Ezio, they could of still done his story without Altair. Not to say Altair is a bad character, but the first game stopped me taking him seriously.

Connor is a fairly decent character, i like how AC3 portrays him, even if he can be a dick at times. But Ezio is by far the best, probably because he has had 3 games and a lot of character development, sad that we probably won't see much more of Connor.

Haven't played any of the Ezio games (but I have read the book that's about what happens in AC2), haven't seen the entirety of AC3 yet, so maybe I'm a little biased when I say Altair. But I'm still saying him anyway, with Connor being second.

Having only played 1 and 2 in any great length, I'll have to say Ezio is my favourite. But once I get ACIII some time in the future, I may change my tune...

Although Ezio is by far the most fleshed out and therefore easy to like...
I mean (having watched the movies) I've seen Ezio's whole life unfold (Bar his experiences in Constantinople) from beginning to end as well as the secret life of his father. It's hard to get to know and like the others when they don't appear so much.

I prefer Aveline. Otherwise, I would vote for Altair.

It's not that their respective games do everything the best; it's that I think they make the best lead characters.

Here is a fun exercise to help answer the question if character is well-developed or not: try to describe said character without saying what he looks like or what he does/his occupation.

Altair: Hmmm... I'm guessing... arrogant at first? But than he becomes like... wise? After stabbing some people, he... Ehh....

Ezio: Cocky young man, with nice sense of humor. Amorous, brave and dashing. Cares passionately about his family. Emotional. As his journey unfolds he develops a more serious and mature outlook on life which serves to strengthen his beliefs in assassin' creed. I could go on.

Connor: I have no idea, haven't played it yet.

Do you see the problem here? Between Altair and Ezio there is only one character who isn't a 2D-cardboard cutout.

I love Assassins Creed but the ending of the 3rd confused and stressed me. So to avoid dwelling on the confusing end, I bent my tiny mind on deciding which of the three assassins I preferred.

Yes it was obviously Ezio because he has the most games, the most character development and he is Chris Redfield (and Sonic the Hedgehog apparently). But I am curious as to who is the more prefered out of Connor and Altair. So to kick that off I have chosen Altair probably because I am a huge fan of the first game's setting (but not its controls), I also found the cold warrior monk attitude was rather to my liking, it just feels more like what a deadly killer should act like.

You are probably wondering why I did not just make a Connor vs Altair poll, my answer is that I would be torn to pieces by people asking me where the hell the Ezio option was. Telling me he is their favourite so I can "just deal with it", and bombarding my inbox with various memes.

It will be interesting to see who is the favourite assassin and maybe I will be wrong, and those who just finished AC3 will be charmed by Connor's various hairstyles, quaint Native American speech and childlike naivety. Or maybe Altairs out of place american accent will prove best.

But my money is on the Spaghetti eating, Pope Basher.
I chose Altair as well. Because as far as assassins go, he actually changed after all his trials. He didn't become a whole new person (Unlike Ezio who went from whiny ladies man to pro hax0r killer in a few hours of gameplay). And also
I doubt Desmond is dead. After having looked at it logically and analyzing the ending over and over again, he didn't burn to a crisp after having touched the device. I think its more along the lines that once he freed Juno and chose her plan, that his brain is now deep inside the Animus and he is going to have to destroy her from the inside while his Dad and the rest of the Assassins do they best they can to subvert her from the outside.

How can everyone be talking about Altair as the 'best' at what he did? The first thing we ever see him doing is wading out in front of his target so arrogantly that he broke all three rules of the creed, got his partners killed and mortally wounded, and brought an entire fucking enemy army to the doors of the assassin's home, putting everyone's life at risk, nevermind how many of the villagers were slain on the path up to the castle...

Altair didn't deserve a shred of sympathy for that. If I were the head of the Assassins I would have slit his throat immediately and never looked back. Come to think of it, I didn't ever find a single element of him that was likeable at all. It was one of the main reasons I couldn't bring myself to finish AC1, and I almost never, ever, give up on a game's story.

