Have you seen someone ask "how can you like Portal for dark humor and good puzzles yet love a stupid cube"?
No but I've seen (Fallacious though) arguments that the fandom is fucking stupid because there's perhaps a decent game but they're obsessing over a minor joke within it. Not so much the game is stupid, but people may not take it seriously.

Would you be interested in portal if all you heard of it was:

LOL CAKE IS LIE
CUBE IS MY FRIEND
CAKE IS SPY

Or even have any respect for it? If you saw those hundreds of times?

To me, derpy's getting like that.
Agreed.

Fandom does that, and when it does, it creates a ton of hype aversion. I have to admit I would never have thought My Little Pony would wind up being a huge break out hit with twenty something males. Me? Can't stomach the show. That's my opinion. But more than that, can't stomach someone mocking others just for liking something.

However, fans, please realize spouting memes about what you like is seriously not fun for others.

As far as manliness and cartoons, I'll offer a short story. I was a combat medic. One of my fellow medics was calmly playing the latest Pokemon on his GBA in theater. We were within walking distance of Pakistan and were resting between missions.

One of the SFers walked in to speak with the doctor and get some supplies. On his way out, he saw the game. "Oh, dude! Can I borrow that from you?"

Go ahead. Tell an SF Operator he's not manly for liking Pikachu.

Two words:

Fan Fiction

People have written stories about Derpy and the fandom has basically developed a few popular personality types for her. Some people like to take fanon seriously thus making Derpy the favorite pony of some people, hell, it's pretty much the same for all of the background ponies.(Derpy, Lyra & BonBon, Doctor Whooves, Colgate, Pokey Pierce, Luna, Carrot Top Etc.)

Derpy is not just a LOLMEME, she's also a very fleshed out and interesting pony to some.

I've seen the first 4 episodes so far. It's definitely entertaining, especially compared to most children's cartoons, but I think I'm far from considering myself a "Brony".

Though I wouldn't count myself out just yet. I've been known to get really, really obsessive about stuff in the past.

But that's not really the character, This is like saying Freeman's the best character in HL2 because some people wrote stories where he is a good character. He's a non-character, a shell. Derpy can be a good fanon character but favourite ponies should take into account only "Word of God" canonicity.

And are you god who says that someone can't have a favorite pony because of a fanfiction they liked?

Here are some examples of the most popular of the Derpy Fanon:

Derpy is a derp eyed pony.
It is generally agreed Derpy likes muffins.
It is also generally agreed that Derpy is a mail carrier.
It is ALSO generally agreed that Derpy has a daughter named Dinky.
A lot of bronies like the direction that the fanfiction "Bubbles" took on how derpy got her cutie mark.

There are 3 main popular personality types for Derpy:
A regular, but derp-eyed pony.
A regular pony on the inside, but derp-eyed and speaks almost complete nonsense.
A mentally disabled derp-eyed pony.

Not to mention all the fanfiction based around Derpy and Dinky's relations...

It is also pretty much the same situation with Luna. There Fanon causes some people to have her as their favorite pony and I don't see why they can't.

Just because Derpy is a meme does NOT invalidate her character.

Why? If the fanon around Derpy appeals to me, why can't I like her?

You like the fanon.

Though not really explicit it's implied when someone says "Favourite pony" they're probably talking about in the TV show. The built-up derpy is not a character in the show.

He's not saying it's wrong to like a pony because of fanon. He's saying that if you tell someone from outside of the fandom that you like a character like Derpy they will not understand your reasoning and assume you like her because she has Derp'd eyes.
Yeah that too.

i did as instructed and can safely say its REALLY not for me, as a mater of fact i cant see how its for anyone over the age of 12, but whatever.
Wow, now this is a late response.

If it's not for you then it's not for you. Everyone has their own tastes and no one is going to force you to like the show. Regardless the fandom is here and it's big. I'm sorry to tell you that it's not going anywhere any time soon; especially with season two on the way.

Though since April the forum spam (which was reviled by both fans and non-fans) is all but gone as people have realized that thread after thread of asking "why ponies" without using the search function is only going to net them the same answers as every other thread. We like the show, and if you don't then it's just a difference of opinions and tastes.

What's wrong with that? It can be explained easily, hell even the runner of Equestria Daily's favorite pony is Trixie.

So just ask favorite MANE (yes with the pun) pony.

This is about as unsavory as Tali fandom or people that speak not a lick of Japanese but "KAWAII♥" in their comments.

No, actually it's more unsavory. No part of the aforementioned have actually physically revolted me, but something about Bronies makes me feel freaked out. I see a pony avatar and I feel almost exactly as sick as I do when I hear a grown man admit to finding little children sexually appealing. It's worse than furries, because at least bestiality has an unambiguous sexual deviance to it. The comparison between Bronies and Furries would be, again, akin to pedophiles; like the pedophiles that either freely admit they're into kids or the ones that simply go to the beach or park or whatever and leer at kids but deny the attraction. I know Bronies aren't furries, and I get that it's not all a sex thing, but the fandom glistens with the same abhorrent filmy coating that furries have on them. There is a palpable sleaziness to it, and I know I'm not alone in perceiving this sleazy coating they bear.

No offense intended, but the whole thing is just utterly repelling in every possible way. Try as I have to be objective or tolerant or even dismissive, I just find it impossible not to be really revolted by it.

Nope. I've seen several episodes including the one that supposedly gets everyone sucked in (I don't even remember which one it was) and can honestly say, nope. It is not worth my time.

Sure it can, but annoyed skeptics are not known for their reasonableness.

I don't see it that way. There's such a large amount of fanon so well known throughout the entire fandom that unless it were specifically stated that only the actual show counted I'd see nothing odd about including Derpy in such a poll. It really is a major part of the (for lack of a better word) culture.

Someone outside the fandom would be likely to conclude that I like the show because I'm a gay pedophile (which, for clarification, I am not). I don't see why their opinion should bother me.

I like trixie in canon though.

The point I drove at was that yesterday, I was playing TF2, and someone said on the chat thingy they didn't get portal, why did people love the cube? A couple replied "They're retarded"(People like those I predicted for derpy, ones that were just outside the joke and assumed from it) and I said they don't really, it's just a joke.

Portal was released in 2007? It's been this long and some still don't get it.

It shouldn't bother you. This isn't about it bothering you, it's about people not giving it a chance because they think you are a moron for liking Derpy. I'm not saying whether that's right or wrong, but that's essentially what he is arguing.
