I got the same messed up sleep pattern when I was travelling. For a few weeks I'd change time zones every couple of days and have to deal with no leg room on the planes and not being able to sleep at the airports. This led to me staying up for several days at a time, then sleeping for 12 hours for 2 nights in a row to catch up.
When I finished travelling, I found my body would only let me sleep every second night, but I would sleep for a very long time. I drank alot of booze to try and make this go away, and eventually it did.
