Poll: Are we mean to newcomers?

When I made my first thread people weren't mean but they did give many replies about the search bar and spell check (I accidently titled it as a "fist" thread). They did fire a series of welcome though. So are we too mean? Not really, no. We welcome people but are mean to those who disobey the rules. We're allowed to be mean to be to them.

I have, unfortunately, become a little cold hearted towards newer members and members with lower post counts. I told myself in the beginning I wouldn't but the more time I spend on here the more things I see that grind my gears. For example, the poll above has unnecessary descriptions in the options. A simple "Yes", "No", "No Opinion" would have sufficed.

I've encountered a few Dicks Less than pleasureable people here, but it's the internet, and part of the experience.
And they probably deserve it if they evoke our wrath.

i'm technically still a newcomer, but when i was well and truly fresh, no one was mean to me.

at least, unless i deserved it. there were a few cases where i did. but other than that, everyone's been quite kind to me. i guess that means i'm just not a twat type of n00b. yay!

I can say that I never received that treatment, but I have seen it done to other newbies. Yes they should read the forum guidelines but they might not be familiar with the site. So i think those that have been here for a bit should be a bit more understanding, always keep in mind what it was like when you first came to this site.

When I first joined, because I was posting in some political thread, I was accused of being a second account for someone. Aside from that, I haven't encountered any overly mean people here, at least not anyone who has posted overly mean things directed to me. Then again, I haven't created any topics yet. I like to get the lay of the land before I do that. There are many newcomers whose first post is from the thread they have created.

While I admit some newbs are just plain idiots, we have to be more open. I mean the Escapist has higher standards compared to most forums, and so we have to ease people in better. And with the community being as oppressive as it is no wonder we all have a reputation as a bunch of grammar nazis with ego problems.

It is a necessary evil to keep out the youtube crowd. Though this site is slipping, I have noticed an upwards trend of not capitalising sentences.

I'd say no, when i first came here i felt perfectly welcome. But to be honest there's so many of you and you all are so different (sort of) that i can never get any real impression of the community here except an overall good.

Some new comers really need to read the posting rules before unleashing their half assed threads. That said im usually rather nice or just completely ignore the worst of those threads. Yes some people get annoyed by new comers i dont think we abuse them though, either way you have to be initiated in any new community theres nothing wrong with a little fun here and there.

I agree I'm for more abuse of Newbies. Like locking them in closets full of snakes, electro-shock therapy, waterboarding, clamps in on the genitals, etc. In fact I'm all for torture...wait what was this poll about again? Oh right newbies how I loathe them. Uncouth barbarians I say. We need an Escapist Protection League to keep these ruffians at bay and build a giant wall made of chocolate cake.
