I agree. Altair was a killing machine and his personality reflected that. I loved Ezio as a 2nd place entry for his general nature, type of guy I wouldn't mind having a pint with down the pub but he just didn't ever feel like an assassin.

Ezio but he only just wins over Altair. I hated Connor. To be fair I did not like the American revolution setting as I was not very interested but the guy was just beyond irritating to me. For all the stupid things Altair and Ezio did Connor did more. I get that at the begining he was naive but that cannot last for long. Eventualy he stops being naive and starts being a dumb ass. For example

He had a chance to kill both Haythem and Charles Lee far sooner than he did but he did not because? The whole bit where he went to prison was also stupid. He knows how powerfull the Templars are so instead of taking out the guards and running he tries to explain why he was chasing the guy with fake money and gets knocked out and draged to prision. DUMB ASSS!

Also hlep me out here. I said in another thread that I did not like Connor because of his personality, the things he chose to do/not do and what I belive to be his general stupidity and someone else called my a racist. Can anyone help me with the logic of that statement? Is it simply that I didlike a character who happens to be a minority?

Ezio obviously!

Though I have been replaying the first game again, and Altair's cold and distant demeanor works quite well for the setting.

Conner is just a 2-by-4 in an overcoat who sometimes spontaneously transforms into a captain for some reason.

How can everyone be talking about Altair as the 'best' at what he did? The first thing we ever see him doing is wading out in front of his target so arrogantly that he broke all three rules of the creed, got his partners killed and mortally wounded, and brought an entire fucking enemy army to the doors of the assassin's home, putting everyone's life at risk, nevermind how many of the villagers were slain on the path up to the castle...

Altair didn't deserve a shred of sympathy for that. If I were the head of the Assassins I would have slit his throat immediately and never looked back. Come to think of it, I didn't ever find a single element of him that was likeable at all. It was one of the main reasons I couldn't bring myself to finish AC1, and I almost never, ever, give up on a game's story.

Oh, and in case you're wondering: Ezio. Ezio but a mile and a half.

Ezio didn't feel like an assassin? The guy probably killed thousands, if not tens of thousands by the time he was 60. If we believe the Revelations tv ad, Ezio killed around 90,000 people in his lifetime, a small scale genocide.

I know that many people feel that Altair was "more of an assassin" but I never get what that means. Usually they say that you need a cold demeanour(so they apparently want Altair to be Agent 47) and an arrogant attitude but from what I've seen from the other Assassins in the first game, none of them are as cold hearted as Altair was(or at least how he was in the beginning). Sure, some of them were treacherous but none were killing machines like Altair, always ready to take the life of another(even an innocent). Even in Revelations, the Turkish Assassin Yusuf is quite the humorous guy and Piri Reis doesn't seem like a mean bastard.

Another aspect of the "more assassin" Altair seems to be that he was more stealthy but I ask: how is that the case? I just popped the Director's cut in my pc 2 weeks ago and the game doesn't force you to be more stealthy, you just have fewer weapons than Ezio but it's still game over once you re-aquire the counter kill move. Give him a few more ranged weapons and the ability to string kills and he is Ezio.

AssCreed was never about stealth, only about the illussion of stealth. You literally can't silently kill most main targets, after every major kill s**t hits the fan(since almost all of them are in public you get detected) and you have to run(though in all honesty you could counter them all to death) and/or fight your way through. If you were a true assassin, you would be very silent on your approach and you certainly couldn't handle a s**tload of guards at once like Altair/Ezio/Connor do. Heck, the biggest "stealth" staple that this series has offered was to blend with certain groups to approach the target but it's still quite weak when you compare it to other games that are based on actual stealthing.

In the last hours of AC1 I literally got bored of all the forced fighting and countering(that part around Sable's camp),it was the farthest thing from stealth that you can think of.

