Poll: Are games as "fun" as they used to be?

I've been gaming since... well since I can remember and I have an incredible passion for games. Grew up playing the good ol' NES up to about N64. Those years had to have been my highlight in my gaming career.

Recently I have had a hard time finding a game that really keeps my attention. If I ever do find a game that really grabs me in, its either really short or gets old incredibly fast. This has been extremely disappointing to me because I used to love every aspect of gaming and every type of game. Puzzles, Shooter, Platforming; it didn't matter what type, they were just fun.

Maybe it is because I'm older and need more complex things to entertain my mind. But I'm wondering if anyone else is feeling this. I think gaming may have lost its creative spark in the last couple years. Now don't get me wrong, there are still games that I love and my 360 is keeping me busy, but I can only game for about 1-3 hours without getting suddenly bored.

I miss the likes of Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Games have certainly lost their single player longetivity/replay value.

But we have the internet now.

Yes they are still just as fun.

The only reason an old game seems more fun is because of nostalgia. That's not to say old gamer aren't fun, it's just stupid to think that they are instantly better than all modern games.

Oh by no means are they instantly better than modern games. I suppose it is a lot of nostalgia in play here...

I mean, I think games like Banjo Kazooie back in the day were fantastic, but I almost like the new BK better. Its almost completely unrelated to the old ones, but still manages to deliver a well thought out and creative game. Halo 2 is probably the best shooter I have every played, better than doom obviously even with the insane amounts of time I spent with doom.
From a technical stance, modern games are in every war better than old games. I think the problem is, there aren't any new concepts being introduced (and the ones that are being introduced seem pretty good) I'm thinkin we need a whole new genre of gaming to revolutionize the market.

Now, as back then, it depends on what games you talk about. I'd say they're as fun as they ever were...and occasionally more so.

Not sure what your talking about. Games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are still here.
They just keep the formation of the game and either add stuff or remove stuff.

Depends on the game. Some games that used to keep my interested I don't even bat an eye at now.
And some games I use to hate I know enjoy. Overall, I will say it's starting to take more to keep me glued to the controller then it used to. But I still enjoy myself when I find a good game.

Well every game is fun if you play it the fun way. Even GTA IV you can have so mch fun, but some suckers just blame it for making kids to do stupid thigs, it's because kids who do stupid things are stupid themselves.

Overall I find new games to be more fun then older games. I take that back, it's not that I find them more fun, but rather a less chance of getting a game so bad that it's painful to play.

The signle to noise of good to really bad games have gotten much much better sense the atari days. on the 2600 finding a good game among the sea of unplayable garbage was a task in itself. The NES was a bit better, but still a mess. Even with the good games they had all sorts of playability issues. We didn't have the internet to get reviews from, all we had was word of mouth and mags like nintendo power that would never say anything negative do to fear of advertisers pulling money

Today even the bad games like 'two worlds' can still be fun, not as much as a triple A tittle but no ware near as bad as the bad games from the nes

Yes, every game is fun unless you are a yahtzee-like idiot (not saying the man is an idiot, his standards are just way too high and he bullshits about some stuff).

Well if a game has lost my attention I usually mute the game, keep the subtitles off, and make up my own story and dialoge. Its just a think I do

I look back at the days when all I had to play on my genesis were platformers, brawlers and two decent RPGs, and I can't help but be amazed at how much better gaming is since the Sega Genesis days. I haven't seen any drop off since the N64 and PSX either.

Of course games are still fun, or all of us would stop playing them. Our current generation of games are "hits" and "misses" but there were a lot back in the day too.

Just when I think I'm getting tired of this hobby either something new comes out and absorbs a hundred hours or more of my time (Empire: Total War) or I re-discover a lost classic in my collection and play it to death all over again (NHL 2K5) or I get an old game that I somehow managed to miss the first time around (GTA Vice City and San Andreas). All examples in previous sentence are from 2009 (yes, I actually managed to miss VC and SA, but seeing the Trilogy for $30 at Best Buy solved that problem and gave me my own copy of GTA3 to boot.)
