Aliens (if they exist, which I'm sure they do) probably don't know for sure if humans exist. So how can they be hostile? I don't believe that aliens have ever visited earth, so (like us) they probably just speculate on the existence of other civilizations. That's assuming they've advanced enough to speculate at all.

I typically think that aliens are portrayed as hostile in the fiction surrounding them, because it makes for more interesting stories.

I think that aliens, if they were ever able to contact us, wouldn't bother doing so, unless they explored us for long period of time. And even after that i think they would find us unworthy and then just say: "Fuck them, we are going home." So there wouldn't be an encounter or war of any form, just ignorance.

As a race becomes more complex and intelligent they also become more socially complex. Any intelligent race would have emotions similar to our own. Physically they would have a RELATIVELY good chance of resembling us as ours is a versatile form. *This means sexy aliens are still possible*

If there are intelligent aliens then lets assume evolution is the name of the game:

An inhabitable planet would have to be at least slightly similar to our own, meaning the planets dominant species would be at least slightly similar to our own. I think that when humans and aliens first meet and partially bridge the communications gap, everything will be very diplomatic. Then once the two species integrate better their will be peace and wars with alien v alien, human v alien and human v human.

A long lasting war between the two species is unlikely.

That's my 2 Intergalactic credits worth.

I think it's quite ridiculous to assume that once a race becomes technologically advanced enough for deep space travel it'll have become smart enough to abandon resorting to violence. Look at us, evolving for thousands of years and we still fight like animals, if not even worse. I think hostility towards others is just an aspect of life. However, it may be possible that extraterrestrials have already found us (there have been alleged ufo sightings for many hundreds of years) and have just decided to leave us alone. Maybe they're just waiting for us to become worth harvesting (if aliens are capable of traveling anywhere around the universe I doubt they'd find anything special about our planet) or like some of you have already said, waiting for us to smarten up enough to accept alien contact. Maybe we'll find out some day.

Almost like brandon said
if we ever make contact with aliens, even with our "its not like us then kill it" type of personality our initial reactions would probably be fear then we would try to make contact so we don't get killed and after that it could go either way they might interpret our attempts as acts of hostility, go away or peace its anyone's guess

Depends on the kind of alien - maybe they're conquering, maybe exploring, maybe doing something completely incomprehensible, maybe not doing anything at all.

But you know... to have their own interstellar spaceship or even an entire starfleet, aliens would have to be either peaceful or disciplined. "Disciplined" can mean not only "agressive dictatorship", but also "monotonous bureaucrats". So i guess they would probably not be of "DESTROY ALL HUMANS" variety. Or maybe that's just an inaccurate guess, i don't know.

IMMIGRANTS! Driving around, blaring their raps and shooting all the jobs!
They'll take our jobs!

OT:

I suppose communication will be a problem. What looks to us as a brain dissection might be their way of greeting... After a couple of misunderstandings like that we'd probably attack them.
Hilarity will ensue, no wait, I meant "death and destruction".

personally, I think that they'd be friendly, because any species that is intelligent enough to travel (more than) a few light years should be intelligent enough to do away with such a petty thing as war.
Arguably humans are the most intelligent species on Earth, and we're still at each others' throats constantly. Even our pastimes tend to be violent (sports, video games, family dinners).
And many a great technological breakthrough has come from military research, like the Internet and long-range air travel.

Nuh uh! Haven't you seen the Vortigaunts in Half-Life (2)?!

OT: Imo, I don't think intelligent life would differ very much from the life we have here on Earth, considering carbon atoms are vital to life on our planet, why should it be any different anywhere else?

Well, I'm playing Mothership Zeta, and they all seem to want to kill me.

Actual answer: The aliens that human beings will in all likelihood never EVER see? Probably not hostile towards humans.

Who's to say that hostility is even a part of their reasoning. Aliens could very well have completely different concepts of logic, reasoning, etc. I don't think an actual completely alien presence can be reduced to a binary hostile or peaceful.

I kinda did this topic a few days ago, called something like "why are aliens evil?"
OT: they'd probably be all like "lolwut we're waaaaaay better than you hahahahahhhaa."(or something of that nature) and make fun of us, but i don't think they would be hostile

I'm not even sure they would feel similar emotions as Earth creatures do, think in a way that's comparable of how we think. We might not even be able to grasp it.

Hence, a simple hostile/friendly may not be applicable.

I will take the "Avatar" approach:
I believe that we will get more advanced and invade some planets ourselves before Earth gets invaded.

well, looking at history, when advanced cultures come in contact with primitive cultures, the primitive culture gets either completely wiped out, or assimilated into the advanced one after a brief tussle, so the best we can hope for is that the aliens dont feel like using us for target practice.
