This thread doesn't seem to have been made before, so here it is:

If alien life was to make contact with the human race, would they be hostile or friendly?
(I don't mean the illegal kind)
Also, please say why you think they'd be that way (hostile or friendly)

personally, I think that they'd be friendly, because any species that is intelligent enough to travel (more than) a few light years should be intelligent enough to do away with such a petty thing as war.

It's a wild card.

Humans generally hate what we don't understand, and if aliens were to ever arrive, I'd assume they would be met with much hostility.

As such, if they're more intelligent than us - chances are they're also much more advanced. If they choose to react to our hostility in an equally hostile manner, we have war.

Ray Guns > M16's.

Result? We're fucked.

Aliens probably don't give a shit about us. They're all "Uranium bombs? Shit, that's how our toasters work".

Great, I voted no and the poll says 100% of voters chose yes.

Anyway, I think it would be preposterous for any intelligent beings outside our solar system to be hostile towards us. Why would they be?

Having said that, Hazy (above) makes a very good point. We'd probably want to start testing on them as well, even if they were more intelligent than us, so I imagine some disgusting scandals would happen sooner or later. And it could go both ways.

In short - I think that curiosity would override ethics, sadly (on both sides, but particularly ours - it's what humanity are known for, if you believe films like E.T.).

IMMIGRANTS! Driving around, blaring their raps and shooting all the jobs!

OT: I have no idea how they would react to us because I haven't seen one. I think they'd see us as more of a curiosity at first, most likely followed by disgust.

Yeah us as human beings would probably figure to make the first hostile move in trying to be pre-emptive and demonstrate our own strengths in technology.

If aliens do exist, either they're simple microorganisms or they're very far away.

I refer you to a sci-fi series called the Legacy of the Aldenata in which there are several alien races. One of them has all the restraint and pacifism of the Mongol hordes crossed with a locust swarm. The rest of them look to humanity because they did "do away with such a petty thing as war." That doesn't mean they like us, or want us in their galactic buddy club.

On the one hand one could suppose that a civilisation advanced enough to come all the way here will be enlightened enough to have gotten over the whole petty 'killing anything different' idea.

On the other hand, such an advanced civilisation might view us as nothing more than insects not worthy of their regard or even their attention.

Also, an alien psyche might be vastly different from ours, so nothing can be assumed by finding analogues in our culture and on our planet.

Well, I can say for one thing any intelligent race probably got to the apex of their planet's ecosystem the same way humans did, i.e being savage and bloodthirsty.
Plus when humans settled to various areas in a desire to conquer it always meant large numbers of the native people of that region would get killed too.
So if you are asking me if an Alien Race deciding to land on Earth for the sake of ownership might prove hostile I feel it is entirely possible.

However a peaceful race may still exist, a culture that needs not use violence as a solution, one that is merely exploring the universe and may consider humanity a race worth preserving. However I feel that humans are savage and if aliens are in any way like humans they probably would have a fighting instinct as well, may be proud warriors or savage conquerers, either way all planets with an ecosystem would follow a rule of 'survival of the fittest' so even if they don't come to Earth with intent to kill all humans they would certainly have weapons and an army of some variety.
Let's face it, peaceful enlightened civilisations still wouldn't be stupid enough to be trusting of lowly savage humans to the point where they would arrive on Earth and not bring weapons.

By the way, speaking as an alien myself.... humans, your days are numbered!

Other: - I don't know. I couldn't say either way. Although I do find it incredibly silly to assume that there aren't any other lifeforms outside our planet, I also think it is quite dumb to assume those we'd meet would actually have an opinion on our planet, the majority would be small bacterial ones probably.

I always imagened that aliens know we are here and they are watching us. And based on what they have "seen"... they would only be hostile if we tried to venture outside of our solar system because they would not want humans and all there hate and destructive habits to spread.

BUT....

Aliens could be just like us with all of our faults or even look like us and are afraid that were hostile and there peaceful or vis-versa.

(insert X-files theme)

The truth is out there!

AFAIK, there are billions of stars in our own galaxy only, millions of which are of similar age and size as our Sun. Adding to the count the distinct possibility that the red dwarf stars, given their longevity and stability, have a higher chance of sustaining life within the planets that are in the safe zone, I can't see a reason why there couldn't be highly evolved sapient alien races out there. It just contradicts all odds, and if we're to talk about God, I think that an omnipotent and infinite being would easily grow tired of watching out for a SINGLE race.

On the topic at hand, I think it's more likely for us to turn violent and attack first. Should the opposite happen, I don't think we will live long enough to realize what hit us: creatures able to travel thousands of light-years are bound to have weapons that are for nukes what nukes are for slingshots.
