I've played both games and I honestly like the 1st one better. I hate all the RPG elements they added and I feel more like a conquistador than an assassin. The time period of the first game was so much better, and the money, and houses and all that other crap in the second is BS. And come on, Altair is so much better.

So basically you think a stripped down, more shallow and repetitive experience is better?

Meh, I suppose more depth isn't always a good thing in some peoples eyes.

Each to his own taste I suppose, but I infinitely prefer AC2 to number 1.

There are a few things I miss from the first game. I rather liked planning my assassinations after collecting all the information on a target. I would literally rehearse it by going to the area the guy was going to be and plan my entrances, hiding spots, escape routes, etc. You never really get that sort of chance in AC2, it's just "There's the target, go get him." And while you saved way too many civilians from guards in the first, I still would have liked to have done it a few times in the second.

But that's pretty much it, I'd say everything else was improved on in the sequel.

This

Plus if you ever wanted to play as Altair in ACII, there's always the Costume for it which switches you back to the old model from ACI (Hence the lack of the second blade, yet you can still double assassinate)

So nope, ACII is so much better!

I actually agreed with you when I first played AC2. But I gave it a second chance a few months later and revised my opinion.

The second one is pretty much better in every way. What the first one had in buckets was originality.

I played the first game 3 times, so there's...something...about it I like better than AC2.

Maybe it's the setting. And Altair's robes are much less...flashy.

Overall, the minor improvements to the series' combat will keep from from going back to AC1 a fourth time. I can't imagine not having double assassinations anymore...That, and the unskippable cutscenes. I hate the speeches given to you by the boss-man at the start of each memory block due to hearing them so much when I wanted to go back to town after beating the game.

The only that stops me from doing the first Assassins Creed over again is the repetitiveness of having to ride on a horse to each and every city roughly 6 times in a row to catch all of your assassination targets. It prolonged the game far more than needed be, and Assassins Creed 2 fixed that.

Also, Ezio is more human. You can relate to his changes in character over the storyline better. Altair doesn't change, or doesn't change until the last few hours of gameplay.

Just running in and shanking him was all I did in the first one too. Never took me more than a minute to escape after that. I have to think you were over-playing the first and had given up on that by the second.

The second was literally better in every way. Really all the first had going for it was an interesting setting, which was then made a lot more interesting by all the additions in 2.

The first one had an air of mystery about it that drew me in more than the second. I also preferred the assassination jobs in AC1. Combat in the second one was more fun, and it was less repetative. So I guess I liked both of them for different reasons.

I have to agree with OP
i thought the tactical choices you had to choose with the weapons were much better, rather than "I am top level so i win with all my stuff"
Ac2 was piss easy as well

Assassin's Creed 1 was boring and repetitive.

The game went like this:
Find viewpoint
Do three of the same six quests
Kill some guy
Run away and hide
Repeat nine times.

AC2 is better but hopefully brotherhood will be better than that which will be hard as AC2 is amazing

That's why people have been essentially playing the same shooter for fifteen years. ;)

AC2 is much better. more depth, and even the devs admitted that Altair wasn't that good a character.

I worry about anybody who doesn't find the time-period of Assassin's Creed 2 interesting. I'm still learning about things that happened during that time because of these games (no, I don't take my information strictly from the game but it inspires me to research the period more). Also, mission variety. I would have cried had AC1 gone on much longer with the same few mission-types.

For the person looking to continue saving citizens from guards, Brotherhood should let you fill your boots.

The bus you talking about?

You only had to ride your horse to each city ONCE. After you've been to a town for the first time, you can fast travel whenever you want.