I picked Altair for three reasons (based on Ass Creed 1 and 2 since I haven't played 3 yet and, don't plan on playing 2.33 or 2.66)

1: Altair is allowed to be a murderous bastard. Ezio couldn't murder people for being dicks and, he couldn't murder people for the fun of it without getting Desmond booted from his own server. Whereas with Altair the most fun I had with the game was doing a slow prayer walk while randomly shanking people. A game I dubbed 'Duck Duck Goose X' only nobody was ever a duck.

2: Altair didn't overstay his welcome. I recall a cameo in Ass Creed 2 but from what I understand Brotherhood and, Revelations are centered around Ezio. AC2 was fun but it had its chance and those two no-number games could have been about anybody other than Ezio like a ninja-and-pirate or, a Viking-and-Mayan. I assumed by AC2 that the series as a whole was just going to use Desmond as a framing device to explore a shitload of history's great civilizations and then murder famous people.

3: I haven't played Assassins Creed 3. I have trouble remembering Connor's name and I don't even know the full name yet (though honestly I know more of Ezio's name than Altair's). I may change my mind once I do get my hands on AC3 but if it's announced that AC3 will have two or more full on, boxed side-stories then I'll have to withdraw this reason and just stick with Altair.

I love Altair because he is the only found I found myself caring about and has the coolest name.

I find Ezio really dull. He is just not memorable and his character felt unfocused for me. My favorite is Altair, just like the first game is my favorite. because that guy really had real character development in the first game, which became expanded in the Revelations game.

He was a arrogant dick at the start of the game. nobody liked him, including the player and he hated that he was stripped from his gear and rank. what followed was a adventure where he learned and was someone else at the end of it. he became wise and saw what kind of idiot he was.

Ezio was a arrogant kid at the start, then wanted to revenge, then was a kid again and then he felt too good for revenge followed by revenging stuff. He was all over the place and really overstayed his welcome. It didn't help that II and Brotherhood were 2 forgettable games with character that got no proper introduction at all. "Hey, i'm a thief. We will be friends. Help me with this and then I will see you again at the end of the game."

didn't play 3 yet, but I would be surprised if Conner would be better then Altair.

Altair is the only one that actually looks like an ASSASSIN, Ezio looked like it would be really really difficult to do anything with the getup he had in the later games, Altair was a genuine assassin, and a really good one at that, Ezio and Connor just don't feel the same.

Initially, I thought Ezio Auditore was a cocky, brash, none too bright caricature straight out of the godfather... But he controlled well.
He started making wise cracks. He seemed to have genuinely close relationships with his family..
He genuinely cared about them.

And then... he seemed so lost and alone when his father and brothers were take from him.

He struggled to protect his remaining family members- wanting to keep them safe, he put them in his uncle's fortress and shouldered the burden of rebuilding their lives, and then taking on a quest bigger than revenge, though the two complemented each other.

He never quite lost that sense of humour, though. Or that respect for learning or that passion for life.

I grew to love Ezio as an old dear friend and I was heart broken to see him go in Legacy.

Ezio. Best of a bad lot.

Altair had no personality whatsoever and Conner is a joyless ponce.

Mines a toss-up between Ezio and Altair. Chances are I would have liked Altair better, but I had 3 games to get to know Ezio where as only like, one and a half to get to know Altair. Granted the Altair bits in Revelations were pretty interesting, I just liked Ezio better. Specifically, Ezio in Brotherhood would be my favorite.

As for Connor...I haven't beaten 3 just yet (just took down my second main target), but I'm having trouble getting over the fact that he's an impertanent ass-hat. Granted, I accept that he's SUPPOSED to be an impertanent ass-hat as part of his character. A native american boy that sees his family get slaughtered (not a spoiler since that tid-bit is revealed in the trailer for the game :p), it's understandable that he'd be walking around with a chip on his shoulder. I just wish he respected his elders a bit more, Achilles in particular. This man gave him equipment and training and a path to his destiny, but due to his impatience Connor can do nothing but ***** about how things are moving too slow. He doesn't want to help anyone or do anything that won't also help his people, and literally has to be convinced to go a single mission further by having someone explain to him that by doing this he'll also be protecting his people and their land.

