I too prefer Assassin's Creed 1 before the second one. I liked Altair better than Ezio, the character of Al Mualim and the story in general. Yeah, dark ages over Renaissance any day. I've beat Assassin's Creed 1 three times and I intend to do it again and that is not something I'd like to do with the second one.
OP sorry, you are not the only one.
Yay! Finally!
^_^ *hi5s you*

And now I feel like playing it again...

Ezio made the game for me. I love characters and Ezio could not have had more character without getting his own saturday morning cartoon show. Altair was cool and interesting in his own way, maybe his personality was more fitting of an assassin, but Ezio was overflowing with charm and personality which I greatly prefer if I am going to spend hours and hours with him. Ezio is a character that actually made me WANT to find cut scenes.

Overall, I will likely never play the first AC again, it took me until the release of the second simply to see it through to the end. It is not 'bad', but AC2 did nearly everything so much better. Missions felt consistently important rather than going through a list of chores that needed doing. You had more to do with crowds, hiring people, having a wider variety of tools even if half of them never needed to be used. So much of the padding was removed or at least put in a much more interesting ways. Even the missions where you simply had to follow people while they talk about their super secret plans out in the open felt fun. There are some things that I miss from the first one that had been stated in this thread already, but overall, I am willing to live without them.

If the first one played like the second it would win hands down. It has a better story but 2 has better gameplay. Although, the gameplay wasn't bad in 1 but the story was terrible in 2, so overall, I think 1 is better.

I like the first one better just because I like Altair better. I think he's hotter and more badass than Ezio. I also like that you didn't have to do assassiny stuff as Desmond, because I seriously don't give a flying fuck about Desmond.

I agree that the story was better in AC1; the second made the characters very cliche and very little time was spent on any sort of development.

That being said, AC2 improved gameplay in almost every way imaginable.

Personally, I like the second one AS A GAME a lot more than the first. The second one is more fluid, plays a lot easier, and has better combat. But I have to say, the story just makes me angry some times, while it is funny to hear "It's a me, Mario" and Ezio's mother making jokes about her son being a playboy, the story sometimes doesn't take itself as seriously. I also feel like when Ezio assassinates people and the game goes into the all white screen with just Ezio and his victim not because the victim has any particular insight that illuminates a secret that has to do with the plot, the game does it just because the first game did it.

Mechanically, AC2 was the better game. In terms of immersion/story AC1 was, for me, superior.
Overall I preferred the first game because AC2 was so ridiculously easy that it became a chore, and featured immsersion-breaking sections such as the flying machine. AC2 didn't seem to take itself seriously at all; I literally facepalmed when first introduced to Ezio's uncle Mario.
Where ACI kept me interested throughout, despite the repetitive gameplay, via the overarching story of Desmond Miles in the real world, AC2 failed to hold my interest at all.

There are a few things I miss from the first game. I rather liked planning my assassinations after collecting all the information on a target. I would literally rehearse it by going to the area the guy was going to be and plan my entrances, hiding spots, escape routes, etc.
I enjoyed that in the first as well, except for the fact that 90% of then ended up going off the rails at one point, because the detection system was fucked.

Other then that aspect though, I'd say the second managed to improve just about every element of the first, which had so many unexplainable quirks, it got on my nerves. You more or less were always detected, unless you were pretending to be a scholar, which never made any sense to me.

And to the OP: at least Ezio spoke with the proper accent. I liked him better since Altir was too cold and bland. Ezio had an actual personality, even before he became an assassin and that carried through after, which made him more interesting, if you ask me.

I liked the first one better because I'm a much bigger fan of the Crusades than I am the Renaissance. But ACII was a much better game - no doubt about that.

I've played both games and I honestly like the 1st one better. I hate all the RPG elements they added and I feel more like a conquistador than an assassin. The time period of the first game was so much better, and the money, and houses and all that other crap in the second is BS. And come on, Altair is so much better.
YOU ARE NEVER THE ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OT: You know what? YOU ARE NEVER THE ONLY ONE! That awnsers the question right there.