Oh, and in case you're wondering: Ezio. Ezio but a mile and a half.
^THIS

Altair WASN'T particularly good at his job, especially compared to Ezio and Connor. The whole "Altair is a master assassin" thing is literally only backed up by the fact that the OTHER assassins around him at the time were even MORE useless at their jobs.
And my gods was he bland.
His character range varied all the way from asshole who needs a knife in the throat, to having no character at all.

I have to agree with what leyke said above me, but also, i can't really pick one of them because each has such different characters traits and history, it feels to me like comparing honey to steak, or FPSs to RTS, or any other completely absurd comparison.

Overall, each of the three Assassins explores a different motive and driving force for their life as a devoted Assassin. Altair was raised within the Brotherhood, Ezio sought for power to achieve revenge, and Connor thought only of safeguarding his village (at least as far as i've gotten).

A little thought here; I was recently demoted from my job as an Assistant Manager at my job when I should've been fired. The reason why I was only demoted instead of fired was because I was good at my job and because I set up a sting that caught two thieves on my crew. My General Manager's reasoning was,"He didn't have to bust the thieves and it would take too long training a replacement." So now I'm back to Crew Trainer.

What am I getting at? Altair was good*. Very good. And when he fucked up, instead of just getting rid of
him, his Master gave him a chance to redeem himself. Life isn't so black and white. If they'd killed Altair, where would the Assassin Order be today? Remember, Altair DID rebuild it. If Altair were killed, there would be no Ezio. If there were no Ezio, there would be no Conner. Let's not forget that half of what makes the Protagonists so good as assassin's is the Eagle Eye. The other assassin's didn't get that ability. It's passed down through the generations.

*Remember that whenever you fail, you risked desynchronizing from the Animus. Whenever you took damage, you risked desynchronizing from the Animus. Meaning that "in real life" Altair never took damage from fights and he never failed.

Mostly because they really fleshed out his character, but also because they got rid of that ridiculous American accent.

Ezio is still my favourite though.
Actually I hated Altair. He was so bland and drab. In the original AC he was a bum fuck screw up. A good assassin, but he was total shit in everything he did and thats why he had his rank striped from him.

He had no personality. And then in AC2 they decided to make him a fucking genius who can figure out how to make a pistol, the poison hidden blade, and a way to figure out how to use the blade w/o cutting off ring finger (although that'd probably be pretty easy).

Maybe in bloodlines he actually had development other than "I want to get my title back... Oh shit i've been betrayed, now i gotta kill... uhm i forgot his name" But i didn't play bloodlines because i didn't want to play AC on my god damn PSP.

I like* specifically Ezio in AC2. I don't think Ubisoft meant to give ezio a trilogy, because his story clearly has a beginning, climax, and ending.

I think it's cute that there's no option for Aveline. I'm not sure whether to jokingly cry racism or sexism. You guys pick.

Either way, my vote goes to Aveline.

Ezio wins barely by a few points. I like Connor. When he's on the job, he's the "take no-bullshit" and "straight to the point" guy. However, he cares deeply for the people he protects and he's willing to help those who just want to live their lives without people restraining them.

I find it fun that they made Desmond better in AC3. He's been a mostly a blank page. But in Ac3, he's a page with a few colours on it.

Altair wasn't generally a screw up. Mostly just the one epic fail, but that doesn't change that he nonetheless wasn't very good at his job. All the other assassins would be just as good if they had Altair's inherited abilities.

Altair wasn't a genius either. He never invented anything. The Apple just showed him how to build advanced gizmos and he wrote it down.

At this point, Desmond is actually a better character than Altair... And Desmond is pretty boring too.

No one cares about Aveline because she's a PSV character. Most people haven't played that game, and thus don't care.

I find that Ezio is probably the most developed Assassin that we play as, we stick with him for several decades of his life after all, and that leads to us getting a lot more insight into his character. He's funny, charming, good-natured, and kind of cynical; he's a very enjoyable character through and through, even with his Inigo Montoya-esque starting motivation. He get's my top pick.

