Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is the only one which did it right and that's mostly because the events of the movie were explained by an unreliable and biased narrator in the actual movies, so the film still brought new things to the table.

Agrees (plus a fan of the underworld movies). I can not wait for the alien prequel that is comming. Baten Kaitos origins was good (to bad the made battle a little more annoying).

Mostly prequel suck because they are not the same as what your mind came up with.

Does not matter really....although if done RIGHT only.

For example...Halo Reach. Good game but is definitely NOT a prequel done right.

For me the poll doesn't entirely work as it seeks to make generalisations about all prequals.

OT: Godfather Part II was both a sequal and a prequal and I preferred it to part I (which I also hold in very high regard).

I'll watch/play/read them as long as they don't suck.

*insert typical Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, & 3 bashing here*

I wouldn't say I like or don't like prequels - as with everything else it's how you execute the idea that decides if it is good or not. Ocarina of Time is technically a prequel, and it is great, so yes they can be great if the producers put in a good effort, but if they only do it to milk a successful franchise/series, it might not be that good.

I really don't care if it's an original, sequel or prequel, so long as it's executed well.

It's not that prequels make instantly bad films, it's that the idea behind a prequel is pretty poor. They clearly want to make more cash but can't because they're not able to get all the components together for a sequel, so you assemble completely new components and just say it all came before the original. That's pretty cheap, in my book. But I like to judge every film as it comes, regardless of it's places in a sequence of films.

Assassins creed 2, of course. Better story than the first, better graphics, better music. And, as some has stated, Kingdom Hearts 2, DMC 3. I really enjoyed the whole Jak and Daxter series too.
sorry but only DMC3 was actually a prequel :L but i like the taste in games i see xD

Prequels face inherent difficulties because you always know how they're going to end. So it's hard to make a good prequel, such as Metal Gear Solid 3.
I don't think a prequel serves to create suspense so much as to elucidate on characters in whom you are supposedly interested in as a fan. The novel* Let the Right One In is obviously not a prequel to the movie (the Swedish one), but they share a similar relationship. I already knew most of what was going to happen when I started reading the book, the extra subplot notwithstanding, but what kept me interested were the characters. Sure the ambiguity was in line with the minimalist approach of the film, but as a fan (yeah, one of those awful things), I wanted to know more about the characters. The book served that purpose very well, and for that I enjoyed it.

*The novel came first but I read it after I saw the movie.

some games or movies can pull it off.... others just shouldn't even try. Most certainly the three most recent star wars fit the bill as those that should have never been made. Games like crisis core where very enjoyable and are a lot of fun to be had. I look forward to some prequels, but, they aren't what they used to be and aren't surprising any more.

I dunno Metal Gear Solid 3 is my favourite of the series by far, as is Devil May Cry 3, both prequels. I think prequels stand just a good a chance of being worthwhile as a sequel does.

Prequels are good depending on what sort of genre it is. Horror franchises that try to make a prequel seem to forget that part of the magic of horror is not knowing where it comes from. Sci-fi things, like Star Wars? The prequels were a good idea in theory, because there was a lot of stuff to draw from in the universe. Did they do it particularly well? Not really, but it takes a lot for me to hate a movie or game. :)

Maybe prequels should be limited to situations where we already know the backstory to a degree? Sort of flesh out little bits of trivia we already know from other aspects of the franchise.
