the mako missions got repetitive, but completely getting rid of it is a bad move imo. you should of added planes and submarines so we can have a full lylat nostalgia... i like landmastering over geth til they died... never got old.

*no Spoilers* Ive been playing through Mass Effect 2 this week and have found it quite lacking in comparison to the first game. I think from a storytelling standpoint it may be better than the first game but i don't understand why they made so many changes in core gameplay. Now it just feels like a standard cover based shooter with bad controls and super powers. I especially miss landing on planets and driving around to explore even though it was pretty much the same every time i thought it worked really well.So is there anyone else who feels this way or am i alone?
Just by looking at the polls you're basically alone :(

Haven't gotten 2 yet, but i've been replaying 1 in anticipation, and i find i dont mind the Mako stuff that much. It can be kinda annoying at times ill admit, but in general i didn't have many problems.
From what i hear i think i can safely get my hopes up for this game.

Why do people keep thinking ME2 removed too many RPG elements!? They didn't remove them, just refined them god dammit. Everything is still there, but now there is not so much stupid redundancy like the first game had. Complaining about ME2 removing any of it's RPG elements is a joke, skills and weapons weren't dumbed down, and the shitty micro managing is the only thing that has been taken away. Hell if ME2 didn't satisfy me so much I'd be the asshole right now saying that ME2 is nothing more than a shooter with weak RPG elements tacked on.
Why? Because they did in comparison to the first game. Example. Not nearly as many side quests, difference between choices are not represented as well. Customization of your character is dumbed down to the point where they might as well have just removed it all. Exploration of area's has basically been shot to hell. Choices made from the first game where not represented well at all, barely showing any of the results given. In some cases they completely ignored the choice made and forced a choice on you.

Dialog was pretty blah, not really any attitude or personality shown, even with renagade shepered. Very litle ability to effect the world around you beyond the main storyline. Stats are all over the place. Inventory system is non-existant so choices of how to outfit has basically been removed also.

Lots of RPG stuff removed. It's a shooter with a really good story and dialog.
Choices not well represented? I don't know what...?

Are we talking about the same fucking game?

This guy is playing another mass effect, an evil mass effect.

Standard cover based shooter? As opposed to a bad cover-based shooter with atrocious controls which was ME1? At least ME2's combat plays well and the controls are good. Landing on planets was mind-numbingly boring and time consuming, especially if you tried to get all the side quests.

You are not alone, there are others who didn't like the game (and those who'll flame it because they think that makes them cool), but you are a minority.

I see a game with unrivaled characters, solid storytelling, excellent atmosphere and fun gameplay. so what if I can't drive my space tank around anymore or can't spend 20 minutes comparing numbers on generic equipment in my inventory. Those weren't the things that made ME1 great. The essence of ME1 is intact and even enhanced.

Not nearly as many side quests? Do I need to remind you that most of the side quests in ME1 took place in the same three rooms? And I mean IDENTICAL. At least the side missions in ME2 are more varied.

Customization? The only thing that was really removed are the weapon mods (which I think should have stayed). Beyond that, the atrocious inventory is gone. Say what you will, but ME1 had a grand total of FOUR weapons and you simply raised the numbers on them. That's not variety. And Armor customization is improved this time around, at least IMO.

Dialogue and writing was better than in the first game, and the characters were much more interesting and emotionally engaging. The main plot is weaker than the first game, but everything else is superior.

At first I was hating the changes, especially the combat, now I've grown to love them for the most part.
I'm still a little annoyed that it makes next to no difference who's in your squad, in the first game you had to carefully balance your team to suit your play style, now it doesn't make a damned bit of difference.
I hate how much the RPG elements have been watered down, they might as well not be there now. I hate the new weapon and armor system, though I'm grateful that I can't fill up my inventory anymore because there isn't one.
I hate how much more linear the new mission are.
I dislike how little side missions there are now, I hate the scanning planets for minerals system and I miss the Mako.

However, I love the new characters, my squad used to pick itself but now I finding myself chopping and changing very often because I like most of the characters so much.
I love the story, it's much better told than the first game.
I love the worlds, they feel much more alive than the dead worlds of the first game.
I love the missions, they're move fun and have a better atmosphere, the dead Reaper mission is especially atmospheric.
I love the new Normandy.

So sure, Mass Effect 2 isn't the game I fell in love with but damnnit, I still love her.

I think I've already ranted to death in a previous thread. AI not able to do the scanning for you or feed your fish, Batarians being a shit enemy, Turian Death Cannon that is ignored until the appropriate plot point and a few other things of note that I can't remember now.

Loved the Mako, miss the Mako. Otherwise, ME2 has the edge (and then some) in every regard.

