Some are both. Some are one, but not the other. And then some are none.

Well, I think its art because it is a medium that is making us feel something just like a great painting or a music piece.

Both, but I think videogames have a lot more pressure to be entertainment than art, more so than other mediums. I can't really think of any acclaimed games not considered entertainment is what I mean.

Depends on the game really.

If it aims to give you a good time, I'd call it (an attempt at) entertainment, and if it aims to provoke deeper feelings, reflections, and musings I'd call it (an attempt at) art.

They aren't really mutually exclusive, but you'll find a lot more of the former, and the latter is considerably harder to pull off.

They're both. Just as books, comics and films can be art and entertainment, so too can videogames. Not all of them are, but then the same goes for any kind of creative endeavour.

They're purely entertainment from my point of view. I don't get why people gotta label it as art just to defend that they still play games.

... and let the flame wars begin.
I second this.

If we want to go around and call everything art, then what's the point?
Gorgeous, beautiful, simply the mostest stunningly structured post ever; you simply must post me.

Stop asking this stupid question. It depends on what video game you're talking about. Some games are pieces of art, some are made purely to entertainment, some are both and the rest are neither.

I've played some games that were merely done to make an artistic statement and did not entertain for crap. I've played some that had no artistic quality and their memories are dim, the entertainment value is derived from a 14 year olds idea of being entertained.

When you make a beautifully done artistic game with interactive story-telling, functional gameplay mechanics, and a tale worth telling, nay experiencing games finally serve their original purpose of being both Entertainment AND Art.

It seems to me that it can be both. I mean, a film like The Dark Knight or The Shining is both entertaining and artful right? A book like House of Leaves or Call of Cthulhu is both entertaining and artful as well, right? Songs like Bohemian Rhapsody and Solsbury Hill are also entertaining and artful, right? Why cannot games be the same way?

Tell you what, you can even wipe your arse on a piece of toilet paper and call it art, let alone a video game.

Art itself is very subjective, so it is really just a bunch of individualized opinions on what they imagine art to be.

One man's Picasso, is another man's toddler scribble.

If you're asking if games are art or entertainment, then my answer would be... yes; plenty are.

Lots of games can be viewed as artistic masterpieces although the primary and ultimate purpose of a video game is to entertain.

I don't think they are art. Or at least not yet anyway. I can see the potential, it's just we are not there yet. Also ask our selves this: do we want games to be art?

I do get the hypocrisy of what I'm saying. There are plenty of things I would love to ban. But when you open that gate, even a little. Who can you trust to close it again?
So you don't mind someone deciding on laws but you do mind someone deciding what should be censored? Arent laws just behavioural censors? Im not promoting murder or anything else morally wrong. Getting off topic but I believe people wouldn't go round murdering if it was made legal, just like people still take drugs despite the law. Laws punish certain behaviour, and no-one should have the right to determine what behaviour is deemed acceptable, just as you, and many others, believe that no-one should have the authority to censor media.

Oh god, another one... I'm going to need to invest in a big mallet soon, these Art topics seem like a never ending Whac-a-mole...

Games don't need to have an answer to whether they're art or not, this won't change absolutely anything about them. Would you really want your favourite game being considered on par with Yoko Ono screaming in the middle of a gallery or any of this stupid "post modern" art shit?

Everybody will have a different idea of what they look for in art which is why it's never been defined. Games are above this sort of trivial crap to me.

By post me, you mean quote me, right?

Okay, I did. Now what?
I think they were being sarcstic.

The point of this discussion is to clarify whether games, like art, should be protected from being bought, changed and remarketed. Imagine if chess was bought, remodeled on snakes and ladders, then sold back to the public as chess. I don't think chess has never been considered art (although playing it has been) but you can see what i'm getting at.

I get what you are saying. I guess all I can tell you is 'Keep fighting the good fight'?

How do you feel about rape simulators? Or a mini game leading Jewish people into ovens?

I say ban that shit, but we all are entitled to our opinions.
You'd sacrifice essential human rights just so you don't have to see offensive stuff?
