I find it stupid to try to save yourself for marriage.

*waits for people to start disagreeing*

Ok, my position.

For the female: Do you really want to experience the pain of first time sex on such a highly anticipated night? Not to mention the nerves that go with it as well as having your new husband, rather than fully give in to you, be worried the whole time since he's causing you discomfort?

For males: Do you really want to save yourself and give her all 14 seconds of bliss on her wedding night? Not to mention all the nerves that go with it, being insecure completely and requiring her to, rather than enjoy the experience, coax you into feeling comfortable with it.

Most of this post reminds me of "On Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan.

But, back on topic no, I don't simply because I haven't been in the past so I really couldn't.
I have no problem with people who want to though it's just personal choice at the end of the day.

Abstinence is stupid. Marriage is just a ridiculous idea that society and religion have put into our heads as the ultimate form of love, but really, its just to control what you do, and its really just a money thing. I actually know 3 couples who just got married because of money and that they wanted to be insured. I don't think that love has anything to do with law or the government. Why is it supposed to be this huge deal when, after the actual wedding, everything's exactly the same as before, or sometimes, worse.

Why are we supposed to wait to get married until we have sex? Once again, control.

And yes if you must know, that ship has sailed and I did it with a girl I love dearly.

I was untill I decided that I won't ever get married. Because of that decision I became a much happier person.

Sex, I can understand and respect the choice if you make it for whatever reasons. What creeped me out was seeing a preview for that 18 and Counting show on TLC.They didn't even kiss until their wedding.I'm sorry but that's getting a little extreme and starting to stray into the strapping explosives to yourself fanaticism.

There was a topic like this at another forum and it gave some worthwhile discussion, so I decided to being it to the good ol' Escapist. So what do my fellow escapists plan for this little escapade of sex and marriage?

Personally, I don't plan on having sex before marriage, but I don't plan on not having sex either, what happens happens.

I think you should just do what you feel is right.

Everyone leads a different life and what you're comfortable with may be different from what other people are comfortable with.

There are also issues of trust, vulnerability, fear and many other factors that go into the choice of whether or not to have sex and you should accept those things about yourself. Sex puts you in a vulnerable place--and you have to analyze whether or not you're ready for that and whether or not your potential partner is mature enough to handle it.

Do yourself a favor though, be responsible. Teenage years are awkward and terrible--wait until they're mostly over. In my experience, you change a lot by the time you turn 18 and even more by your twenties.

As you so eloquently put it, that ship sailed a long time ago.

I like talking to girls, and getting their perspectives on things like this, and the funny thing about the subject of a dude's virginity, is it seems pretty split down the middle when it comes to a guy in his late teens and early 20's having not had sex yet.

About half of the girls find it endearing, and romantic. "Oh, how sweet. He's saved it for true love..."

The other half think it's completely creepy. "Why would he do that? It's weird, and who wants to bust a guy's cherry, with a guaranteed short ride?"

Ahhhh, girls are fun.

Most girls I knew but in the teen years of my life enjoy the thrill of taking a guys "V"
And I don't mean stealing his limited edition V for Vendetta figurine.

In fact, when I lost it the girl I met at "that" party proclaimed that "it was hers to take" to all the girls at the party since she saw me first.

There is absolutely no point in saving yourself for marriage.

Let's look at what marriage is:
The ceremony of marriage is a way of telling your friends and family you love each other to that extent.
The legality of marriage is a way of telling the government that you love each other that much.

On other hand, God wouldn't need to be told that you love each other that much, as he would already know.
Equally, you and your partner should also already know how much you love each other too.

So, once you've found the person you love that much, why would you wait until you were married?
For your friends and family? For the government?
Are they going to be watching or something?

Yeah, I vaguely remember a few house parties that featured similar girls, oh, so many years ago...well not that long ago. It's true, girls 15-17 seem to be less hung up on the issue.

Yeah, and lets face it, the "institution" of marriage isn't exactly what it used to be. Roughly 50% of all marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. Marital infidelity statistics are alarmingly high, especially in comparison to say 30 years ago.

Honestly, if marriage is the finish line to that particular race for some people, then they really need to re-think some boundaries.

Actually i'm talking about the 17-20 age range, I consider a 20 year old to be a teen.

Damn straight they're not getting at my V statuette! That thing cost me $50!

Anyhow, I plan on abstaining from sex until marriage. It's a personal choice, and I would expect my partner to understand.

That bridge was crossed years ago.

One of my friends who i thought was a man whore is actually a virgin and doesn't believe in sex before marriage.
Even though he told me different...