Again, I accept that these things are supposed to be there, that him being brash, abrasive, and impatient are all part of his character. Doesn't mean I have to like it, though.

I like Ezio because to me, he epitomized what it meant to be a leader amongst assassins. A wealthy noble by day, stalking the shadows and roof-tops by night. He was smooth and charismatic, qualities that I think a master assassin needs, and I just don't see those qualities in Connor or Altair.

And on a side note: Revelations fucking sucked. Yeah, I said it. :p

It seems I was wrong! I do like Altair but Ezio is my favourite still, I can see why there is less love for Connor though he was a little bland and not bland as in cold like Altair was.

Altair all the way! He had style. Ezio always rubbed me slightly the wrong way for some reason, I can't exactly put my finger on it. Although admittedly, I still haven't seen Connor, so I can't exactly judge him fairly. But I doubt he can top Altair.

But judging from this

He'll at least be a runner up.
:p Interestingly enough, and as cool as the tomahawk is, I find myself using almost nothing but the hidden blades in AC3. Pretty much everyone comes after you with the bayonette of a rifle, and the hidden blades are the only weapon that you can counter-kill with when someone attacks you melee with a rifle.

Though I've gotta say that Sawtooth Sword I got from pre-ordering has proven to be quite badass as well. :3

The first thread I ever created on this forum back in 2009 was Ezio vs. Altair as characters, back when 2 had just come out. Got 1 answer saying that "Everyone is gonna pick Ezio anyways" and got a warning/locked thread.

Maybe the mods have gone soft on us? :p

I quite enjoyed Ezio myself, but I really like the clothing of Altair and his style. Cool stuff.

Haven't played Revelations or 3, but I have to say Altair. As many others have said, he was the most assassin-like of the three, and his game and journey was by far the most focused. Altair started the game as a very unlikable character, and the entire campaign was spent learning more about the world and maturing as an individual.

Ezio and his games weren't about anything. Revenge? Oh goodness, how original. Add in a random sim-city minigame which quickly gets way more emphasis than it ever should have and a severe lack of focus, and the games featuring Ezio rapidly lost the magic and immersion that the first one had.

The problems that plagued the series as it progressed did the same thing to its protagonists. Ezio does wildly contradictory things throughout the span of his games, and he does a lot of stuff that isn't really necessary to drive the narrative forward. I get that video games don't have as much of an emphasis on narrative as film or television, but it's inexcusable that they throw it to the wayside as much as they have.

Remember when Assassin's Creed was about science fiction as well as its historical simulation? It was great.

I just find the tomahawk amusing.

Pretty much this.

Altair was the only one who felt like an assassin. He was violent, mysterious, and intimidating. It was in the way he acted, the way others treated him, etc. You completely understood after only minutes with him that he was very dangerous person.

Ezio on the other never had anything remotely like the presence Altair had. He acted like a college student for most of ACII and others treated him like that. No one ever acknowledges his body count, and he never really evolves in a believable way. The guy is a mass murderer; he has killed hundreds of people, but he acts totally nonchalant and casual about it.

The closest they come in any of the games to portraying him appropriately is just after he kills the Doge. Ezio, Antonio, and the new Doge are sitting together and talking. Ezio mostly stays out of the conversation, instead sitting slightly off to the side with his hood up. It's subtle, but it functions as a sort of warning to the new Doge and you can just imagine what's going through his mind at that point.

Haven't played AC3 yet, so I don't know much about Connor, but judging from what I've seen and what people have been saying, I doubt he'll have the moxie Altair had.

I hear what you guys are saying about Altair being the most intimidating and "Assassin-like". Yes, the later episodes greatly expanded and improved his character.

But I just can't get past the stupid American accent and water-solluablility from the first game.

Ezio seemed like an interesting, more fleshed- out character. And I genuinely enjoyed playing as a charming rogue.

Haven't played ACIII yet, but from what I've heard about Connor, he's kind of a jack-wagon.

So...Ezio all the way for me.

Altair, hands down. Without him, there would be no Ezio, Haytham or Connor, Besides, AC 1 was the only one I've finished.
