. Although there would be alot of Pidgy vs Pidgy for a long time.
I didn't even know it was possible to be that grossly underleveled in a pokemon game, I've clocked 19hrs on Heartgold (yeah it's a little slow but I've been doing waaay too much voltorb flip and other stuff), in general you just hit everything with your starter, and you tend to be at least 20 levels above everything by the 5th gym, or at least you still steamroll over everything with your starter, excluding it's weakness gym or maybe the first gym if you're new.

OT: GIEF NAU. I mean exclude the legendaries or only make them available to people at the very end of the hardest PvE content, make the Pokemon function replace gear like in other MMOs and it's work fine for the most part.

Take the world they've developed and make it actually feel like the world, and keep on expanding on the online features. I'd rather see them improve on that than try to tread into MMO territory and possibly lose what makes Pokemon fun in the first place.[/quote]

I think Pokemon is probably the single most compatible franchise for a MMO, heck it's almost begging to be made into one.... unlike others *looks at the Twilight MMO*

But what would really be a kicker is if they changed the combat system to be more Real time, something closer to the anime I guess. YOU decide the exact moment when Bulbasaur launches it's vine whip, YOU decide to use Gust to counter the poison sting, YOU strafe to avoid incoming tackles. But that's just my preference I guess, I mean, why change a formula that works right? and GOD knows Pokemon worked over the last decade...

another interesting thing would be if you could choose to specialise into training, breeding, coordinating, ranger...ing? or whatever other stuff you can do to pokemon (that didn't sound right...)

also... 3D and instead of random encounters, they spawn (yeah like most other mmos... flame me!) but again that's my own personal preference.
I sometimes think that this is a good idea; I mean having set moves that either hit or don't hit, being hit with Fire Blast when you're an ice/bug type? (by the way that's just an example!) So yeah one with a sort of RTS would be good.

It would work if they devoted the proper amount of effort into it...
The team working on Pokemon haven't shown a great deal of effort recently, so...

It's very likely that it would be mind blowingly awful, and would crash and burn within a few months.

But I would play it anyway.

Not unless you can somehow separate the high level trainers from the low level trainers... Pokemon only works as a single player game. The low level Pokemon are in a certain area but they're a certain type as well... then you couldn't go to a certain area to get a certain type, you know? They level as you level.

Think I heard something a while back about "Pokemon Crater" which I believe was an MMO of sorts. Think it closed down if I remember rightly and I can't really be bothered to double check. I imagine there's nothing official and probably won't be for a while.

I would hope, i would love to see a full 3D pokemon game, no random incounters, you see the pokemon in the wild, you run up, you battle it, you catch it.

Diamond / Pearl incorporated online trading and battles. I don't see how it isn't already MMO, other than the fact that it's not a shared mapset, and you need friend codes to battle.

And the most pressing question of all:
Do you really want to get griefed by some 8 year-old kid's pack of auction house Jirachi, while you're trying to capture a wild Manaphy?

Of course it would. The battle system is already almost exactly like an MMO. The only difference is that the two pokemon don't punch eachother while you decide what move to use. Just make the battle system like world of warcraft. You click on opponent pokemon, they automactically start punching eachother, you use number keys to tell pokemon to use moves. I'm guessing legends wouldn't be available for capture though. You should be one trainer among many, not a pokemon catching god.
