It's a good excuse to get absolutely plastered on the 20th December, if nothing else.

Also, haven't you guys seen the volcano?! BP?! The forthcoming London Olympics presided over by Boris Johnson?! It's clear evidence that the world is building up to total collapse!!!!

I don't understand all this 2012 talk. Really, when it was 1999, we were all afraid that the nukes would go off and the computers would stop working properly. In the '80's we were afraid that one of either sides in the cold war would drop a nuke and have it done with (can go back in time again with the whole nuke story but.. ey). In 2005 we were afraid something could happen because of the alignment of planets....
In short: We always (need?), for some strange reason, to have something to be afraid of. Why?

If the Maya Calendar stops in 2012, so what? If my boss told me to prepare work till the year 4014, I would sooner or later give him the "two-fingered salute". So who knows if the Mayan didn't do the same thing at some point?

meh the world ends all the time but we rebuild so fast we dont even notice

give it 2-3 nano seconds tops and everything will be back to normal as if nothing happend
That's adorable.

I know you're exaggerating, but humanity takes a lot longer to rebuild than you might think. Assuming that the end of the world is from natural causes (something similar, but not as extreme to the movie 2012) the government wouldn't really have the kind of time or funding to build magic super boats that save John Cusack and his family, nor would there likely be a "safe zone" that was untouched by the apocalypse. After the apocalypse (this is still assuming it's natural causes) there's going to be a lot of people dead, and most of technology that we were used to is probably washed away, smashed, burnt, or otherwise unusable. Electronics would also be useless, because the power lines would all probably be broken. It would take years, possibly decades for humanity to rebuild, and probably decades more for civilization to be anywhere close to what it was before the apocalypse.

There is still more than a century before this Cycle ends, and when it does Commander Shepard will get together the most badass team in the Galaxy and save us all.

Dunno if it has been said already, but the Mayan calandar does NOT end in 2012.

I REPEAT, THE MAYAN CALENDAR DOES NOT END IN 2012

Some scientist mistranslated a tablet. In reality, the mayan calendar ends in 2232. That still gives you 2 more centuries to do something about it. So anyone who still believes in the 2012 nonsense is officially a massive idiot.

Not that you need me to tell you that...

Just in case you didn't already know, majority of people are really stupid and will believe any shit they hear without ever looking into it themselves.

The way I see it 2012 is an opportunity to make a load of money:

Sell places in underground bunkers for ?100 per person. If they ask to know where they are just tell them the location is kept secret for security purposes but they will be told when disaster is imminent.

Soon enough you will have lined your pockets with the gold of fools and then one of two things can happen:

Scenario 1: The world actually ends for some reason. There are no actual bunkers but that doesn't matter because everyone is going to die anyway.

Scenario 2: The world doesn't end, the bunkers are never needed and thus their existence is never disproved, yow now have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life.

the mayans probably just realized that their calendar was too long and and the world was going to die from war and disease long before 2012 anyway

Congratulations, you're one of the few people alive with 'common sense.' Please bare with those without it while you coast through life and try to ignore them.
I'd have thought common sense would dictate using the search bar to see if this has been done before. ;)
No, I've always been under the impression that common sense would dictate contributing to a thread first and foremost.

People who obsess about 2012 are the ones who will die, in my opinion. How I see it is, if you constantly worry about it and it has that much of an effect on you, it's probably going to happen to you. :p

Ok ok, but being serious, I don't believe in 2012. If anything, mankind might wipe itself out in that time rather then a planned disaster. Whether it be oil leaks, nukes, or global warming.
There goes half of our population! WOOHOO

It's some old bullshit to me. Although in some weird way it's kinda interesting that so many people believe this.

It won't end in 2012 because of something strange and mystical, but it might end because people stop giving a fuck and let the world go to shit.
