The sad part is that you will probably end up paying for them anyway, just in roundabout ways. If the crash took out any public property, you have to pay for that through taxes. If they had care insurance, it will drive up premiums (albeit minutely). Hell, if it happened in Australia, there would be hundreds of irate housewives demanding the government release an add campaign or fridge magnets or something detailing the risks of drink driving. In one way or another, I would bet that somewhere along the line your money will end up going to cleaning up their mess.
So no, I don't think you are a bad person, if someone really expects others to pick up the tab when they go drink driving in bad conditions while un-insured, they deserve to be told much worse things.

You know, there are a lot of reasons for which most of us find the actions of the people of the Westboro Baptist Church (the guys who protest military funerals) disgusting, but probably one of the most disgusting things they do, is act without sensitivity towards the feelings of those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. So let me ask a question here, what have you really done? By saying what you said, have you prevented someone else from drunk driving? Have you saved any lives? Have you changed anything for the better?

Or have you just told someone who is probably grieving the loss of someone that they cared for, that the person who died, and the other two who were in a coma, was stupid?

I don't think you are a bad person. I've said more than my share of stupid insensitive things that I came to later regret. You have said something terribly insensitive to someone who is in a lot of pain. At the time, maybe you thought you were just standing up for what you thought was right. That's understandable. But as you think over it some more, I imagine that you'll come to really regret what you've done. You're asking if you're a good person, because you already know that what you did was wrong. You already know that what you said doesn't make anything better, it only makes someone else feel worse.

If the girls who are in comas live, they'll have to carry the burden of their actions with them for the rest of their lives. We've all listened to someone talk who was drunk driving and killed someone. They NEVER get to forget what they did. They already know. Their loved ones already know.

You don't have to give to help them. In all honesty, I might not have given either. But saying that they're stupid to the people dealing with the loss, saying that they deserved it. That's immature, and it does nothing but cause more harm.

I drink alone some nights, and think about the stupid things I've said that hurt others, think about how much I regret saying what I said, and how much I wish I could change it, even though I can't. I imagine I'm not the only one. And if I were a betting man, I'd bet that the time will come when you'll drink at night and think about what you said too.
I think you've said what I was going to say far better than I would have.

The OP didn't do the right thing, he should have punched them in the face.

There are thousands of people killed or put in to critical condition every year by drunk drivers, they don't deserve ANY money, frankly they don't deserve to live, feelings be damned!
You're basically saying that the OP should've punched the person that asked him for the money, even though that person had nothing to do with it. You're also saying that they deserve to die, despite the fact that a person close to them has died and that they will most likely learn from this experience.

You're not wrong, but you're a terrible, terribly insensitive person for saying that. So yes, you're a bad person.

You will remain a very angry, miserable person for many years to come. You are sad and must hate yourself more than anything else on earth to have said such a thing. The overwhelming agreement you've received from the Escapist community does not make you right or your comment just. You need to walk a mile in the shoes of people different from you.

This is not a matter of drunk girls killing themselves. It's a matter of party girls meeting a horrible end you believe they earned...for being stupid. For enjoying themselves when you can not. Worse, you harbor a resentment of girls deriving from you're likely inexperience with them.

Get out. Meet new people. Try new things and to understand that your imperfect life style yields nothing for others. Here, if we ever meet I'll buy you a drink.

I think you should've insisted that they are stupid idiots, and then make a donation anyway.

11 AM? They were drunk at 11...in the morning? On a Tuesday? They deserve what they got, imo...

Darwin Award, maybe?

Driving, while drunk, while there's snow?

Darwin Award. Although I might laugh a bit, I'd give my sympathies and hope they get better but regretfully say I have bugger all cash. Then tell my friends. Their stupidity caused it.

Firstly they are trying to get peoples money, people that have nothing to do with it and they are doing this by appealing to their emotions and trying to guilt them in to helping, so yes, a good punch is in order.
Would they be going door to door looking for money if thee idiots had killed someone?
The hell they would, they quite clearly only care about their own, their selfish, stupid, irresponsible own.

Secondly, I meant those in the car should die, not those asking for money.
And if they were capable of learning anything they wouldn't have tried to drive in the first place.
They were selfish, stupid and they could well have killed or maimed someone that was responsible enough to NOT get rat arsed and drive on an icy road.

no offense... but that WAS kinda dickish... I mean, stupid decision or not, they were still PEOPLE. people with families and friends. they made a REALLY bad decision and payed for it, but it's not just the deceased who were punished; their friends families, and worst of all, the survivor, must live with the grief. terrible decision on their part, but still, someone died... I'd show a LITTLE bit of sympathy...
