Maybe as a tutorial mode that new players are required to complete before playing multiplayer games...

I think a CGI Movie would be better.
TF2 singleplayer campaign would be too far out and it would either way end up as dumb as Unreal Tournament campaign or very costly because there would have to be a whole bunch of new maps, enemies, etc. to be created.

Hm... If they do it, they shouldn't make it too serious. Part of the fun of the series is the ambiguity of everything, like Spy vs Spy from Mad Magazine.

Think about it for a second. Don't you want to see HOW the team members got to where they are today? Don't you want to see how the medic became a medic? or how the spy became a spy? Don't you want to know WHAT'S IN THE INTELLIGENCE BRIEFCASE???
No. Go watch Ronin.

All the characters have just enough backstory to have tons of character, and but not enough to ruin personal creativity. Let'em be.

I would totally go for a TF2 "mini series", comprised mostly of small shorts like the "meet the team" videos, though.

It's a neat idea, but:

1) It would take time away from Valve when they could be working on TF2 updates or Episode 3.

2) How would the gameplay work? Just TF2 vs. bots? Would you be shooting mindless, underpowered goons? Or would you fight really gimped versions of the regular classes?

Like other people in this thread have said, I think a movie would be the best way to add to the story.

Of course then we would have to deal with more writing from the guys behind TF2, and does anyone really want that?
Who do you mean? The guys behind the Meet the Team shorts? Those are awesome, why don't you want more of that?

I think it could be good, if done correctly. It would need to be handled with care though. Maybe get Tim Schafer in to do it, his weird style would work pretty well with Valve's flagship multiplayer killfest. Seriously though, I think it would be a good idea, especially if it was based on the 'Meet The...' series, or was done as a completely original story in the TF2 universe...

In the same way not all single player games need multiplayer. A good multiplayer game doesn't need a campaign.

You shouldn't try and make something its not.

I have the bad feeling that would end up like the story mode of Unreal tournament 3, a poorly written and slapped together mess because the majority of effort is placed squarely on doing one thing right: multiplayer.

The story and characters are explained in "Meet the team" videos and since they are masterfull I feel no need for a SP mode.

it has to be funny, and each character needs his own unique campaign, since Heavy´s will have problems with stealthy Spy objectives.

No.

Not at all, it's a multiplayer game, and if the A.I was even slightly sub par it would be shite. It doesn't need a single player part, some people would then just complete that and never get to play the game for what it was made for.

While I think it would be hilarious fun, I have to go with no. Simply for the reason that I actually want Episode 3 out before I die.

I'd love it, with the humour and the story, but gameplay-wise? No

You'd either have something completley different from the multiplayer, which completley defeats the feeling of the game
OR
You'd have multiplayer...with bots.
...

...yeah...
