Don't you fuckers get it. Achievements are just cheat codes for game developers. With achievements all they have to do is write down some words that make an annoying noise when you do something right, instead of making a minigame to do the exact same thing.

Achievements are a failed attempt by Microsoft to lengthen the game 4 or 5 hours. The only problem is that there's no point. All gamer scores are giant dicks attached to your foreheads that you show off to other dickheads to see who's head dick is bigger.
My, there's a lot of aggression in here today.

Someone open a window, it smells like teenage angst.

If I like the game enough then I will make the effort to try and get every achievement. On most games I rarely get up to half the total GS but I've managed to get full GS on Devil May Cry 4, Symphony of the Night, and Ikaruga(I was real proud of that).

I love the achievement system, it's the reason I buy most of my games on the 360 over my PS3.... [small]Other than the 360's better controller[/small]

Until I realized I could get away with taking my xbox to work, no they weren't worth the effort. Now that I have a ton of time and not enough new game money to fill that time, yes, I love them. Curiously though, I still couldn't give a shit less about trophies still, despite owning all three systems.

Trophies/achievements are one of those things that take advantage of most gamers' desire to get 100%. Only problem is, if you don't have online access with your PS3 or 360 (like me), then you can only get about 2/3rds of the trophies in most games...

And dude...PS3 games HAVE trophies now. Trophies and achievements are now pretty much the same on the multiplatform games.

i realize this, the achievement system is just better though... besides I don't have too many friends with PS3's that I can brag my 15 trophies too.

I realize that, but popular culture doesn't try and shove the idea of obsessively collecting trophies down your throat like Microsoft does Achievements. Trophies feel more like happy accidents. Achievements feel more like awards for awards for doing things that don't matter to get something that doesn't exist and has no real world value. No unlockables, no coupons in the online store, no nothing.

At least with trophies you can look at them in Home like some sort of vaguely impressive sculpture.
Trophies feel more like happy accidents...I don't even understand the logic. Thats what achievements (for the most part) are too. Uncharted had achievements for beating the game on the hardest difficulty/collecting all of the collectibles...Fracture had an achievement for beating it on the hardest difficulty/collecting all of the collectibles(X360). Are those any different from eachother?

Quit flaming other people for having fun, if you don't like them, just say so. You don't have to get on everyone else's case about having fun with them.

I don't do them for the points, I do them for the challenge when applicable.

What a stupid thread, at the end of the day it's down to your own opinion of achievements are worth it, and even then theres going to be some specific ones that you don't think are worth it therefore you won't go for them.
Theres no discussion here.

Yeah they are good, if you don't like them then boo hoo you aren't forced to unlock them.
To those who moan about them: stop whinging and stfu

I think they are.
They make games last and make you do things you wouldn't originally do.
Oh, and I also just love that sound and seeing an achievement pop up. I'm up to 31k gamerscore.

Achievements are a great bonus to a game, but I am definetly not going to play a game for the sole sake of completing them.

Mind while unofficial, achievements have existed as early as saving your game data was possible. Think Sonic the Hedgehog when you can turn Super Sonic meaning you collected all the Chaos emeralds (so useful it's required to finish the game 100%), Final Fantasy VI when you kill Shinryuu and get its item (useless), the Iris Treasures in Lufia II (useful-ish) or even a simple hi-score system.

I guess there are two sides with one being crazy achievement hunters and the other the crazy achievement haters (aha trophy lovers), but then there's the happy medium where...I dunno, it's a nice goal to give you something to do when you're done playing the main meat of the game (and sometimes accidentally unlocking an achievement or two through a regular play through)...but really gaming shouldn't be hard work or stressful, achievements or trophies included...

I'm not overly bothered by them, most games I play and unlock the basic ones, sometimes I go out of my way and get the collectibles or a particular achievement. If its a rediculous one like kill over a stupid ammount or play 2000+ online games on something I dont like I wont bother I have better things to do.

My housemate used to try platinum everything and the stress he used to put himself through was pretty extreme for a trophy.
