I don't think a prequel serves to create suspense so much as to elucidate on characters in whom you are supposedly interested in as a fan. The novel*
Let the Right One In is obviously not a prequel to the movie (the Swedish one), but they share a similar relationship. I already knew most of what was going to happen when I started reading the book, the extra subplot notwithstanding, but what kept me interested were the characters. Sure the ambiguity was in line with the minimalist approach of the film, but as a fan (yeah, one of
those awful things), I wanted to know more about the characters. The book served that purpose very well, and for that I enjoyed it.
*The novel came first but I read it after I saw the movie.
