I don't like most anime and I find some of them to be too childish while containing too much violence which is pretty dumb to me. However I love shows like Hunter X Hunter and Full Metal Alchemist so I'm gonna say I love anime. I can't wait for the next episodes for HXH.

Woah, mind telling me what the second one is? The first looks a bit too...Japanese, but the second picture is pretty interesting.

Ralph Bakshi American Pop, Fire and Ice. ever heard of them?
Nope, never. Just looked them up on youtube. Those ARE fairly realistic, maintaining proper human proportions and mostly human faces without far too much stylization.
Still, Le Chevalier ranks as fairly close to human proportions, with realistic body-head proportions, and nearly accurate facial structure (no big-eyes).

I suppose I should have put 'realistic' in the quotes because I meant that over-the-top Western kind of animation, little eyes, big bodies, stuff like the old Batman series (although that's somewhat cartoony in it's own right) it's just the stuff I grew up with, most anime character's features and expressions just seem really weird to me for some reason.
Batman TAS does look significantly different than anime. It can take some getting used to a new animation style; it probably takes a good plot to hook you, and then you'll get used to it soon enough. Of course if you never attract the interest in watching an anime in the first place, you'll never start watching and thus never get used to it.
EDIT: Le Chevalier dubbed on youtube. I probably prefer it subbed, but you can at least see if this trips your Uncanny-Vally-Meter.

I saw Death Note a while back, and liked it a lot, but I've only recently recently started to check out other Animé series. I've loved Higurashi and Spice & Wolf (even more than the first 2/3rd of Death Note), and had some good times with Slayers and Elfen Lied, so I'll probably check out some of the other series which comes highly recommended on this site and others.

My problem with Japanime is that 95% of it falls somewhere between Bizarre Jelly 5 and Princess Robot Bubblegum.
Those are some awesome parodies (on certain animé genres, although it's probably aimed on animé as a whole), although that Bizarre Jelly 5 thing is very creepy too.

I am really quite picky about my anime. Lately, I've focused on Manga more than anime. Ghost in the Shell is my favorite, simply because it's not the usual pile. Akira is a great classic. Ninja Scroll never gets old. But then there's also goofier things, like Azumanga Diaoh, and Excell Saga.

There's a sea of crap out there, and a few gems. I'm in love with the gems. I believe this balences out to a "Like" status in your poll. :)

It'll depend on the anime, but most of the ones I've watched, I've loved.

I love it.

"Why is it called anime yet everything else is just called a cartoon?"

Well, technically if you want to split hairs anime literally means animated. If you want to delve further its because generally speaking anime keeps itself distinct from western animated styles in more than just how everything is depicted.

There's basically two main camps for the animoo.

Legendary Anime-

Yeah, that's a bit of a reach around but this is the stuff that breaks down barriers and generally is well received everywhere. We're talking about Miyazaki films and shows that are widely revered like Cowboy Beebop, Ghost in the Shell and Trigun. These are animes that typically blend- they're not rooted in the traditional "holy shit those are huge eyes and boobs" style you'll see in generic anime. There obvious trends from westernized styles, and sometimes even the English dubs can out do their Japanese counterparts.

That anime-

There hair is huge, their eyes are huge, and they're going to spend 30 episodes training and powering up. This is typically the stuff that is actually confusing- unlike other regions Japan typically puts out their anime as soon as it's ready- there really isn't a proper "season" so much as a story arc. So what happens when you get something like Bleach where the show literally catches up with the manga? Filler content. Typically this stuff relies on stock humor to try to carry it through tired morals and generally bad character design.

Its a shame you don't really see animated features get any exposure in the west short of children's cartoons and comedic functions for grown up audiences (at best, the Simpsons, and early seasons of Family Guy, and at worst crap like American Dad) since its such a dynamic medium. Of course, I also have a theory that there is no such thing as a good Japanese actor which may be exactly why there's so much anime.

I like it. I prefer manga, because last time I watched an anime was last summer and it was Code Geass and Fate/Stay Night.

But it might be because I was raised (also with a bit help from my sister) on Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and before that some obscure anime I can't even remember, only the ending song theme... vaguely.

-1st one is from 'Grave of the Fireflies', a legendary Miyazaki film that will wrench your heart out. Seriously.
-2nd is Cowboy Bepop.
-4th is another Miyazaki film containing a character called Chihiro(pictured). Sorry, dunno the english title.
Thanks mate. I'll try track some of those down.