You know what really gets me? Level cap! I mean not just level capping like in 1, where you got achievements for hitting level 50 with one character and then level 60 with the same character. Level 30!!!!!!!!!! I mean what do I have? The attention span of a gnat? I can cope with levelling up you know, Bioware (and some of us do enjoy it) I am on my second playthrough, and it sucks the big one that I have no more levelling up to do right at the start of the game (I mean dammit I might as well play GRAW or GOW if there is nothing new to learn) Too over simplified, know your audience!
Sorry, that was ranty wasn't it? But I do mean it.
Planet scanning is OK I can deal, it can be quite relaxing.
Conversations I think look more realistic with people moving around, but I prefer a less aggressive approach to the romance option, Shepard feel a bit sleazy this time, less romantic sort of a bit of a perv tbh! With Kaiden it felt genuine, with Jacob she comes over a bit pushy, don't get me wrong after 2 years I don't blame her, but jeez, back up lady and let the man do some running! Remember the old saying ''A man chases a women until she catches him'' ;-)
I had initial difficulty with the combat, but am OK with it (kind of miss the all guns blazing, but you know.....)
You know what the best thing ME2 has given us? Thane! Thane = Win! When a female gamer thinks the green alien is WAY sexier than the human option, it means the writers got something wrong. Jacob looks good, except why the really long torso? (I can't be the only person who thinks he has the weirdest body ever) And why the arrogant attitude dude? Like he's holding all the cards (we've got real men for that, thanks)
I'll shut up now, but you know, still bloody love the game!

I really like Mass Effect 2. The combat is vastly improved, some small problems but nothing that damadges the game, even when viewed as a whole. I really like how I can decide what my armor looks like, makes up for the removal of weapon and armor modds.
Maybe something has sliped my mind but I don't think any of the changes in Mass Effect 2 are bad, diffrent sure but that doesn't mean they make the game bad.

I am oddly compelled to planet scan, dispite how unintresting it is.

ENOUGH FUCKING MASS EFFECT 2 THREADS, WE GET THE FUCKING POINT ALREADY.
Then don't comment in them, let people have fun and pout elsewhere because *this* sure isn't doing anything.

I think you'll find you are pretty much alone in enjoying anything to do with the Mako driving sections. What a horrible, horrible gameplay element. While I do wish ME2 allowed for more exploration, I definitely think their efforts in other areas paid off. Side missions in ME1 took place in the same warehouse, space station, or mine and combat was never really interesting or engaging. Enemies would mass in one area, run around like headless chickens, and all you'd need to do to win would be cast a singularity and fire away.

It's not perfect, as your main complaint is very valid. I think that if they make ME3 with a little more focus on Star Trek-esque exploration and maybe some space combat it will be worthy of something close to a perfect score. But I still find it vastly superior to ME1.

Really I kind of liked the way they adjusted the leveling in this game. In ME1 there were too many redundant abilities, and by level 50 or so I was just putting points into abilities because I had to put them somewhere. Now the leveling system seems more streamlined and focused, and I really do have to think about which abilities I want to focus on the most. You also level so much slower, that it will probably take you at least a second play-through to get level 30.

Also Thane is awesome.

Mass Effect 2 needs more RPG.

I miss there being more than 3 assault rifles, I mean, seriously.
I don't miss there being 10 clones of the same assault rifle, but I miss there being different models and being able to actually buy them in a gun store, as opposed to the "gun store" selling upgrades and not guns.

Good Lord.

Also, armour variation would be nice.

Well..... Yes! Really! I wouldn't have said it otherwise, would I?! ;-)
No it doesn't take a second playthrough, trust me, I walked out of the illusive man's office at level 30, so for the whole game I have NOTHING new to learn! NOTHING! I like lots of skills and benefits and had no trouble finding places to allocate points in the first, I was still left wishing I could level up more because even at the level cap of 60 you couldn't fill every bar! It is just too simple now, like it is pandering to 3rd person shooter fans, not Bioware fans who are used to more wriggle room, iygwim?

Right.
I played mass effect 1 by chance when my brother got it. Thought it was awesome because i had no preconceptions.
ME2 is... unbelivable. They are two different and awesome games, but ME2 is sooo much better.
Sure, first hour of gameplay was kinda weird, with the e being replaced with spacebar and the ammo thing.
But seriously, you're going to gripe about the ammo thing and a few modifications? What do you expect? It's a new game, and it is better. The ammo means you have to think slightl more when shooting, and the heavy weps have to have limited ammo or else it would be too easy.
The only really weird thing is the lack of vehicles, but the existence of vehicle controls.....
????
The story is great.... hell, i haven't done any work these past few days andd stayed way past midnight.
It is FUN, you enjoy it. For your own sake, forget about the little things that you can count with one hand. It's different, but enjoyable. I noticed immediately that I could choose whether to get annoyed att the ammo thing, and the sudden change of controls, but that is stupid. Roll with the changes and you will enjoy ME2 even MORE!
And I hope they release a lot of DLC.

Equipment != RPG. Really, I preferred the RPG system in Mass Effect 2, it made the skill purchases weightier whereas the old 12 point scale made each point spent feel largely inconsequential.

I also liked the dropping of individual weapon skills. Shepard is supposed to be a special forces officer with several years of military service, the fact that s/he is incapable of hitting the broad side of a barn is silly.

That's good and all, but I want more guns, more armour.

I'm pretty sure ME1 had more than 3-4 rifles.

Seriously, why is Shepard not looting the dead, I've seen no less than three Claymore Shotguns when playing, Shepard could've looted any one of them from their ex-owners.
