They give you goals, so yay?

Gamer just like seeing "You won" or any variant on that. And that's fine. It's not like we get anything else from winning.

Achievements/Trophies are cool, but the score is a bit retarded. It's cool to see significant progress made in the game via rewards along the way, but the whole 'This one is super hard! Try it for extra points!' is a bit silly. Some of the easy ones are like pulling teeth, while you can accidentally stumble into the hard ones without even realizing it. The little pop-up is cool, with the little 'Ding!', so you get that cool feeling, but being shown that defeating the final Kraken-Basilisk-Armageddon-Machine-Thing in an arm wrestling competition earns you less than a 'You have blanked 50 blanks. Way to go!' is a bit asinine, especially when we get the feeling that they're grading us for sticking to their schedules. Especially since a good portion of the achievement/trophy list is just gamelenghteners that really don't have much appeal unless you've got a few extra hours of absolutely nothing to do.

Has XBLA - Castle Crashers been mentioned? That game was ruined by achievements. You have to beat the game, like, four times. Also, what stinks about a lot of Xbox 360 achievements is that I usually can't get them because they're all ONLINE. I don't actually have an XBL Account, so I usually can't put them to use anyway.
But, the achievements do give me a sense of, well, achievement. I finally get a really hard one and I'm like "Eff yes, I finally did it!"

Yay.

Because i have enough time to play through several times per game.

And you should have predicted THE SPOILER GUIDE would SPOIL Fallout for you
Actually, the guide was fantastic with the whole "IF YOU DON'T WANT THE STORY RUINED TO DOT CONTINUE READING" thing.

And I did actually play through the story without touching the guide. It was only after the story was complete that I wanted to use the guide to clean up my save by finding everything. But that made the game lose all its fun. :(

on-line achievements are a ball-ache if there isn't much on-line presence or you get the game way after it was popular but i do agreed that off-line achievements will convince me to play-through more than once, for me i at least go through the first time unassisted so i can see the game for myself and work it out then the second time i use a walk through to get achievements and stuff i missed

I'm not a fan of boosting for on-line achievements...

How about: I'm not really bothered. I don't think they're Spawn of Satan and I don't think they're God's Gift. If I get one: fine, if I don't got one: also fine.

I love achievements, especially when they're reasonable or well-done - I'm currently enjoying Borderlands, Uncharted 2, Forza 3, etc. - which essentially reward you for playing the game and doing it well. Aside from online achievements which suck, I think some games can be slightly ruined by pathetically awful achievements, like Guitar Hero 3 or Madden 10. I have to play every single difficulty in single player AND co-op? I have to play 150 face-offs? I have to tackle Adrian Peterson in the backfield 3 times in one game on All-Pro? What kind of retarded goals are those?

I like achievements but its okay if they dont have them, i mean its a game you play games for fun. If there are some fun achievements then all the better but i usually unlock them by only playing the game

i like achievements but i hate online achievements, like in halo 3, it ruins the fun when you're the person that just wants to relax and have fun and then there is a person on the other team that got so good and doesn't play games for fun anymore just to get an achievement. i think a good way to use achievements is to reward you for getting them, like say, make it so that you can get enough achievement points in one game to buy buy a DLC for it. that way it gives you a goal rather than just getting virtual points that you can't do anything with.

EDIT:eek:h yeah and just so people can't get DLC easy, they make the achievements a real real challenge instead of getting an achievement for beating a chapter, or level.

They're kind of nice. They give a little incentive to try things again, or way you normally wouldn't.

And for many games, it prevents you from lying with no way to back it up. Oh, you say you beat Legendary? Where's your achievement? Oh, you found all the intel? So what happened to the achievement?

Personally, I think achievements kill immersion and, with exception for online game modes, should only exist for unlocking content.

BioShock - Again, I thought I'd be clever and start this game straight on hard with no vita chambers on having had no previous experience with BioShock (I'm not completely nuts, my inspiration here was having CoD4 100%). That didn't work out too well, with me only getting less than half way through the game, running completely out of ammo, money, health and eve and hating the game. Yes it was my fault, but achievements influenced me.
Not youre fault, I Hated Bioshock as it is. Was too generic for me, (please don't hate me everyone.)

but on topic, it really depends on how the achievments are used in a game, especially online. For example, when i play something like Red Faction, or Burnout, its kinda nice to see that little message come adding to your gamerscore. However games like Halo 3 where alot of them you actually have to make an attempt to recieve just to get armor or a sword, that's a low move in my book.... It's like following an order and you get a doggy treat.

Man I just can't be bothered anymore. I surpress the urge to say it's me getting old, because I'm not that old.

When I was 15 and had all the time and patience in the world, having achievements would've been a dream come true.

But these days I can't even be bothered to play games as short as Mirror's Edge twice, even when I loved it as much as I did.

Also, most achievements don't feel like achievements. You get a little picture plaque stating you did this and that, but it rarely makes the gameplay any better.

They fuck up immersion a bit, but I like them.

I'd prefer online ones though, that way you wouldn't be distracted from the main story. The only downside there is that story achievements are almost impossible to avoid. I like having lots of numbers after my name.

I like achievements. It gives me more replayability in my games. I don't like online achievements though, most are just either from grinding or luck.

I love achievements, even more so when done correctly. See Crackdown or Fable II for examples.

Achievements are pretty cool, but I think online achievs are retarded. Only game I ever really tried to be an achievement whore on was WoW though.

Nay. I don't care about them at all and have no desire to get every one of them. They feel like a bit of a waste to me.