I prefer Altair as a character. I liked the story of ACI better than that of ACII, this includes the assassination.
But they improved so much on the gameplay in ACII that I prefer it to ACI

The first is better at being an Assassin game. The second is more fun.
I couldn't pick which was best though...

While ACII had a lot more variety, a lot of it felt unnecessary (the smoke bombs, which I was looking forward to deploying, ended up being the , like Ubisoft was overcompensating for the repetitiveness in the first one, and ended up losing a lot of the core appeal with the first one: sneaking around and assassinating people. Hell, the first half-dozen or so assassinations in the second game all seemed to be "we'll start a huge fight over here while you sneak around back and kill this dude," which ended up being more repetitive. At least with the first, all the big assassinations were unique (my favorite was the big feast where Altair's target ended up slaughtering all those who attended).

The other big thing that ACI does better than ACII are the chase sequences. Running away from guards in the first one was a lot tougher, but also that much more fun when I had to start running through the streets, only to get cut off so I'd leap through a merchant stand, then hop up some crates, grab a ledge, then dart across the rooftops before finding a good hiding place. In the second, I almost never had to put forth any effort to escaping guards. Several times, all I had to do to get away was just turn around and leave the street I was on (or in Venice, to just dive underwater).

All in all, I'll take the first game, even with the few warts.

I've got something to say. Why is everyone hating on Desmond? You do realize you're gonna have to play as him, for a whole game, at some point down the line, right? I was giddy with glee when I got to run around as Desmond in AC2, and in Brotherhood I periodically exit the animus for no reason other than to just randomly spaz out and run around outside. He's got a long-running story, people, it's spanned 3 games so far, which is more than any of the other assassins you've been playing with. Chew on that. You're learning with Desmond, and one day he'll be as badass as all the others and you'll like him just as much, I bet. :D

OT: I liked AC2 more. I personally got stuck in AC1 because I didn't plan things out, so when my targets ran I couldn't catch them because I didn't know the area. I didn't even know I could view those tactical maps of the area until I got pissed off and farted around in the pause menu to avoid having to do it again.

AC2 gave me more things to tinker around with than simply "go kill this guy, and this guy, oh and this guy too." I say the only option AC1 gave you was who you kill first, and really even that was selective. AC2 it was like, "ooh shall I go upgrade my villa, or maybe go looking for glyphs, or go get assassin seals?"

The seals were my favorite thing, and I'm glad they've been reincarnated in the Romulus follower lairs in Brotherhood - I enjoy the fighting and assassinations and things, but really the climbing has always done it for me in AC games. I always hit up all available viewpoints before I do anything else. Ubisoft is just making the climbing better and better each game, I'm continually impressed by the strides they take, so much so that I'm afraid to go back to AC1 and experience the broken and slow climbing mechanics I vaguely remember.

tl;dr - AC2 is better, has more things to do that just stabby-stabby business. And stop wailing on Desmond. 8/

I prefer AC2 over AC1, but there were many things I wish they'd kept:

1.) Replayable missions (I was disappointed when I tries to replay one and found out I could not. Glad they have brought this back.)

2.) Philosophical notions: In AC1, it was established that both Templars and Assassins were trying to create world peace through two different methods, but AC2 turned the Templars into strait up villains. I don't mind that, but it just seems like a bit of a cop out.

3.) The feel of an assassin: AC1 had a greater emphasis on stealth that I enjoyed to a degree and it made me feel like an assassin. Also, I felt that I was planning out my assassination rather than going someplace to kill one person I know very little about. I get that the other missions in AC2 were to build up to the assassination, but it didn't really feel like it.

That being said, I feel most of the other aspects of Assassin's Creed were improved upon with the sequel. I just wished they would remove the collectibles (like Flags and Feathers, I ignored them in AC1 and used a guide in AC2). I enjoy all the other stuff like exploration (like finding Viewpoints), and I liked going for the seals, but the glyph puzzles were the most fun and the most interesting (The whole conspiracy angle is really cool), but those stupid fucking FEATHERS!