After that, I have to say that Altair is probably the best. Revelations really helps rehabilitate his image and personality, it made him a far more enjoyable character, and even gave him some levity in his dialogue. Plus, his Revelations voice is just awesome, and he also has by far the coolest outfit out of any of the three main Assassins.

Connor is....well he's not a bad character by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't quite like him, for two main reasons. First off, he's just so self-assured and self-righteous at times that it can be a bit off-putting. He's probably the only Assassin of the three that never seriously questions some aspect of the Assassin lifestyle, he just mainly accepts it rather quickly. the second reason is perhaps a bit pettier, but nonetheless important to me: Connor could really stand to lighten up on occasion. I know that he's more stoic and serious than his predecessor, but even still he could stand to have at least a little fun. Humor, to me, helps make a character relatable, so that's why I'd put this as Connor's problem.

As an honorable mention, though, I think that we can't exclude Giovanni Auditore or Haytham Kenway.

I'd put Giovanni, based on what we saw of him in Lineage, at about Altiar's level of coolness, as he has the whole "double life" aspect to his character and Ezio had to get his tendencies from someone.

Haytham, on the other had, I feel really gives Ezio a run for his money as most interesting character in the series. If he had more time as the player character, and didn't undergo such a shift in characterization during the timeskip, I think he'd really be just as interesting as Ezio. Seriously, he's got an awesome story arc (in the beginning, anyways), and awesome accent, and an awesome outfit (the most non-Assassin one of the bunch, I really liked it). I think it would be great if we got more time to play as him in the story.

...

I have to ask, though, has anyone played Liberation yet? I haven't, but I want to know what people think of Aveline, as from what I gathered, she seems like another very compelling character.

I'm not sure whether to roll my eyes or start to rage, but that is probably what you want so I will roll my eyes.

I didnt even know who Aveline was until I read your comment from just now and realised she was that one from the ps vita game. I dont even own a vita so how am I supposed to know who the hell she is. Plus it was not widely advertised so I would not be surprised to learn I am not the only one who has never heard of her.

I don't think she even looks like an Assassin she wears no white and has a fucking Pirate hat! Plus she is a spin off character anyway and I was thinking about the main games like everyone else seems to be. Just to make you eat those words and show you I am not racist or sexist, I have added her as an option, dont be so quick to judge.

I'd rank the Assassins like this:

Ezio
Achilles
Connor
Mario
Giovanni
Haytham
Machiavelli
Desmond
Altair

Can't place Aveline. Dunno anything about her.

I clicked Ezio but it's really a tie between Altair and Ezio. And I must say I'm liking Connor more than I thought I would. I may not share his views and often agree with what he does/doesn't do but he's a damn good character.

And while it may have taken 5 games (only at like seq. 9 so no spoilers for what happens!) Desmond has finally become an actual character and a likeable one at that. His rallying against his predetermined fate is quite interesting.

Though in all honestly, I've probably enjoyed my short time with Haytham more than almost anyone else. It was like being a Victorian James Bond. Can we have a game of his early career next?

Messing around in Rome with Ezio in Brotherhood was problaby my favorite Assasins Creed game of them all. I couldn't choose anyone but him, since he's honestly one of my favorite videogame characters of all time.

Who do I think is the best developed??

Well Ezio of course.
We spent literally 6 decades with him from his birth to death.

Who do I like the most?

Altair. I think he is actually the most realistic character in the entire series.

I mean come on, if you knew you had the ability to literally kill anyone on the planet, you'd be kind of a douche too.

And we got a proper conclusion to his story through Revelations (one that is rarely found in the gaming industry appearently).

Who do I think would win in a fight?

Altair, since he basicly learned the best way to win a fight is finish it before it starts, and I have no doubt in my mind that he would find a way to crush Ezio and Connor in a single move.
