I've never had a problem with spoilers, in fact I usually read the TVTropes article on games, anime, and movies before I go to the item itself.
Yeah, me too. I can't really fathom why people get so vitriolic about them sometimes, so I can forget to be careful, but I do my best to respect how people might feel.

I don't like spoilers. If you know soemthing's going to happen it may effect how you would've seen it otherwise. Emotionally, and your overall opinion of the media being spoiled.

Someone told me the ending to Shutter Island before I'd seen the film. I just couldn't enjoy the film as I kept thinking about the ending, and whether or not the person who had told me was lying.
ugh. I guessed the ending to that film about a minute in. The rest just seemed so boring as I was just waiting for them to do the big reveal - everything else just felt like padding.
Yeah, the ending was pretty obvious, but I still would have preferred not to know beforehand.
Was it? Maybe I'm giving it too much credit, but I still think it's worth considering that the film itself is lying to you, or something to that effect.

Going into a story blind gives you a certain perception that the artists behind the work expected you to have. It puts you in a position of shock, wonder, fear, sadness, or any number of things that you wouldn't have experienced quite the same way if you had already known. Sure, going through something you've had spoiled for you a second time when you already know is still good, but you always remember how you reacted to that first time.

This thread has convinced me the internet and wikipedia need to be censored of all story content. I don't give a damn about wikipedia's belief that "it won't be a complete reference" article. The story synopsis has no reason to be there.
I think it does. It helps a lot for research purposes. If you want to enjoy a movie or game story don't go to places that are highly likely to ruin it like Wikipedia.

Personally, I hate spoilers. They makers of the media put the twist there to enhance the enjoyment of the viewer and having that twist known beforehand diminishes the experience in my opinion.

Also, why the fuck does this site need Capcha? I have not seen one spam post here. Ever and I've been here regularly over a year.

I will never be able to watch sixth sense now, because I will be aware throughout the film what's going on.

I watched the others, however, and thought the twist was amazing, even though the film was average.

I despise spoilers. I love being able to actually feel like I'm in the game, and I can't do that as easily if I know every little detail about the story. With some games it's a little different, after I've already beaten it.

I've avoided spoilers for the Mass Effect series since it came out (was really hard on this forum with all you damn ME fans) but since I just got ME2 on the PS3 yesterday, it was definitely worth it.

Yes, they are. They can kill atmosphere, tension and any form of immersion.

For an example of how they can affect a play-through take this as an example:

You get told that either Ashley or Kaiden has to die on Virmire. You get the game and choose to play as a Male Shepard. You find out that Ashley and Liara are the two possible love interests. You now know that Ashley can die, so this means that you will either choose Liara to be safe, or choose Ashley and sacrifice Kaiden so you can have the love interest.

There is now no suspense or shock when it comes to Virmire as you know what happens. As such you instead make a calculated decision based upon this knowledge to help you rather than making what would otherwise be an intense decision in the heat of the moment of the game.

I only think they're bad if the subject in question is either a mystery based game/movie/book/etc. or if there's a twist at the end of it. Like a BIG Fight Club style twist central to the plot. Other than that, I don't really care.

What's your personal opinion on how bad a spoiler truly is?
Spoilers are terrible.

I once got a promising up-and-coming group dumped off a record label because one of the members spoiled a key surprise scene in a Tarantino film for me during a casual conversation. They were doing quite well until that point too, so let that be a lesson... if you want to achieve your goals in life, don't be a spoiler-spewing douche, because one day somebody will make you pay.

I won't let people talk about films I haven't seen in my presence. At all. As soon as it starts happening I either leave the room, block my ears, yell over the top of them or forcibly obstruct their mouth with an object to prevent their speech. I also haven't read any of the other posts in this thread, nor will I be reading any of the replies to this post, if there are any, because they might also contain spoilers.

Half the time its pretty damn obvious what's going to happen anyway (i think the most suprising plot twist will be when the friend who twirls his moustache and cackles doesn't betray you).

That said I couldn't watch the sixth sense because my stupid ex told me the twist in the first 5 minutes. Fable 3 would have also been completely ruined for me, i had no idea what was going to happen when you became king.

I usually so far behind in getting popular games that everybody has already done away with spoiler tags and they're just posting things willy-nilly. I'm not that bothered though.

Depends. I think its a matter of will powers if you want to know it already or not. This is also apply if someone told you the spoiler that is if they sprang it on you eventhough you didn't wanted to know it.

They're unconscionable, when you watch a movie or play a game or read a book for the first time every new moment is a new experience that you get to experience along with the characters. If you know what's going to happen it can render every moment up to that point, at best, a bit predictable and at worst utterly destroys the narrative. Not to mention that if something is spoiled you are robbed of that experience forever and can never be allowed witness it for yourself.

Yep. Things I've had spoiled are: KOTOR, KOTOR 2, Jade Empire, Baldur's Gate, COD4, Red Dead Redemption, Dexter Season 4, the monster from Amnesia, Fallout, some parts of Fallout NV, Oblivion Shivering Isles, near end game Mass Effect 2 (not a massive spoiler, but still) and probably various other things.

I really hate spoilers.
My friend ruined Shutter Island for me the other day.
Fuck, I was really looking forward to that.
I'm pretty sure Fight Club's been ruined too.

I'm glad The Usual Suspects or Bioshock weren't ruined for me though.

If someone went back in time and spoiled Clannad for me, I might just have killed them.

I dont mind being spoiled ahead of time, I do it to myself all the time by reading up on something beforehand.

But I dont like being spoiled during the actual event when I have invested my time into seeing how things are going to turn out. And when something is spoiled I just have to tell myself "its the journey thats important, not the destination."

Accidents happen and people should have to read the books, play the games, etc...to see what happens. The problem is that they are contained in these websites that care more about their crediblity as a "resource" than as a damned website. There is no reason to put them there other than "just because" they want to. The problem that comes with this is that people will argue the need for censorship for the sake of a viewer, when in fact the viewer shouldn't have to worry if he accidentally comes across numerous articles and the such.

Bottom line... certain websites, like the ultimate criminal Wikipedia, should edit their content only for the sole necessity of the article. There is no valuable knowledge, need, or reason to post the entire synopsis to something for the sake of "just putting it there". Their credibility as a "reference guide" doesn't matter either. What a horrible thing to pride yourself after.

If these websites aren't used as resources then what is the point of having them? When sites like Wikipedia stop acting like resources and start acting like trailers then they become redundant.
