Someone give me the short version, I've heard bad things but still don't fully understand why W8 is being crucified.

I went into novatech the other day they had a demo unit set-up.

I was not happy, yes I could not do much with it as it was it did not have internet or any other real programs as it was a display unit.

From what I saw I do not think I will be giving this one a go. I do not think I can make up my mind until I have seen the final product, maybe once a patch has come out to fix most of the bigger problems.
This was generally the same thoughts I had with vista and I only got 7 when it was on sale.

Win 95 (shit) > Win 98 (good) > Win ME (shit) > Win XP (good) > Win Vista (shit) > Win 7 (good) > Win 8 (see the pattern here?)

Not touching it with a ten foot pole. Sadly it looks like the one recent version of Windows to improve the networking options, but everything else is worthless and will just be annoying. That and the fact that some of the software I run's creators are thinking of not supporting 8 at all as they don't see it being worth the effort.

Of all the things to call Apple out on, this isn't it. Sleek interfaces and OSs that are actual improvements to the previous version on launch are some of the few things that Apple does quite fantastically.

8 isn't Macification. 8 is trying to turn a PC into a stationary mobile device from what I've seen of it. Haven't demoed it personally.

Simply put, it turns your Desktop into a touch screen mobile phone interface.

That is the short of it, not counting how unintuitive it is to use without a touch screen if you're used to the normal Desktop way of doing things.

(minus WMC but there are alternatives)
You can install WMC through add features in the release preview. Apparently it was going to be a paid addon for the full version but it looks like it's still gonna be a free download (with the $40 upgrade from xp/vista/7 to 8 pro, anyway).

The way I see it, they developed vista at the same time as the 360, and the first couple sets of 360s were almost as bad as vista, now they're making windows 8 at the same time as the 720, i think a pattern will show up.....

I had heard that it would be in Pro but not Home. If I can get WMC in Widows8 Home I'll have no hesitation using it for my living room PC. Still not sure if I'll be able to get it with the upgrade from the Peview though. I want hold onto my 32 bit XP license for a little longer.

Yeh I don't think it's free with home, but the $40 upgrade is for pro and you can upgrade from the preview as long as you have a cd key for a previous version, though apparently you lose all of your system files and settings in the upgrade unfortunately. Not sure if you lose the use of the old key though, you might want to see if you have any spares laying around.

Yup. It's only 40 bucks, and I'm still on XP. I'm running 8 on my laptop and like it quite fine, thank you. It amazingly didn't annoy the fuck out of me like 7 did. All those extra shortcuts to useful things like Administrative Tools and such really cut down on the clicks needed to get to the settings.

So yeah. Upgrading.

No because it just looks like its made for tablets/phones and I don't want that for a desktop PC.

PC =/= Tablet. Windows 8 wants to treat the PC like a Tablet and that does nothing but complicate both the user's interface or doing one thing to another.

Windows 7, in my opinion, is the perfect way to build a OS, now all they need to do is do the same exact thing for Windows 8 and I will love microsoft again.
